A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Former-Member, hearing you in all you say and good to see that you are able to get some of it out here. I think it's great that you are able to be so caring of others when in a hard place yourself. Just wanting to make sure you are caring for you too. I certainly have had the feeling many a time that I want to run away from my life. In fact I've kind of done that on some occasions, thereby changing life directions, not always in good ways. I think especially when things are extremely stressful, it is not surprising that this strong impulse arises. @eth's suggestion of taking some time out somewhere while guests are there seems a good one, but I know this may or may not be possible, depending on circumstances. How frustrating to have to put on a kind of act of being all fine and okay, when not feeling that way at all. Again, I can relate, as I do it too in different contexts, as a matter of course. I'm sorry that I don't know any of the details about your son being missing. That must be so awful for you. Gentle hugs to you.

@Shaz51, no plans for me here today, rest and recovery day from a big week and a huge day yesterday. I'm just hoping to take some photos of my now-completed jumper that I knitted for C, to post in @CheerBear's craft thread. It will be a bit of a job because I want to use my old camera for better quality images and I have no idea how this much more recent computer is going to respond to trying to transfer them over so I can post them online. That's it for me, aside from resting and staying out of the heat.

@eth, I loved our chats yesterday too. And love the image of you having a party in your cabin with the dog. I don't know if the dream I had last night strictly qualifies as 'lucid'. I didn't have control over what was happening. But it did leave me feeling like I had emotional-intuitive insights into a number of things. The energy I felt on waking was a kind of uplift of spirit, more than physical. I am still sitting here at the computer, after all, hehe. But yes, I do hope the good spirit feelings stays with me today.

waiting game

may eventuate where I graciously excuse myself and drive off..

@Mazarita...I have many weird dreams partly side effect of sleeping tablet but also the way my mind is ...have always been prone to nightmares way before medication...some dreams are so weird...some I am have awake...half asleep and struggle on waking to know which part is the reality briefly...

@Shaz51

that is a great cause...hoping that they raise enough to help the young man....

we were involved in something like that a few years ago now where wife had to have treatment interstate..husband needed to be by her side..so needed to raise funds for flights and accommodation..two sons also who both have the same heart condition that their mum passed with..

I had furniture that I could have sold in a garage sale but let them come and choose what they wanted as they ran it like an auction....felt good to be able to offer something..they raised a lot of money and were able to fulfil their wishes...

perhaps @Shaz51 mr shaz will be refreshed and enjoy the later event....

@Former-Member

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

Fabulous to hear about your epic dream 🙂 For such a long time in my life I didn't realize that people had good dreams, I thought they were the subconscious going through all your personal worries & fears - I thought bad dreams were normal! I've never had a dream that has had me feeling happy on waking, mine are more like horror movies & would leave me exhausted & upset. I'm very glad I stopped remembering them 😉 in fact I think it might have been a pivot point in my abiliy in managing myself!?!

Heatwave starts here today to, & I've been able to feel it since I first woke. There's a near absolute void of breeze or movement in the leaves. I might have to go to the local servo & fill the jerry can & maybe grab some ice for the evaporative air-cooler. The temp predictions out here are 40+ for the week at least BLAH!!!! I don't just hope it'll pass soon, I think I'll have to get naked & dance around my favourite tree in the backyard! Just so that I can think I'm actually physically doing something about it!:D! On a more serious note though, I do think impending heat waves of 40+ actually do give me a little anxiety . . . I'm really not looking forward to this week.

But other than a few weatherly worries I'm doing pretty good 🙂 My main plan for the day is to start the obsessive cooling routine that I will focus on for the rest of the week 😉

Glad to hear {if I'm remembering what I've read correctly} that your planning a rest day today 🙂 You have absolutely earnt it 😄 Did you end up getting to the craft shop yesterday?

Love & real relaxation to you Mazy
