A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning my beautiful Mazy @Mazarita and everyone

Doesn't the body suck sometimes! Particularly this attacking itself business!! As if you don't have enough trouble with everything else attacking you!!! I'm so sorry the Doctor was rude and so uncaring; since when did Doctors stop caring? - isn't that what they're in the business for?!?

This disease really has put you through it! I didn't really notice my Psoriasis being a problem until about 10 years ago, though I had noticed neck and joint problems 10 years before that, but at that stage I didn't even know that what was on my skin could be on the inside!

My Mother went through bowel surgery to remove cancer, a Doctor explained that it was one of the most painful surgeries because it went through the lower abdominal muscles and those muscles where used in just about every movement. That you've been through that 3 times is frightening, I really feel for you

Mine is an immunity malfunction too, it affects the large intestine as well I think - that's why I have such a touchy gut, that can expand my entire abdomen with gas, I honestly bloat up like a balloon; & cause muscle contractions that I liken to child-birth - & they hurt like child-birth too, only no bundle of joy at the end. Though not diarrhea, I would be very constipated a lot; I don't think constipation is as bad, having suffered bouts of diarrhea throughout my lifetime - but it's still a constant source of pain and discomfort. My child is diagnosed with Celiac disease and Irritable bowel syndrome.

I guess what I'm trying to explain is that I have a little idea and I think what your going through is cruel & that makes your beautiful soul even more amazing!

Oh, I haveback passage problems too, Rectocele, which is where the {quoting google here} posterior vaginal wall prolapse occurs when the thin wall of tissue that separates the rectum from the vagina weakens. I have to manually manipulate things to move my bowel {Sorry if that's too much information!} It's actually not as socially disabling as the incontinence of urine, which can, at times, be very unpredictable!

Don't give up Mazy, that Doctor doesn't live in your body & possibly doesn't even have the years of experience you have with Chrohns disease! Like all Doctors . . . people for that matter, it would be better if you could have a better fit for you though. Is there anyway to see a different Doctor? Can you ask about that when you see your GP?

I'm sending images of Currawongs carrying fluffy balls of Dandelion flowers, one of them landing on your shoulder and leaning the wish ball across, so you can make your wish and blow it out into the Universe

I will be wishing on each white fluffy Dandelion pod, that you get a good Doctor who's not only sympathetic but empathizes, understands and heals you

Love to you Mazy

Hi @Mazarita and all. Just catching up on recent posts again. Hope today is going well so far for all and that good rest was had last night.

Hi @Former-Member PHaMs stands for Personal Helpers and Mentors Service. I got mine through New Horizons. If you google PHaMs the website should tell you what organisation to contact in your area. It is nice to see you back here.

Re: A long rave

Hey @Mazarita thanks for your positive encouragement in yesterday's post. Sorry to hear your appointment was frustrating. Looking forward to catching up in real time. May today be a good one for you.

PS I just read your rave about your history with Crohn's and the current gastro's invalidation of a disease you've lived with for so long. I really feel for you right now. I reckon it might be good to get some healthy anger out about this one ... punch a pillow, whatever works for you. Be kind to yourself as you feel all the feels about this. And hopefully your GP will validate your knowledge of your own body when you see them. Thinking of you my friend.

Re: A long rave

Goof morning, @everyone. Just stepped out of bed this day. I woke to the phone in the living room loudly calling me, leapt out of bed in case it was my friend who can be hard to contact at the moment. One second dreaming vividly, the next sprinting for the phone. It wasn't her. Needless to say I feel a bit wonky just now.

The great news is that I've woken up feeling much more at peace about what happened yesterday. The new sun of a new day has cleared out the worst of my upset and I'm ready to start a new and better day.

Will respond to everyone when I've had breakfast and settled a bit. Thank you to everyone here, just for being here.

Re: A long rave

Hi again all,

@eth, I think my lovely GP will be helpful when I see her, as usual. So grateful that this morning I don't have an obsessive mind and heart filled with yesterday's debacle. I can be calm and reasonable when I talk to the GP now.

@Faith-and-Hope, yippee to the dolphins! So glad they came out to soothe your heart and give you some inspiration.

@Former-Member. Niqua, I didn't realise that psoriasis could be on the inside either. You poor darling. How difficult the labour-type pains. I've had them on occasions in my life but luckily they are the exception not the rule. There is an anti-spasmodic medication that can be bought over the counter to help with that kind of thing. Might be worth asking about it next time you are in town (can't mention medication names on the forum, as you know, dammit). I feel for your child and for your mother too. Never too much information for me. I'm pretty used to the vagaries of bowels. I may see another specialist in due course. Will try the treatment he has suggested for me first (the suppositories) and also see what my GP has to suggest. You know me well to send me currawongs and dandelion fluff, thank you, lovely Niqua. Love to you always.

@catgirl, hello my feline friend. Great to hear that your eyes have settled, may it stay that way. Sending best wishes too that you click with your DBT psychologist. Also good to hear you are out and about again today.

@Former-Member, I do feel much better in this new day, a blessing. I cobbled together enough sleep in four shifts overnight. I did actually join a forum last night to discuss the crohns there too. It's a quiet forum and the responses so far have been kind but not nearly as insightful and caring as here, where I feel myself among real friends who understand the ins and outs of our emotional and mental responses to things like this. So kind of you to find a link for me too.

@Bunniekins, thanks for the good mornings on the other thread, and your lovely pictures. How is the knitting going today? What else is in store for you?

Hope @everyone has a wonderful day.

Re: A long rave

What are you doing today, @Faith-and-Hope?

I may have my friend coming, making the trek from her sister's place to here. Still no flat for her but, if she does make it down here today, we can then together go through the list of vacancies again with a fine tooth comb. She doesn't have a computer where she is, which makes the search the flat that bit harder, sadly. It is what it is. Hopefully something will come up for her soon. Other than that, may do some basic household jobs. Mainly just want to enjoy and be as productive as possible with the visit (if she's up to it). She's pretty down at the moment, want to generate some laughs together if possible.

Wondering what everyone else is up to today.

Re: A long rave

Hey Maz

Have an appt with son’s pdoc @Mazarita, but he was nasty to me last time I saw him ...... and I know it was not appropriate, which is hard to deal with ..... but part of our troubled circumstances. I am in a position where our “survival alliances” can be misconstrued as gaslighting ones ..... and with mr’s lack of insight into his own condition he is gaslighting me by default because he has no other logical explanation for my behaviour .....

Whew ..... take a breath ...... are you sorry you asked ? Lol ......

I will be back in a while. Glad you are catching up with your friend.
