A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Appleblossom, good to see you this morning (only just about to turn midday here as I'm writing this). Anything on for the day? Nothing planned here, just taking it as it comes really.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Faith-and-Hope (afternoon here) ☺

Thanks @Appleblossom ☺ There's not much left of my course to chip away at and with over 30 working years left I was only kind of kidding about getting to work before retirement. It's more other things (a person) that stand in the way of plans, but maybe chipping under or around them and it will be doable. Love the reef and nest images your post had me imagining. I don't at all regret the time I have had to be with my babies and littles, though I respect the different choices women want or need to make around this one.

Hope the first day of the calendar is going ok for all ☺

@MazaritaToday is relaxing at home alone, on the forum, in the garden and doing music with one cat. Maybe a few phone calls.

@CheerBearThe funniness of fish in a nest just occurred to me as I was writing.

I dont regret my time with my children either. I hope one day my daughter realises that. She had gone gung ho in the career thing but slowing down a little.

@Appleblossom, I'm heading off for another nap. Was up most of last night. Enjoy your peaceful day, the cat and the music.

Re: A long rave

Getting on to 1.30. Was asleep for a couple of hours, then awake again. Slept a lot of yesterday too. I seem to recall that many a new year has been like this, partly because I tend to stay up on new year's eve and catch the sunrise on january 1. Not that this old girl needs much of a reason to stay up all night.

Today I will try to have a blood test if the pathology place is open. I hope so, otherwise the results won't be available for my gut specialist appointment next week. That's if they'll even be processed by then. Can't be helped, may be lucky anyway.

Then I may end up at my friend's place again, possibly some more slow packing for her move on Friday and otherwise just making the most of each other's company while it lasts. After Friday she will be some distance from here and we won't be able to see each other anywhere near as much as we have since we've both been living closeby (about 10 years now). It's going to be a big change in my life! I imagine there will be a sudden void. I am going to miss her.

Aside from that, I need to tidy up this flat. As was the case last week at xmas, four days of C and I together in the flat has left it fairly messy. Would be great if I could get that done too. And that will probably be about it for the day.

One odd thing about the first day of the year. In between sleeps throughout the day and evening, I taught myself how to do something I've been wanting to know for ages: how to make animated gifs. It's a slow process and I don't have a full grasp on it yet, but I have made three of them to completion from bits of old movie footage I found. A small thing, but happy to have achieved this on the first day of the year even when most of what else I did was sleep!

Sending good vibes to anyone still reading.

Re: A long rave

Another wakeful dawn from out of the night. Woke after a few hours sleep at 2.30am and have been awake until now, getting on to 5.30am as I write these words. Didn't do anything I planned yesterday. Slept most of the day and night instead. In between sleeps, doing stuff on the media software. I expect that today will be different, pretty sure my friend will want help today. I hope so. Not that I hope she still needs help, just that I could use a reason to get out of the flat and talking with someone. C and I are often not big on conversation for some reason, and I can easily feel starved of it when it's just me alone during the days or the two of us in the evening (often in front of separate screens). I haven't been out of the flat for two to three days. Weather is moody at the moment, stormy, warm and very humid. The beach seems too hard at the moment, haven't been getting out there, though I've had good intentions.

Good morning, @CheerBear and everyone. New year is feeling a bit blah here so far. How's it going for you?

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita? Happy New Year. How are you today?

Got back from the bush yesterday evening. New years day was slow and easy out there. I watched the sun rise and then the moon rise at the end of the day. NYE first we had pizzas cooked in the home made pizza oven then we had a group ceremony with a talk by an aboriginal elder in her language translated by one of the share holders and a speech by the eldest child. Then a guy played saxophone and led us down to the river where we launched little boats with candles in them and made our affirmations for the year to come. Then back up the hill and a lovely camp fire and then some dancing. I crashed out around 10pm (too much wine with meds - it doesn't take much) and then woke again just before midnight and lay listening to the music and the countdown before drifting off again.

Heading off for Brisbane this afternoon but hoping to catch up with you before then. Looking forward to seeing my sister and hoping seeing Mum isn't as chaotic as it can be.

Happy New Year to @Shaz51 @Appleblossom @CheerBear @Faith-and-Hope @outlander @Former-Member @Bunniekins and anyone else around this morning.

I followed the chat about planning and realize I need to do more of it myself this year. I've fallen into the rut of having pretty empty, solitary days when I don't have essential appointments. I want to do more than just get to my appointments.
