A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita sorry to hear your headache persists. Hoping you are starting to have some relief and rest by now. Also very sorry to hear the current status for your friend. It's a shame it's come to this despite all the effort you've both put in.

My visit from my Darwin friend went really well. We had a BBQ last night and this morning went to the beach early and then to a cafe for a late breakfast. So good to see her and I'm very grateful that she made the effort to come here as part of her road trip. Yesterday's nerves were for nothing!

My support worker took me to a (slightly) heated pool yesterday before my Dr's appointment and I got some good exercise which took the edge off the anxiety somewhat. Hoping we can do that more often. I've been trying for 3 weeks to get approval to change the day of my weekly support - very frustrating trying to contact team leader in this organization. VERY! I can only see my psychologist on a Wednesday next year, not Thursday that it has been for 6 months, so I'm relying on the day being changed. Vent vent!!

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, thanks for the kind words. We are still searching for the remaining days but it's getting very late in the day now, and with xmas and new year, it's not looking like there'll be enough time to find anything, see it, apply, be approved, sign lease, move. But we won't give up until it's over. And my friend will need to keep the process going if she moves to her sister's, as she will still need a place. It will be different if that happens though. She'll be more on her own with it because her sister lives at a distance from here, and not public transport accessible.

So happy to hear your visit went so well! Sounds like a really lovely time you had together.

So great too that you are getting more and more into the swimming, both getting in at the beach, and at the pool.

I ended up with a similar frustration with my Phams. After my support worker finished up with me, I was supposed to be getting fortnightly phone calls from the team leader to check in with my progress. In about five months, I got three calls. I repeatedly also asked to be put on the newsletter so I would be notified of activities. Never got a single one. Finally, I was meant to 'graduate' at the xmas party in December but no-one contacted me until the day before the event, by which time I already had another appointment I couldn't get out of. Really bad form to end something that had been so helpful earlier on. Hope your Phams are willing to change the day, that would be crazy if they couldn't do that.

Okay, I'll end this now so that, if you're still around, we can chat in real time if you want. ox

Re: A long rave

Here now if you still are @Mazarita

What a shame PHaMs let you down like that.

Looking forward to a catch up.

Re: A long rave

We are missing each other very slightly today, @eth. But still a conversation, even if drawn out a little.

I have had some good sleep thanks and headache is feeling better. Recovering. Did some meditation in an armchair a little while ago, that felt very good. Some communications with friend about flats that have just hit the website in the past hour. Will be going around to see her in about half an hour probably (when she texts me she's finished what she's doing). Dressed and ready to go and have made the bed.

How is your day going?

Re: A long rave

I've been resting since my visitor left @Mazarita. Snoozing on and off after a late night and more grog than usual last night.

Glad to hear you are recovering today. Usually when I sit on my bed to meditate I fall asleep. I don't have room for an armchair in the cabin so my bed is also my couch.

Sending best wishes for a good outcome for your friend amongst the new properties listed today.

Re: A long rave

I often fall asleep when I try to meditate too, or drift in and out of the meditation. Still feels good.

Thanks for the good wishes ongoing for my friend. I'm off there now. Enjoy the rest of your day, @eth.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and others who may be around this morning. Hoping you've all had some good rest overnight and are having a peaceful start to your day.

We're doing advance cooking today for Christmas. I'm roasting sweet potato for a salad with rocket, roast capsicum, fetta, olives and pine nuts which I'll put together on Christmas morning. Sil is making baba ganuj. It's forecast to be 39 deg today so we started early.

What is everyone else up to today?

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth That salad sounds delicious. I've done my shopping. I really don't like shops, or crowds but it was not too bad. Next I have to oil the deck in my courtyard, which I've never done before. Hopefully it's not possible to mess up! It's hot here but not like where you are. Hope you can take it easy later on.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, @frog and anyone around today

Good to see you in this thread, @frog. You are braver than I with the shopping. And oiling a deck would do me in. Great that you are up and at em today.

@eth, agreeing that your salad and baba ganush sounds wonderful. 39 degrees is grim. Hot here again today, but it's the humidity here that does you in more than the actual heat, which rarely gets about mid 30s ever. I think it's hovering around 30 today, with close to 100% humidity.

My day is unplanned and I haven't been up long (but it's an hour earlier here than the rest of the east coast). C is bustling around. He has been to the shops and has just put on some music while he does things in the kitchen. Getting into the xmas spirit.

Re: A long rave

Hey @Mazarita hope your day is panning out ok. My deck oiling has ground to a halt - too hot! Will have to resume this evening. I am planning now so that I can have a *really* relaxed Christmas day.
