A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @outlander, @eth, @Former-Member, @Shaz51, @PeppiPatty, @CheerBear, @Faith-and-Hope and everyone,

Same thing tonight as last night. Bed at about 9pm. Awake again at 11pm. After midnight now and my sweat is drying in the slight breeze from the open glass doors. Another warm night. My sleep last night was broken up and I slept a lot during the day yesterday too, couldn't wake up all day really and did almost nothing. Didn't go outside the flat and couldn't even muster energy for the forum.

But tomorrow I'll be ringing my friend to see if she wants more company in her flat search. She saw a place off her own steam today, a vastly overpriced, tiny flat with no car space that she described as 'disgusting'. She hasn't heard anything from the place on Friday yet. Hoping hard there is good news for her about it tomorrow.

@eth, so glad to hear your friend is coming to visit. I remember you mentioning her. How exciting!

@outlander, know what you mean with the troubled sleep. Hope you are sleeping better tonight.

@Former-Member. Just in case you are able to get this message while you are away, sending hugs.

I'll keep this rave relatively short, just unwinding my days here, as usual, in this late night.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and all 🙂

Around the same time as you woke up last night I was lying on the lounge after moving from bed contemplating whether to even try to sleep and almost jumped online to see if anyone was up. It was the heat that did it to me too. It didn't drop much below 30 throughout the night (28 at the moment and it feels as cool as it has all evening). My fish weren't asleep until after 10. So annoying and makes the next day tough.

Well done to your friend on going and checking out somewhere on her own, though it's such a shame that it wasn't a decent place. I have everything crossed for you both that today is the day things turn around for her with the house. It is getting so close to the deadline 😞

Hope you got some sleep or rest last night and that the day ahead is good for you 💗

Re: A long rave

Good morning, @CheerBear. It was hotter where you are overnight. I'm just so prone to overheating in general from menopause. At the moment, I seem to be hot all the time. It is indeed getting too close to deadline for my friend. Wonder if you are still up and around this morning and what your plans are for the day. Hope it's a good one.

Re: A long rave

Hey @Mazarita. Had some tired LF as expected this morning. 4 more days - we can do four more surely!

Feeling for you with adding menopause to the heat :S Would be so yuck! Too hot makes me feel irritated and I see the irritation skyrocket with the hot that comes from menopause too. Grrr!

Little bits and pieces on today but nothing too hectic and I can turn down the pace a bit which is good. This afternoon we have another school thing but it is smaller scale and only for the last part of the day. The kids are all so excited about sharing their work and learning from the year which is nice.

Anything on for you other than potentially flat searching? Hope you have a good day 🙂

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @CheerBear @Former-Member @outlander and anyone else around.

Just back from early shopping with sil. Even at 8 am the supermarket was crowded. So glad we didn't leave it til closer to Christmas - it will be madness by then. Lots of chores today to make the place nice for my friend's visit. I spoke to her Sunday night and she's likely to get here tomorrow or Thurs instead of Fri as planned so I want to get everything done today.

Very warm here overnight too and broken sleep for me as well. Plus the mozzies are making their presence felt for the last few days.

@Mazarita hoping you've had some more rest since posting earlier (early morning cooler?) and very much hoping your friend has good news today.

@CheerBear hoping you enjoy the school thing and your kids' excitement rubs off on you.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth 🙂 Thanks. The kids excitement and enthusiasm can be a bit contagious sometimes. I'm going in to enjoy food made by quite little ones. I had a sneak peak at what was being prepared and there are lots of lollies and biscuits so I have no idea what kind of food they're making haha!

I have Christmas food shopping planned for the weekend which I am so much dreading already. Busy at 8am sounds not great at all.

Hope you enjoy your visit with your friend and that you get as much done today as you feel good about.

🙂

Re: A long rave

Hi @CheerBear, the surprising thing I find about menopause is that I can somehow laugh about it too. The changes to the body are so ridiculous and dramatic. I feel like a different person than I was physically a few years ago, and look rather different too. I guess they don't call it 'The Change' for nothing! Anyway, it's a relief to me that I can find humour in the midst of it. In other ways, of course, it's hard to deal with. But I'm also glad I haven't opted for HRT, though the physical changes I have experienced may have been less. Oddly, I don't think increased irritability has been part of the problems really.

Glad to hear you are in the midst of a quieter day today. Sounds like you could be on a sugar high after eating the little one's food.

As it's turning out I really have nothing on today. Friend and I talked on the phone and I sent her an email list of rental links to look at. Might end up there for dinner. She didn't get the flat from Friday.

Hi @eth, I can't imagine going shopping at 8am unless I'd been awake all night. Great to hear you sounding motivated to get the place ready for your friend's arrival. It sounds like she is coming for an extra day? Mozzies, hope you have screens.

Well, I am feeling down about my friend's lack of a home to go to as we are heading into xmas proper. Her move out date is 7 January. She is pretty much ready to throw in the towel on any more flat hunting while xmas is happening. Privately, I really think she needs to keep looking this week and on all days that are not public holidays until the end. The real estate agents are still open regular hours over the holiday time. It's up to her, of course, but I'm hoping we do have dinner tonight so I might be able to gently suggest this. I will help as she wants, of course.

Hi everyone, hope today is treating you well. It's still pretty warm here.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita here now if you're still around.

Sorry to hear your friend didn't get the flat from Friday. I agree about keeping on looking as much as possible in between the holidays. She only has 19 days total and several of them the agents won't be open. Hope she takes your encouragement well. You've been a stalwart for her and I admire you for that, but I don't want you to take on too much of her stress.

Re menopause - somehow I bypassed it. When I stopped taking the pill I never had another period. And possible hot flushes were hard to identify when I was living in the top end as it was so hot anyway. I'm glad to hear you manage humour in the midst of symptoms..

It's really hot here today. I do have a wall fan but I don't have screens yet. There is talk of getting them. I hope it happens before too much longer.

Thanks @CheerBear hope you're having fun at school with your littlies.

Re: A long rave

Screens are a must, @eth, though I have also lived in places without them. Not good for the health and really a bit tormenting. Thanks for your concern for me. It's unavoidable taking on some of her stress, having been so closely with her on the journey, and caring for her very much. But I haven't seen her as often since Friday so getting time to chill out in between at the moment. That's awesome that you bypassed menopause. I have read that it can be fairly painless for some women. Did you notice a lot of body changes?

In response to: Re: A long rave

Re: A long rave

I'm not sure about body changes @Mazarita. I have gained weight over recent years but this could also be due to bipolar meds. What changes are you experiencing?
