A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hello Mazy @Mazarita, Claire @outlander, @eth, @Shaz51, @Faith-and-Hope, @Appleblossom, and Everyone

I'm sitting under the shade of a beautiful big Gum tree in my super comfy recliner camp chair 🙂 There's a gentle cool breeze, birds and butterflies singing and fluttering by. I can hear the babbling creek, running along it's endless path. The crickets and bugs are even joining in the choir, a Kookaburra is doing a bit of a solo 🙂 My furry friends are all by my side, all snoozing 🙂 It's a beautiful day 😄

I just read through that link you sent me Maz, it sounds like me too, but like it says it's very similar to many anxieties. But I'm glad it's helping you, knowing this is relevant to your situation. It particularly struck home for me with the avoiding relationships, I can't even maintain friendships in the really real. It's actually a very sad thought for me, that you and so many others may feel the way I feel at times. I wish we could all be 'normal' 'well balanced' people, . . . but then again, that might be a little boring - I don't know.

Having your video friend coming is certainly getting a lot of house-work done 🙂 And although it's hard work, it's probably going to make you feel almost as good as the creative stuff 🙂 And a visitor is a really good motivator for the rubber duck 😉 It's also a real step forward in the whole avoidance thing, well done! How long before he comes? And talking about friends, any luck on the rental front? Your a very busy lady and I'm very proud of you for that

As camping always seems to do for me, my heads feeling so much better. I think it gives me a feeling of achievement, as well as being relaxing and somewhere different for me. I was looking at my set-up last night, and suddenly thought to myself . . . I haven't done bad for a broken old woman on her own 🙂 It took a bit for me to get to sleep last night, as it did the night before, I'm planning on taking a afternoon siesta today 😄

Love to all the need or want it, and a Kookaburra song for @CheerBear 🙂

Re: A long rave

Dear @eth

Well, yes, I am also not motivated at all.
I think…well, what do you think…..
  1. it’s the end of the year.
  2. Women, males, we are all getting a year older…. we are all tired from the year ?
@eth can we all just get through till the end of January ?
I’ve been doing some hand sewing and sleeping most of the days…….
Except when I need to work.
Lets give each other a break and just get through.
My homes a mess but someone has lent me a whizz bang steam cleaner to clean windows …another friend suggested I clean a little once per week. She is also very tired.
Suggestions :
...................................................................
Write daily to do lists.
Remember what your grateful for.
( I’m getting these ideas from @writingcooperative.com
do what makes you happy.
Like : read your favourite book.
call your best friend.
watch inspirational tube videos.
move your body.
Start small. Are you pushing yourself too much ?
Start small/Aim Big. So walk tiny steps to an idea...... think big imagining how it would be for you
Sometimes, we need to take a break because if we do too much, we can become irritated.
Go for a walk, visit a friend, or just watch a movie….

Hi Niqua, how awesome that moment you shared with us. I like your happier headspace, and could almost sense that your body was relaxing with that release of tension too. You haven't done bad indeed. I find your independence and self-reliance amazing. Love to you. @Former-Member

Hi @outlander, hope you get some better sleep tonight.

Hi @Shaz51, how did your appointments go?

Hi @PeppiPatty, I agree about getting tired at times related just to getting older. I'm also trying to remember gratitude every day. Perhaps we could share some gratitude things here from time to time. For example, today I'm grateful for another artist I've met who has been willing to collaborate and continue doing that, I hope we'll become friends. I feel the same gratitude to you, PP, for being open to our collaborations those years ago, and for becoming friends here.

Hi @eth, how has your day been? Hope your evening is gentle.

It's been a huge day here by comparison to my usual. Up at 7.30am, managed to get myself slowly moving on cleaning up the flat: the desk, the kitchen, the back courtyard. I even moved some furniture around, and did some spot vacuuming! Because I can only move fairly slowly when doing physical work, and need to take little rests in between small tasks, it took me all morning to do this. Some of the work was doing set-up on my sound recording equipment and making sure everything was ready and working okay to record my collaborator's voice. I finished at midday, the flat in a reasonable state to receive a guest I don't know very well yet. Then jumped in the shower, so I was ready too. My collaborator spent four hours here, which was a long time to manage my social anxiety (had only met him once in person before, our previous collaborations were done over the net). But we got on well again, though I was somewhat distracted by the heat today, which had me sweating down my face during the whole visit, lol. I even found myself wiping my face on the bottom of my dress! Not the smoothest look.

Within 15 minutes of his leaving, C and I were off out to our friend's place for dinner. No time for down time. But I managed to relax a bit after a while. And then home about 8.30. Don't ask me what I've been doing since then, mainly sitting in my chair recovering from the day. I did get suddenly teary and sorry for myself for a while there but writing here seems to have balanced my mind again. I have to admit I don't feel the most stable at the end of this day, again mainly the strain of the social anxiety I experience with people I'm not very familiar with (and even then sometimes).

And now I'm drinking a glass of wine, which I don't usually do on a week night. But there seemed to be something to celebrate.

Hi @anyone reading, hope you sleep and wake well.

Re: A long rave

Dear @Mazarita

Thank you for writing that long email and also: writing especially to me.

I really liked your message: this part made me think

" I did get suddenly teary and sorry for myself for a while there but writing here seems to have balanced my mind again. I have to admit I don't feel the most stable at the end of this day, again mainly the strain of the social anxiety I experience with people I'm not very familiar with (and even then sometimes). "

Is'nt this interesting.

@MazaritaIt feels like to me it's just that it's the end of the year, you are in control of your life in it but....... You and me and my dog Arlo, we are all tired. Who else is tired by the end of the year here?

Congratulations for doing so much today darling @Mazarita My home is a huge mess.....I am so tired.

Tonight, me and Mr g went to our old high school friend's place tonight for dinner. I cooked a huge lasagne. We got there and as soon as we got there, one friend, Mr A asked Mr g if he bought him some alcohol and .....I turned my head and they both went to the shops .........

I saw red.

As I'm taking to Mr B, the other friend, he was telling me how .............. Mr A has been. I was very empathetic, I have been seeing red about Mr A for a couple of years but have noticed how worse he's been lately.

I called Mr G and told him not to purchase any alcohol. Of course, Mr G, my husband was looking troubled and we ate our meal......... Mr A was being difficult and we left. Felt bad for Mr B.

We ave been arguing ever since. I feel awful, we just said sorry to each other and how much we love each other. We will discuss it tomorrow.

I think Mr A is medically ill. I am trying not to think about it.

Re: A long rave

Hi @PeppiPatty, this time of year is not called 'silly season' for nothing, it seems. I remember being kind of weird about this time of year other years too. At the moment here, there's either full to the brim days like today, or days or running almost empty. I also had a bad moment with C at one point tonight. Maybe we can put even this and your argument with Mr G down to the season, PP. Glad you said you loved each other. That's a tough situation right there with your friend bringing alcohol in to the situation. I remember that Mr G, your husband, doesn't do well with it. So hard when there's conflict. Hugs for the hard feelings along the way.

Re: A long rave

When you wrote that you remember Mr g problems with alcohol and drinking, I felt like just closing my eyes for a minute or two.

Thankyou.

Mr A poured out this huge glass of cheap wine and handed it to Mr g. I felt like crying at Mr A selfishness. I was so pleased when Mr g wanted to leave as soon as dinner was finished.

Yes, silly season. Soon lets do a virtual huge gathering of Sane forum people, tea and scones .............no stress ok ?

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and all ☺

Hoping your night had some rest and peace after yesterday Maz. So good to hear you managed that social anxiety which would make any social anything tiring and hard I think. I do not-so-smooth moves like your dress moment a lot 😆

I'm watching the giant bird feeder that is our apricot tree full of birds again this morning. It's also a bat feeder at night which I think is really cool to watch. A lot of the fruit here is ready to be picked now and it's delicious. There are plum trees right next to this one which taste so good too!

Thank you for your blanket etc comments also. Sending you hugs this morning and hoping your day is ok/good ❤

@Former-Member - thank you for your Kookaburra song yesterday! Hearing of your camping adventures makes me want to go and sit by a creek in a tent 😊

Hope the day has good in it for all here ☺
