A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Hi @eth, yes, it is great that we somehow thought of the massage table. We both also give neck and shoulder massages to our friend sometimes too, and C used to do that for me before we got the table. I think it's really natural for people to massage each other, when there's solid trust and friendship there. After 15 years of the three of us regularly hanging out together, we know each other pretty well.

I got to sleep about 3am last night. How's your sleep going lately? I don't feel swamped by the research but I recognised I am a bit obsessed at the moment. Emotionally I'm feeling much better about it than I was when I first heard it though. I think this is to do with feeling like I've got more of a detailed understanding of what it means.

I've never been camping alone. I'm not brave enough for that. I have travelled overseas alone though. It was a high anxiety experience for me, sometimes I was very scared indeed, but I also experienced some amazing things. These days I have no desire to travel.

Niqua, here is something to read about avoidant personality disorder. ox @Former-Member

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better about the new diagnosis and that understanding through research is helping. I guess it means you're clearer about questions to ask your therapist about it too.

Yesterday and today I've really struggled to turn my brain on. Getting more sleep overall but still broken every 2-3 hours. Back on ave 5 cigs a day but every day I'm determined to have less and then don't manage to.

Today is my psychologist appointment. Not sure what we'll be talking about today. The last 3 sessions have been disclosure in detail about past events and I'm hoping that's enough for the 'mapping' to start the EMDR.

My phams worker comes 1 hr before the ap't now and I have her til 1 1/2 hrs after it's finished (back on the 4 hours I was originally approved for) - and I can't think of what to do with the extra time. Have checked with Flourish and One Door drop-in centres and am not interested in what they do on Thursdays and other things I'm interested in are either on different days or wound up for Christmas. Any suggestions would be welcome. I'm so unmotivated it's hard to think of anything plus it seems like not long enough either side to do anything much once travel time is included.

Good morning, @eth

It's great that you are staying with your intention to reduce and abstain, even if falling off the wagon every day. If you can keep trying, it seems likely there will come a day when you manage to have none, and then can build up more days like that, and then no smoking at all (says I, still smoking ).

I hope you are able to move into a new phase of the EMDR therapy today. My phams worker and I used to go to the beach from time to time, walk together, talk, and work through some things that way. Maybe that's something to consider with yours today, after your psych appointment. I found that not every session had to be strictly activity based.

Other than that, perhaps you could sit together and write down some things you like to do, to help with your motivation? I'm a bit blank on other suggestions this morning.

Was up at 7.30 this morning after a pretty solid sleep last night (only short awakenings throughout night). Since then I've been slowly cleaning up the flat for my special visitor today. This is the guy who I've collaborated with on a couple of videos before, but we did most of it over the internet and have only met once in person. He's coming here today to record some voice on my equipment and to hang out and watch some of my other videos on the bigger screen too. C has met him too and will probably be home before our guest leaves. There's still a fair bit of cleaning to do, but I have to pace myself cos it's hot and I get tired very easily.

Anyway, will post this now so you don't have to wait too long for this reply. Hopefully you are still there in real time by the time I've posted.

Re: A long rave

Thanks for the suggestions @Mazarita. I was thinking I'll just tell her that I need some guidance and prompting from her. However, she is much younger than me and I don't really have a rapport with her. She's very conservative.

Enjoy your day of collaboration. And the results of your cleaning efforts.

Re: A long rave

@eth, pity about the lack of rapport with your Phams worker, and that she is very conservative. Mine was about 15 years younger than me but mature enough and funky enough to be a good match of personalities. I hope you find something worthwhile to do together today.

I still have a fair bit of cleaning to do but I am having to take it slowly. I actually felt like I was going to throw up earlier from the unusual morning effort! Can chat a bit longer if you feel like it.

Re: A long rave

If I were you @Mazarita I would close the doors of all rooms you will not be using and just focus on the room you will use.

I'm so brain dead I've been finding conversation difficult. Maybe I'm depressed because I keep giving in to the craving to smoke. Crazy! I have so many reasons not to do it.

Also feeling anxious about the case conference with NDIS, administrative appeals tribunal, and disability advocate tomorrow.

Re: A long rave

@eth, the bedroom doors will be shut. Just the living room, the bathroom, the courtyard need attention. Especially I need to clean my desk, since that's where we will be recording.

I know what you mean about feeling so brain dead you can't converse. I get like that too. Sometimes I can't answer on the forum for those reasons. You sound pretty depressed though. When is your next psychiatrist appointment? It's hard that you go manic on anti-depressants. I would find it a nightmare without them.

But you have a few different good reasons to be feeling a bit down or anxious too: the struggle of giving up smoking (one of the hardest addictions to kick, don't be too hard on yourself!) It's a big day for you tomorrow too, understandable that you might be having strong emotions related to that. Go easy.

Re: A long rave

Psychiatrist doesn't want to see me again until March @Mazarita but I can arrange an earlier appointment if I need it. Psychologist helps more coz it's more talk therapy than just about meds with psychiatrist. Thanks for your support today.

Re: A long rave

@eth, you're welcome, my friend. Hopefully you might feel a bit better after psychologist appointment.

I've got the dishwasher going now. Mainly there's just the desk to go. A biggish job as I need to pull a lot of stuff off it, try to get into awkward places to clean, will be pooped after.

Then I just need to get myself in the shower and set up the mike stuff. A lot for me to do this morning, by my standards. Taking it slowly seems to make it possible.

Sorry for the delay in response @Mazarita my uncle rang me. Take it easy getting ready. I'm sure you'll enjoy this afternoon. I have to get ready to go out now. Lots of love
