A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita @Appleblossom @outlander @Shaz51 @Former-Member @CheerBear hoping today goes well for you all.

Today is party day for sil and bro so we'll be getting ready for that most of the day. Sil's Mum is here so yesterday we went to the beach, did groceries and all had dinner together. The beach was gorgeous and I went in further than usual. I'm just no good at cold water after so many years in the top end. But got half way in and when waves came I got splashed up to my armpits - most refreshing!

Hoping I don't feel like too much of a wall flower this evening. Social anxiety is already being felt. I know they're all good people but I don't feel adequate in a crowd of academic professionals. It's the 'what do you do?' question that stumps me in these situations.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth,

The beach sounds brilliant!

I hear you loud and clear about the 'what do you do?', a bane of a question! Hugs for the social anxiety feelings, that I share.

Aside from that, it sounds like a good day ahead for you.

I'm sitting here at 9am sweating in my nightie. I think it may be a big day ahead here too. Depends on what happens with my close friend today and her housing search. Very soon, I need a shower (need being the operative word, lol), and then let the games begin.

Hi everyone, hope it's a good day ahead for all.

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita, Claire @outlander, @eth, @Appleblossom, @Shaz51 and everybody,
My days been pretty short so far, I've only been up for less than an hour, though I've already put some dishes away this morning 🙂 I slept well and woke well 🙂 I wake to 3 loving companions greeting me every morning, both dogs and the cat - the young fella {who doesn't sleep on the bed} sneaks up to join in the 'Good Morning' ritual as well 😉 Of course the fact that they'll all get breakfast right after the essential first bathroom visit, which is always imperative immediately upon opening my eyes 😄 in fact for the past week or so I've been woken up through the night with neccessary bathroom visits! Well, knowing they get fed after 'Good Mornings', I think that makes the first greetings we have even happier 😄 🙂
Good on you for getting so much done Mazy! Sounds like you did an entire sweep of the house! How'd that rubber Ducky go? Mine's doing Ok, but the little fellas a bit stinky, I might have skipped the furry bodies last splash - wouldn't hurt to polish all the rubber ducks in the household 😉
I'm so glad you caught that burst of energy 🙂 that you recognized it and appreciate it is a real bonus 🙂 I hope your on a regular build up of more, maybe due to the new dose of meds kicking in? Or your head slowly getting around things? I think once your friend is finally settled somewhere {and it will happen, nobody knows how or when is all} you might start to feel balanced and even more energy may build 🙂

I think it's self-empowering when you get on top of chores of your own purpose Appleblossom 🙂
What a huge week you've had! I can't imagine myself doing a solo, I think your very brave!! 🙂 When I was at school, I remember the Teachers would take me aside for 'oral exams' I think they were called {where you get up in front of the class and speak} because my voice would get really quite - I didn't do it on purpose, the air wouldn't go in and out of my lungs properly, so I couldn't, it was physically impossible for me. I also sort of stopped thinking, everything got really confusing - like I was slipping into a dream but not quite getting to dreaming. It wasn't pleasant and eventually, by high school, I was taken aside, often into another room {sometimes the staff room} to do the oral examinations. So the fact that you can not only function, but take big breaths and sing . . . I think that's amazing 🙂 😄 🙂

I'm still getting occasional off feelings in my insides, but still think I'm fine. There's still sick ones in my Center and they seem to continue feeling a bit blah for a while too. I think this virus may be quick to peak, but linger on fighting for a while? But I'm fine, just like to whinge a little 😄 I care very much about you too Claire ❤️ I care about you because you do 'live and let live', allowing people to be who they are ❤️ My relationship with you is stress and drama free 🙂 and I love you for it ❤️
Although there's no such thing as safe, I'm still trying to prove that there's such a thing as planning as safely as possible - even out there in the outside World. I think I'm still trying to prove it to myself that I can get out there and see some pretty places, share in a little of this Planet!! 🙂
Oh, that health of yours! The antibiotics did help a little, so hopefully the Dr will prescribe you more, or perhaps better ones? I think the pain and mh will improve positively when you get on top of this thing. Here's a loving Nanny-nag, it sounds like you should be drinking lots of water? I've been putting a dash of Apple Cider vinegar in a pop-top drink bottle each day and keeping it beside my chair. If it does nothing else, I think it's boosting my hydration 🙂
I'm sorry your so low ❤️ rest down there if you need, I'll be here anytime you want, to reach down my hand and help you back up, best I can ❤️ It's good that your not getting worse 🙂 Maybe you've come out of a tunnel, but you've got a lot of healing to do? ❤️
My day panned-out quite nicely 🙂 I did the dishes again! . . . I hope I'm getting back into that routine 😄 I put away the clothes in the bags hanging on my drawer knobs!! and brought in the stuff on the line and hung them in bags on the drawer knobs 😄 {but all the washing is dried and inside :)} I packed the back of the car!!! Haven't done the top yet, and have changed my system {yet again} - I've made a delux bed roll, opposed to having the bed made up ready to go; it makes more room for fancy reclining and gypsy swinging camp chairs 😄 😄 😄 It's still 'made up' ready to go, just rolled up as well. Covered in my new proper canvas tarp, so the dogs can sit on top whilst travelling; and there's enough room for the new cat travel cage, so the old fella can come too 😄 I'll be playing with the top today if things pan out how I'd like 🙂
Loads of love and giant hugs to you Claire ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Ye Ha for party day Eth 🙂 Sounds like you'll be having a busy day! I can almost feel all this Family energy going on, the beach sounded lovely 🙂 I'm sure you'll do fine tonight 🙂 Even if you are a bit of a pretty petal on the wall, it's still going to be a good night 😄 Just watching the monkeys performing in their show will be entertaining 😄 😉
I've got a big basket of love . . . would anybody like some?
Niqua

Re: A long rave

Thanks, @eth. Just texted with here and she's going to do the inspection today alone. Then she has brother and sister coming over for her brother's birthday. So looks like I'll catch up with her later in the day now. In between now and then, coffee meetup with another friend I haven't seen much this year. Before that, shower is required (big energy effort here).

Good morning, Niqua. Great to read you again this morning. Too groggy/dopey to reply properly just now but will chat a bit more about what you had to say later, @Former-Member.

Well, I'm going to go offline for a little while now, may be back again later after shower. Have a good day everyone!

Re: A long rave

Just got home from being out at a cafe with a friend I haven't been seeing much this year. We agreed we are going to try to at least meet at a cafe more often next year. For some reason there is anxiety in me about this friendship and some reluctance about keeping it going. But I suspect that may be part of my possible 'avoidant personality disorder' speaking. I'm glad I do push myself regularly to get out of my murky comfort zone, challenge my social anxieties and just do it. It was good to see her and great to get out of the flat and into the sun.

I've also now got a meetup with another recent friend on Thursday. We have already collaborated on a creative project and this meetup is about another. I will have social anxiety about that too, but will just do it anyway. The rewards outweigh the difficult emotions.

Hi Niqua, your post might possibly be setting a record for the number of smiley faces in a post on the SANE forum! Good to see you in smiling form. It also warms my heart to hear of your canine and feline companions, who greet you with love every morning.

Sounds like the stirrings of a routine happening with the dishes. Way to go with the washing all done, dry and inside. My dry washing is still on the line. But I polished the rubber duck today! Gee it feels good.

I'll take some of that love in the basket, Niqua. And send a big bunch of it back to you. @Former-Member

Hi @eth, how is your day going? I've been thinking about the 'what do you do' question. How about trying: 'I'm retired for health reasons, but I used to work in...'. I'm guessing in most cases the dreaded question is only being asked in order to generate some conversation. Answering about past work offers an invitation for more conversation about that. Hugs! I know the feeling of social anxieties very well.

Hi everyone, sending good cheer for the rest of your day and evening.

Re: A long rave

Good morninig @Mazarita and others here.

Thanks for the suggestion about responding to the question - strangely I didn't get asked once last night. Perhaps the friends of bro and sil who came already know my situation. I didn't actually engage much with most of them but rather kept busy with offering food and kitchen stuff. The cake I made worked out well. We ended up with 3 cakes - vegan, gluten free (mine) and 'gin and tonic' cake which was the actual birthday cake. Enough left over for treats today, my bro's birthday. And tonight we're going to a wonderful Japanese restaurant (my shout - yes I'm overspending but they really deserve it after all they've done for me).

Slept 10 hours on and off since then - the latest sleep in I've had since coming here. Must have been the after-effects of 4 gin and tonics! The theme of the gathering was 'gin and tonic under the avocado tree' in case it's not already obvious.

How is your day going today?

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, great that the question didn't arise. Being busy with food and kitchen stuff would have helped with the social anxiety, I imagine. I did the same at a family gathering at my mum's place when I was last there. High social anxiety, alleviated by being able to focus on serving. That's great that you are shouting dinner for bro and sil. I am so delighted you have this better life situation with them now.

I had an all-nighter last night. Researching personality disorders. Way too obsessive, I know! But reading about it in more depth is helping me better come to terms with it emotionally. I'm understanding it more, facing some harsh things, having compassion towards myself, even finding some humour in it in a weird way. At the same time not taking it as gospel either.

But doing that last night, meant I didn't get up until 3.15pm today. C came home shortly after. We went halves and bought each other a massage table for xmas. Today, we gave each other short massages. Great gift!

Then we went to friend's place for after dinner beverage. I put together an application for another place she is seeing on Thursday. It's only taking me about 10 minutes to do the applications now, have it down pretty pat.

And now home. Hope your dinner went great. Look forward to catching up again in real time soon.

Hi Niqua, I read on your general chit chat thread that you are going camping tomorrow! Where will you be heading? Is cat coming along too this time? Have a wonderful time, and take a backpack of love from me with you. Looking forward to the photos! @Former-Member

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita

Just popping in before I start the panic of sabotaging my efforts to get out the door 🙂

I'm heading to a local spot, a reserve that's meant to have a creek in it. I'm forming a plan that if it all works Ok {first time I've packed the roof rack with more weight}, I might leave it all in place and head off the the Center for xmas after it. Yes the old cat is coming too, I've rearranged things to fit his travel cage; although he'll spend all his time in a larger cage, it'll still be a different experience with different sights and sounds for him.

I'm glad your learning about personality disorders, I'm imagining the avoidance personality is top on the research list. Maybe if you don't mind, you could share what they say to do about such a disorder. Not that I've ever had that title thrown at me, but it kind of makes sense that everybody the suffers anxiety has it. I think just like there can be many things wrong with the muscles and bones etc., there can be many things wrong with the brain; and just like 1 condition in the muscle or bones can led to many other condition, I think it's the same with the brain.

I wish I was 1 of your real life friends - I'd have a go at your new massage table . . . I'd give and recieve 🙂 I hope that application you filled out is the application 😉 For you friends sake and yours

Glad to hear your dinner party went well @eth, and also glad all the excitement, serving and Gin gave you a decent nights sleep 🙂 Happy birthday to your Bro and enjoy the Japenese treats

Bye for now, I have no idea if there's reception where I'm going - so I mightn't catch up for a couple of days.

I'll just dip into my backpack and share a bit of the love

Niqua

Good morning @Mazarita and @Former-Member

What a great choice for a Chrissy present to each other @Mazarita. Hopefully you got some sleep last night and are not feeling swamped by all you've discovered with your research. Looking forward to a catch up in real time.

Have a wonderful camping trip @Former-Member. I miss the days when I was brave enough to go camping alone. I had a lot of wild adventures in those days, but not always very safe. I'm sure having your dogs with you makes all the difference. And hopefully your cat enjoys the trip too.

Wishing you both and anyone else here a good day.
