A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Gazza75 and @Former-Member

Gazza I am sure your brother knows you are there for him when he is able to reach out. Sometimes 'holding space' for someone else is all we can do. I feel for you because I know you care deeply about him.

Thanks @eth and @Former-Member

I'm worried he won't reach out to Me at all now. Fairly sure his wife is in his ear about Me. He's pretty proud and pig headed so even without her chirping away I'm doubtful he would ask Me for anything. Family has always been a big thing for him, but, now it seems to have fallen off the radar.

It's out of your hands and not your doing. I hear your sorrow that the status quo is such.

I am reading a book called A Long Way from No Go: A Memoir

you may have heard of the author: Tjanara Goreng Goreng

It is helping me as many issues overlap and she is inspiring. It is also showing me how incredibly neglected and alone I was in gowing up. It also makes me extra sad about my own children and the struggles and fragmentation in my famly despite my best efforts. I just have to let things go for a while with family. I am nearly 60 and it is time to focus on me, but my heart is heavy when I think about my son and daughter, and grandson.

Last night at choir was good. I had fun, experimented with voice types, and I had a moments of joy and appreciation instead of the endless sense of being invisible I had from chiuldhood or conflict for not fitting in well enough ...

A lady talked me into going home early on train. She said she takes me as I am, is always fun, friendly and intelligent and outside the box.

It is the same choir with the lady who really upset me and shamed/bullied me 6 months ago. I was within a metre of her, but we did not interact. We briefly interacted on Saturday during concert, but I kept it brusque and professional.

@Former-Member Your story is powerful. Firstly, even being in the armed forces takes guts, extra guts for a young girl, then going through issues, and then being locked up, let alone all the recovery.

The "Sexual objectification of women" is a mouthful of words, but a problem for both sexes, though it is the women who suffer most.

WIsh they had a teary or better sad emoticon on the forum.

If men could see us as people more, than a merely a means of getting rid of an urge, which is just sexual addiction and has little to do with relationship, we would all feel a lot better off.

I say I am "delicate" now when I am going through trauma triggers. However it has taken a lot of work, awareness, and resources to isolate my triggers, and be able to have any sort of clarity.

Take Care Long Ravers All

Good morning also @Zoe7 @Faith-and-Hope @outlander @Adge @Former-Member @CheerBear @Smc @frog @Teej and all passing through here today. Hope the day is starting gently for you all.

I have a support worker today but my psychologist has cancelled. That means it will be 3 weeks between appointments by the time I see her. That sort of break always makes me feel like I'm in a holding pattern. When I see her weekly I can really feel progress happening. Oh well ... patience Grasshopper!

So I'll be walking up the street to the chemist and back with her some distance behind me - another step towards getting around alone - and then doing grocery shopping. Have planned a couple of shared meals - salsa verde with baby potatoes and baked fish, and spinach and feta pie with salad. For the salsa we have most of the herbs in our garden. If you haven't heard of it google it - it's divine!

Sounds like an interesting read @Appleblossom . Well done interacting with the bully. Nice to hear about the lady you caught the train with. She sounds like she could be a keeper. Sorry to hear about things with son, daughter and grandson not having improved. As I said to Gazza, sometimes all we can do is hold space for them, and would add to that do as much self-nurturing as we can. They will come looking for you eventually I'm sure. But meanwhile you do a wonderful job of filling your life with positive activities. Take care xx

@Appleblossom

So brave of u to go back tp that choir.

I havent gone back to choir where lady triggered me off. Im just prac singing on my own. Im possibly about grade 6 level now. Want to get to about grade 8 level before i join another choir. I need to feel good about my voice. Its not my confident area even tho im quite good. Just the way i am. I seem to need to b quite good or almost excelling at something before i get a scrap of confidence. Whilst others can b crappy & still fit in. When i studied performing arts we had to sing solo to pass. I was the last person to get up. I was terrified! So i clung onto a chair & sang a swedish song. Hiding behind the language. Teacher stopped me & said i know u know music now take that up an octave. Well an octave in singing is huge but i did it & the class went crazy. I still dont know why cause i had no vocal training. My voice does attract attention tho. & did that 2nd time at choir. My voice teacher in .Melb said to sing in alto so i did. Im a mezzo possibly light. Lady next to me just didnt want me next to her & ranted on over the conductor to let me clearly know to go anywhere bu next to her. Id only been in the town a few wks i think. Wasnt on right meds so i was really emotional. The explosion went off in my head & i heard that familiar voice inside me say uv gotta get outa here so i ran out crying.

So im amazed u went back.

Ive found so many creatives r full of egos & so threatened by anyone new.its very sad. Singing to Karen carpenter cds daily kept me alive in my darkest yrs.

You said all the right things about men. Its why im single cause i want someone to befriend me first otherwise i just feel like an unpaid pro.

Only ever met one guy that made friends with me first & controlled his urge. That was the swedish man i fell in love with. I actually thought i was turning gay before i met him i was so against men. I did attract 2 women also. & it is only an urge. Cause when theyre in a relationship they can talk to u as a person.

Its all part of the changes in history.women have fought so hard to get this far.

I know what u mean about the neglected childhood. I know thats where my bpd stems from.

I had four bros & such a male dominant father that was against women working single mums so i wasnt important at all!

Eldest boy got everything he wanted & still does. Hes the one that molested me tho no1 in the family knows. I only remembered myself a few yrs ago. Hes gay & i think there has to be something wrong with a boy for him to do that to his young sister.

The big question do i tell my mother???

I think i need to let him know tho. I want nothing to do with him. He lives in London. Havent seen him for 16yrs
