A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth ! Thanks for tagging me here! Things with me are still a bit hectic with the bad real estate agent - this time she wants the keys back tomorrow at her office ( it’s not even an office she has- it’s a home office in a residential street!) and has been threatening to come around and collect them. This has put my friend/housemate into high anxiety where both of us are always looking out the window to see if she’s coming up the stairs. That’s how bad it is for us right now. My housemate has emailed her back this morning after she emailed her about the keys and has told the agent that she can’t get the keys without it going to VCAT to be heard and that if she comes over, the police will be called immediately. She has refused to respond now but it’s still pretty scary. We’ve got a legal appointment next Wednesday so we’ll go from there.

Gotta go!

@eth

Yea the nature of my issues seems to be out of the realm of being able to be fixed. I can tell people what's going on ... i can talk to them about it... but as for them being able to do anything about it ~ that's a different story...

@eudemonism here to listen when I can be. Sometimes life is busy for me but I drop in most days at some stage. I want to give you the same advice you gave @MDT a few minutes ago about counting the good points in your life and the good efforts you make.

@Former-Member thanks. I need the cold to go away within the next week because of my visit to my grandchildren coming up.

@Judi9877 I feel for you with the break down of things with your R E agent. Sounds like you'd be better off without her. How can she expect keys to be returned when you are still living there? There should be something in your lease about notice she is required to give you if she intends to visit. Hope the legal advice is helpful.

Re: A long rave

@Angels333 @eth Just returned from the GP - have a chest infection but I already knew that - so ABs and painkillers to help. She was going to give me the rest of the week off but I told her we have so much to do that I just can't afford anymore time off. At least tomorrow I can go in when i feel like it and leave when I need to. Hoping to get all the remaining 8 birdhouses finished tomorrow - can work with a large group to do that though as I won't have the responsibility of the whole class. The teacher that has the class on Thursdays is happy for me to do that so that is good news too.

It's a bugger @eth about the writing group being cancelled today but good that you will have time to edit your work. You can also have that little extra time for that cold to get better and will hopefully be a nicer experience for you next week if you are feeling better.

I am very lucky to have support that bulk bill - been so much easier to keep appointments knowing I don't have to worry about money. Both my pdoc and psych have said not to cancel any appointments if I am short but to tell them and they will sort it out - great support all around along with the care they have for me ...wish everyone here had such wonderful support.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Zoe7 I might have missed you this morning. Hope today goes according to plan for you and you get the birdhouses done today. Sorry to hear it's a chest infection and trust the ab's will help. My Dr always refuses them. Undecided about whether to see another Dr for some at this stage. I do really need to be healthier by next Wed, which is when I go to stay with my post-op adult child and their family. I'm using a cold and flu remedy from the chemist for the 1st time in many years, just a half dose as it could be too stimulating for me with the bipolar stuff in the background. It is giving me some relief but I know it's not a cure as such. Hoping the supplements I'm taking make the difference for faster recovery. Last time I caught a cold was nearly 2 years ago and it turned into quite a severe chest infection that lingered. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, so I hope yours clears up quickly. Of course it doesn't help that I'm a terribly addicted smoker - will be trying hard to cut right down as of today. I have a vape I can use but it doesn't satisfy me. One of my support workers tomorrow also uses one so I'm hoping she can help me get one I can travel with and sort the juice out so it satisfies my cravings better.

I have a day at home today and have a few chores to do including packing for my trip and domestics. Planning to rest a lot too. Will be here for a while if you feel like chatting.

Hope your day goes well.

Same goes to others who may be around this morning. Thinking of you and sending warm wishes @Doglover Really hope you are finding some relief at last and that the staff are actually listening to you by now.

I'm missing you heaps lately @Mazarita hope things are going well for you

I had some excellent news yesterday. Re NDIS funding driving lessons. Will post about it on the 'Anyone started with the NDIS?' thread.

Hi @eth and thanks for the reminder you are there for anyone needing a listening ear. I will keep that in mind today.

Enjoy your day at home, attending to chores.

Re: A long rave

Just about to shower and then head off to school @eth Still not feeling well but it will be an easy day ...and I can leave when I want if need be. Very much hoping to get everything done today though and then come home to rest. Tomorrow is already planned so won't need to worry about that. A few things to get organised but can also do that when I get home.

Hope you improve before you go away next week - it totally sucks being sick and having to travel makes it feel worse so positive wellness vibes for you.
