A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Better than I was yesterday @Shaz51 Planning on going back to work tomorrow. I don't have any duties so can stay out of the cold and that should help. I also have a couple of times of during the day so can catch up on some work then - makes it a little more manageable to get through.

Hope the meds help my sister - one less thing then for you to be concerned about

Re: A long rave

When are the topic Tuesdays held? Is it monthly? I came cross the one a couple weeks ago and was wondering if there was a particular week they are held? I know it is from 5-7 my time but not sure how often.

Thanks. Enjoyed the last one and would like to take part again. Loving the support and friendship here, even if I do not always say anything. Good to know there is a place that we can all get together and be among others that fully understand where we are and what we go through.

Tried doing too much today so a bit sore and tired now. Did the washing this morning then decided to try a bit of the yard work. Managed about 20 minutes but should not have. Got a light grass trimmer to try and get the weeds and stuff down because it costs around $100 per hour to get things done here. Might take me a week to get one side of the front yard to the other (only about 3-4m wide across the yard) but at least it will be cheaper. They all insist on being paid at least an hour to do it. I think if I try about 15 mins or so a day it should be doable as long as I don't have too much else on, and at least then I will have the satisfaction of doing it.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eudemonism

Sleep is very important and it can be so frustrating to not get enough. I notice you said you wished you had some sedatives to help you. Doctors can provide dosage plans for times when their patients cannot sleep but if you do not have such a plan from your doctor please be very cautious with accessing and taking anything as it can be very risky. We do not recommend you take anything without a doctor's plan.

Please take care,

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth did you get to water tai chi? Thanks for the shout out. The urges are really bad today, according to therapy I have to surf the urge. So I'm trying, I'm concerned about tomorrow as I have an appointment with my psychologist and I really want to be safe in the morning beforehand.

@outlander great to hear from you. Things have been tough with a funeral last Friday I coped really well through it all but feel myself crashing today, it's all catching up with me.

Hey @eudemonism @cutiepiekitty @Zoe7

Hey @Zoe7 are you feeling any better than yesterday?

@Shaz51 how are you?

Re: A long rave

Good morning to all passing here today. May it be peaceful and run smoothly.

@Zoe7 lucky you getting bulk billed. My gp seems to have stopped bulk billing me and my pdoc never did. The gp I'm only out of pocket about $30 but with the pdoc the gap can be as much as $200. Luckily I don't have to see either of them often at this stage and my weekly psychology is funded by NDIS now.

I did manage to write my story last night - spent about 3 hours on it, then checked my inbox to find that the group has been cancelled for this morning! Probably a good thing with me having this cold, and now at least I have a first draft to work on between now and the live reading next Tuesday.

Hope you are starting to feel better and can get to work to meet your bird feeder deadline. I'm sure the kids would be missing you.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eudemonism I'm sorry that's how it is for you. For me, even tho' I'm on a cocktail of psych meds, I find therapy extremely helpful. An essential part of my mixed management of bipolar 1 and complex PTSD. Meds alone don't give me strategies for dealing with daily challenges, maintaining and building relationships, and much more, and EMDR is making a huge difference to my PTSD trauma responses and flashbacks and nightmares.

I realise that it's horses for courses, different strokes for different folks, but wanted to share how it is for me.

Good morning @outlander @Former-Member @Judi9877 @cutiepiekitty @Shaz51 @Angels333

@Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Adge @Bunniekins @Appleblossom @Exoplanet @CheerBear @Teej

@Former-Member good on you for having the goal to get back to work. I'm not there yet, sometimes wonder if I ever will be. Still, you have to have a dream to make it come true.

@Shaz51 hope the increased dose of bp meds is going ok for you. I know from my Mum's experience that they can knock you around a bit at first.

@cutiepiekitty it sounds like you're doing a great job of cleaning your place up, both inside and out. Good for you, each little thing you get done can make you feel really good about yourself. Pacing yourself is a good move. Every little helps.

@Angels333 yes I did go. It was lovely being in the heated pool. Doing the water tai chi has so many benefits - it's totally a mindful practice plus helps with balance, mobility, right/left brain integration, strength ..... I just love it. I hope you get to your appointment this morning and have managed not to sh in the meanwhile. And that you can talk openly about having those urges with your psychologist. The more you tell them, the more they can help you.

@Appleblossom thinking of you heaps and hoping things are starting to settle down for your son. Stay strong my friend. Lots of love xx

@Exoplanet counting down the days with you. Sending heartfelt hugs and sitting with you as you prepare. You are amazingly strong in knowing what you want and making it happen and have shown here how resilient you are. You've got this!

@CheerBear and @Teej missing catching up with you more often. Hope things are going relatively smoothly for you both. Here for support anytime you tag me. I'm not getting around so many threads at the moment as I'm fighting a cold.

Thanks a lot for dropping in @Former-Member Good to see mods staying on top of things.
