A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins , thank you for your support, especially in the midst of what you are going through. I will keep you posted re pdoc - you may need to remind me though becasue my head consists of cotton wool and scrambled eggs at present - at least thats what it feels like.

Im really sorry to hear about Son2, that must be really tough. Who do you have living at home? I think I remember a daughter and Son1, do they al live with you. It must be really difficult on you all when Son2 is going through tough tims, especially with your own MH issues,. I'm sittng with your greenpea. I wish there was more I could do. Let's know how you get on wiith Son2 and pdoc on Friday. I hope pdoc is able to assist to help settle Son2 in some way.

Tonight is a difficult night for me. It is my brother's 50th birthday celebrations, he is having a big shindig and I cant be there because of MI. it's at a pub, noisy, there will be heaps of people there I haven't seen for years who would all be asking me how I am, what I've been up to etc. My brother, sil and myself talked about it and they really felt as much as they wanted me to be there that it wouldn;t be in my best interest given my current state of health. I would likely breakdown evey time someone asked me how I was. Everyone is used to me being really bright and bubbly and positivve, people wouldn't recognise the pwerson I now am. So it;s been a very tough nigh for me not being there to help celebrate my borther's birthday. I agree it would have been very difficult being there, but it's also very dofficult not ebing there, just in different ways. I have grieved and shed many a tear tonight, not just over not being there, but the fact that it really epitomises what MI has done to my life. It has basically destroued it and me not being at my brothers birthday is just one more evidence of that.

Anyway, enough from me. If I have repeaeated myself with anything I have said I'm sorry, my brain is a fog!

Thanks for listening and being there fore me greenpea. I'm thinking of you and really hope things improve with Son2 soon.

Love Dogover xxx

Sorry for all the typos. It's too hard to get the curser to go where I want it to go on the phone to go back and correct any typos, so they just have to stay there!

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth ,

Thank you for your support. I spoke to my OT who spoke to pdoc. The information he got from the pdoc that he has referred me to is that there will be a 7-10 day wait for a bed, but I spoke to triage at the hospital who said 3-4 weeks. Given the pdoc doesn;'t actually work full time for the hospital, he's just a consultant that sees specifici patients, I would have thought the hospital would have a better idea. I'm seeing my pdoc on Monday and will bring it up with him again.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Doglover How was your day today?

Thanks for your kind though re. Monday and seeing my psychologist I hope I can find some healing there too I'm really tired of the struggle in my brain.

You asked about my husband, he's pretty good about my MI he doesn't really have a choice but to support me, I think that's how he sees it. I have made things pretty rough for him at times with my MI. But I have had MI since I was 16 and that was almost 30 years ago so he knew when he married me that MI would always be there.

Also, you asked about my teaching. I'm a swimming instructor, I work a 7 hour shift on Saturdays and 3.5 hours on Tuesdays and that's all I can manage. I am sorry to hear that you can't work but you need to rest now and take care of your MH. I am really thinking about you @Doglover .

I was wondering, you mentioned in a previous post that you will be climbing the walls in hospital I was wondering if you could take any PRN whilst you're admitted. It might be a question for your psychiatrist.

Hoping you get a good night's sleep

Blessings Angels333

Re: A long rave

@Doglover Hey Doglover you did the right thing not going to your brother's 50th birthday. It would have been a nightmare for you. Mi is a weird thing. I cannot eat or drink in public because I feel the food and drink has been contiminated .... poisoned or drugged. So that means no restaurants, no taking food outside the house (although I have had a couple of successeswhere where I have eaten food keeping an eye on it at all times :D).

Early on in my illness my mind felt like scrambled eggs. Now that i am on the right medications that has stopped. With the right medications I am sure it will be the same result for you. May I ask what your diagnosis is? or are they still figuring that out?

Good morning @Bunniekins @Doglover @Angels333 @eudemonism @Sophia1@Shaz51 @saturnzoon @Adge @Meowmy @Gazza75 @outlander @CheerBear @Zoe7 @Appleblossom @Faith-and-Hope @TAB @Teej @frog Hope the night has been gentle and today starts peacefully. @cutiepiekitty @Feldspar @still_kickin @Macca00 this is another thread where it's a social place and, as the name suggests, it's ok to rave about anything. You can reach out and find support here too.

@Shaz51 really hope you're feeling better this morning and not coming down with something again. You have so much on your plate and enough to manage without your own health problems on top of it all. I think you're amazing.

@saturnzoon would love to talk some more about PNG memories if you feel like it sometime.

@CheerBear it feels like an age since we caught up. I hope things are going smoothly for you at the moment.

@Adge and @Sophia1 I loved what you said last night about happy tears and what a release crying can be. I've also found that after a bit of a cry we often sleep a lot better - brain chemistry - go figure!

@Zoe7 hope you had a good rest yesterday and overnight and get your prep done to your satisfaction today.

@Bunniekins really sorry to hear son2 is having troubles at the moment. Hope he settles down soon.

@Faith-and-Hope hope that the chaos has settled and you are starting to feel more organized in your new home.

@outlander thinking of you since you said you were being yelled at last night. Hope that didn't last long and that you got some rest overnight. I think you said you are working again today - take care.

@Doglover @Angels333 hoping you've had some rest overnight and have a better day today. Lovely to see all the support here.

@Doglover don't stress about delays responding - it happens with lots of us at times for various reasons. Even just seeing you under the support button is reassuring.

Sending warm vibes and happier times to everyone.

@Silenus tagging you too just coz'! I've been thinking about you lately and hope things are going well for you.
