A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @saturnzoon ,

I have been holding out til Monday til my health cover kicks in as you know. Saw my pdoc on Wednesday who did a referral and now I find out that it's going to be a 3-4 week wait for a bed. I've been waiting 2 months for insurance wait period, now I find theres another month wait for a bed The pdoc should have known there would be a wait and done the refrral erlier. Pretty bummed about it. Not that I'm wanting to go to hospital, I'm petrified of it, but every day that I wait is another day that I am afraid of what's going to happen, and another day of tortuous symptoms. Prettty annoyed about it, they should have known the situation. I just want to hurry up and get this over and done with, instead of going around in circles with terrible symptoms and stressing about how bad it's going to be in hosptial. Gggrrr.

Anyway, that's my rant. Sorry about that saturnzoon!

I hope everything is ok your end.

Take care!

PS: Sorry for the typos. It's really hard to correct them coz I can't get my curser to go where I want it to go!

Re: A long rave

Hi @Bunniekins , long time no speak. I am falling really behind on my forum replies as I have only been able to do it on my phone and it can take 1-2 hours to do a response if its a long one. I have now gone out and bought a keyboard that bluetooths to my phone and can use the keyboard to type so I'm hoping that's going to be a bit quicker and I will be able to catch up, then keep up. The keyboard is very different to what I'm used to though so im not as quick as I wouold like to be on it.

I see my pdoc on Monday. I will talk to him then about if there is anything that can be done. The thng is, I really dont want to be going into hospital, but then each day I wait I'm fretting and getting scared about going into hospital and whats going to happen and how bad it's going to be, not to mention having to endure these torturous symptoms, so I just want to get whatever I have to go through over and done with. I just hope the hospital stay does the job and that they are able to help me get better. I am not at all confident for many reasons which I have probably already explained but not the least of which that they are going to take me off short term anxiety meds which I've been on long term (horrible in itself) but there's no alternative treatment that they have found that works - they all make e worse. So there's no substitute. So I am petrified at what torture I'm going to have to go through. Maybe I should start a thread and see if anyone else has been admitted to hospital for the saem purpose.

Anyway, enoough about me. How are you doing greenpea. Is everything ok for you at the moment?

Thinking of you. xxx

PS: Sorry for all the typos, it's too hard to get my curser where I want it to go to enable e to go back and fix them so they just have to stay there!

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth ,

The hospital reckoned 3-4 weeks for bed in MH unit, but the pdoc that my pdoc referred me to reckons 7-10 days. Either way is a long wait with how I'm feeling now, but obviously the latter would be preferable. I see my pdoc on MOnday and do plan to talk with him about it. I guess at the end of the day if there's no beds, there's no beds. cant reallly kick someone out! Haha. But I am very disappointed that pdoc didn't think of that and get the referral process happening earlier. Not that I'm at all keen to go to hospital as you know, I am afraid of so many things, but I am also going through terrible symprtoms every day that are rather torturous so it's like, I've got more days of torturous symptoms to endure before going ointo hospital and enduring the torture of coming of short term anxiety meds that I've been on long term without a replacement because everything tey have tried has made me worse. I really don;t know how they are going to do this and I',\m really pretrified at what I'm going to have to go through Eth. If I could run away from it i would, unfortunately its with me wherever i go.

Anyway, enough about me Eth. How are you doing. I hope everything s ok your end and that you are doing well. Take care.

Doglover xxx

PS: Sorry about the typos - it's too hard to get my curser to where I want it to go to fix them as i am doing this on my phone and it just wonnt play the game.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Angels333 ,

This is a reply to your post from yesterday.It sounds like you had a nice day yesterday with catch up with friends (understand the need to be guarded re MI - shame though_) and lunch with hubby sounds nice. How is your hubby in regard to your MI? Is he understanding? Do you get support from him?

Glad you were feeling better yestrday re SH, that's good news. I hope you are stil improved today (you may have said so in a subsequent post that I haven't got to yet.

How come you have 7 hours of teaching on Saturday? What do you teach? It's good that you are able to work. I've been off work for 10 months and it is really gettting me down, not to mention the fact I'm worried they wont keep my job open for me, especially when I'm no closer to being better than I was 10 months ago.

I really hope you are doing ok today Angel and the SH thoughts have abated.

Thinking of you.

Love and blessings. xxx

PS: Sorry for any typos again

Re: A long rave

@Doglover Hey Doglover you are doing everything you can do. Let us know how it goes with pdoc on Monday. I will be interested to see if they can get you in any earlier. Am very tired. Son2 is stressing us all out. He is very manic at times and uses aggressive language. Seeing his pdoc on Friday so will hopefully get some joy with that.

Re: A long rave

I'm sorry you are still doing it tough @Angels333 , I wish there was more I could say. Is there anything that usually helps you at these times, either to soothe you or take your mind off it? I understand it's not always as easy as that.

I'm glad you have a psychologist appointment and DBT on Monday Angel, that's really good. I hope you find that helpful and that maybe things wil settle down for you, though I don;t want to make light of how difficult it must be. Just hoping that good will come out of Monday for you.

Thinking of you Angel and sending my love and blessings your way. xxx
