A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

@Doglover I had to redo his legs as they collapsed in the weather (he was stored outside at my parent's place). He also got wet when I moved him and his head got damaged so I have had to redo his head and put another coat of papier mache on his body. Only one side was damaged but have covered him completely. I completely reshaped his head because of the damage - he now has eyes that stick out rather than being just painted on. So he really has had a complete 'make over' and the next stage is repainting him. That will take a few days but I will do a little each night once all the papier mache is dry.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth , thank u again for ur support. Yes things r ridiculously tough. I dont know how much more of these torturous symptoms i can take. And they r not normal MI symptoms, like the internal burning sensation throughout my head and body, feeling like my head is lifting off to name a cpl. They dont seem to b normal symptoms, but they r so hard to bare. I hope i start getting better sleep. Taken an increased dose tonight so heres hoping. But it seems to me the more meds i take the worse i get which is one of the many reasons why i think im hyper sensitive to ingredients in the meds (plus multiple past history experiences with food and chemical sensitivities). That adds to my fear that im never going to get better.

Thank u for ur advise re public admisiion if necessary. As much as i dont want to go to our public hospital i hav accepted that it may b necessary for a short time if i cant hold out, but my husband is rly strongly against it. He is not comfortable that i will b safe there (for the moderators, that is simply my husbands opinion of this particular hospital), so he is rly pushing me to hold out. When i hav tried to say to him, what if i cant, his response is along the lines of, ur just going to hav to. So thats not easy as u can imagine.

Thanks for ur ongoing support @eth . I rly appreciate it, u rly hav bn a wonderful support to me. I said to Zoe that i wished i cld gather up all the ppl on here that hav rly supported me and hav u all with me, rostered on, so that i always had 1 of u to support me in person. That wld be so nice bcoz u r so much more understanding than most of the ppl i hav supporting me.

Thanks again @eth , my thoughts r with u.

@Doglover

Just answering your question from ndis thread.

A babysitter said it to a toddler, who started hitting lego buildings, and I liked it. I see it as firm yet gentle and playful.

I only restarted using it on this forum. It popped up in my head, and I used to say it to myself to calm myself down, then I shared it around.

I think its about whatever works for you, to self soothe, lower stress, panic or anger levels.

The other thing that is very gentle but persistent, can be the lapping of gentle waves ... in a rock pool ....

Thats a nice little story @Appleblossom . Gently Bently, i like it. I might adopt that i think.

I hav a relaxation cd that has sounds of the beach, waves lapping the shore. Sometimes it helps me other times it doesnt.

Night @Appleblossom . Thanks again for ur support. Xxx

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth , im still in bed at the moment (i live in wa). Id like to say im resting and relaxing but unfortunately my symptoms dont allow for that. Just checking the forums and i dont like to get up too early these days bcoz i find the day looms large ahead of me and i struggle to fill in the day. So i tend to laze around in bed for i while. Like i said, i wish i was sleeping, or that it was a restful lie in but unfortunately its not. All my symptoms r rly bad as per normal.

Dont hav a lot on today, need to do the fruit n veg shopping, and will probably give the dog a run if weather permits (its horrible at the moment) then just try n find things to do to fill in the day.

Ur day sounds rly nice Eth. I hope u hav a lovely time at ur friends art exhibition - what a lovely thing to do. Enjoy!

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth

Just catching up today - I have been dragging my emotional feet lately but the tough time is passing and so is winter and we have a another spring-like day in Melbourne - but

When Winter's here the adage ran

Can Spring be far behind?

You bet it can

I would love to go outside but I have a headache that is persisting - I have told my doctor about it - it's stress

Anyway

About telling your psychologist about your time on line - and maybe she has suggested but you have come to see that so much of your time on-line and helping others is not good for your mental health and balance. Only you know if she's right but I wonder how you feel about that

If it's affecting your life-balance and home-based activities then it could be a problem. However you really enjoy yourself doing it - so if that means a roster then maybe this would help -

I stay on-line as long as I feel like it and not just in the forum - I have other things I am interested in - eg on-line studies - I guess I stay here as long as I feel like it and if I don't feel like it I stay away -

But we all have different modes of activity - and we do what's working - I guess it is too much if it impacts into our other activites and causes some time-imbalance

Actually I got very expensive new glasses recently and they have a lamination on the lenses that reduces the blue-light effect from the computer - and TV and phone - that really works - it's been a few weeks

I don't know your family arrangments though - I live alone here and I am the only one I have to please - I attend to my place and actually cook quite a lot

I wish you the best with that and hope what you decide to do works out - I really don't like it myself when anyone questions what I am doing and why - it's my old age - that's my excuse for being stubborn about what I do - it's working for me too

That's the big quesion Eth - whatever you do - is it working for you
