A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Once we start to tag there are always people we miss. Sorry @Teej @PeppiPatty @lisajane @Kurra @Exoplanet

please nobody take it personally.

It has been a long journey for me to learn ... what "to overpersonalise" means ... when is it good to be personal and when not ...

anyway that was said to me around 1979 by a shrink in Royal Park when I was going for the psych nurse intake ...only took me 40 years to work that one out ...

Yeah they said I would have interpersonal probs on me file

Here is interesting talk ... IMO anyways ..

I like it for lots reasons .. also learned to look at aerial photos in HSC ...

Re: A long rave

@Appleblossom I have been trying to find the words to respond to your earlier post for sometime. I do remember those earlier chats we had and how much it helped me also at the time. I also remember how inviting, warm, welcoming and inclusive it felt back then. That came about from the incredible work the Community Managers, mods and members did working together to build that culture. But as with anything - changes occur and we have to find our way through those changes. The size of the forum does not allow for the familiarity with each other that we once had and that sense of community can become fragmented as groups break off to find that comfortable place again. It is unsustainable to be across all threads and what is going on for all members and inevitably there are groups within the wider community that develop. That is not the fault of anyone but a wider mirroring of what happens in any community. In saying that though I would not like to be a new member trying to enter the community now - I would not feel that same level of safety and support as I did when I first joined. I don't know what the answer is but it is a question that we need to be constantly asking - how do we provide an environment where everyone feels welcomed, valued and supported - and what steps can we take to ensure that that is the case for everyone - both new and existing members?

@Exoplanet @Appleblossom @Mazarita @Zoe7 @Shaz51 @eth @CheerBear @Adge @Angels333 Hi and good morning to everyone :). This bubbly pea is feeling a bit flat after dealing with 2 sick kidults over the weekend .... they are more work than little kids who would generally just sleep. Kiddies just sleep whilst kidults stay awake and moan and groan .... anyway enough grizzelling. I am contemplating going for a walk ... am feeling exhausted but maybe a walk might make me feel a bit better ....then again I might just curl up into my pea pod and go back to sleep :).

Have a great day everyone. Take good care of yourselves loads of love peaxxx

Re: A long rave

morning @Angels333 hope you had a relaxing weekend. Do you find your church community supportive? Both my aunts are long time church goers and they have strong faith, I think both the faith and community are very strengthening for them. How are you kids, do you have a partner? I'm single but happy that way. I'm off to workk today for my first unsupervised shift, I'm a bit nervous but also looking forward to it. Have a good Monday my friend, take iteasy on yourself x

Morning to all on the thread, hope your Monday is a peaceful one

Re: A long rave

@Zoe7 Hi Zoe7 I agree with everything that you have been talking about with @Appleblossom . For example I tried to say hi to a community guide a few months ago who knew me previously for ages and was totally ignored.... it hurt but I learnt my lesson and have not tried again. To be honest I expected more out of a community guide than to be just talking with a select few people. I mean what is the point of being a community guide if you only talk to one or two of your friends.

Anyway that is my few cents worth.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @BryanaCamp , I hope you have a good day at work, what type of work is it?

Yes my church family is supportive, most of them don't know the full story, just a few key people who are wonderful friends.

Yes I have a husband we have been marries for 19 years he is very supportive but struggles when I am in hospital etc. . The kids are all good I have one at Uni one trying to join the air force and my daughter is in yr 11. The kids are definitely easier now they're older. But I have different concerns, like will they drive safely, will they be late to work!....

And to everyone else reading good morning and have a beautiful day.

I have DBT today but I'll try and fit in the gym this morning beforehand.

Re: A long rave

@Bunniekins I hear what you are saying and am really sorry that was your experience Hon. I hope there was more to that oversight than just ignoring you. Sometimes we do not know what is going on for someone else and it may have simply been that there was more going on for that person at the time and it was not personal. Whatever the reason the important thing is it made you feel hurt and that is hard to deal with. I can understand your reluctance to reach out again but you have people here around you that love your morning messages and value your contribution. Take heart in that Hon because we here love our little pea

Re: A long rave

@Zoe7 Thank you Zoe7 I have always thought you would make a great community guide as you are always and I mean always regardless of how rotten you are feeling make the effort to answer messages posted to you. You are kind and caring and to be honest this is why when you were thinking of leaving the forum I was so devastated. The hole you would leave could not be filled and that is the truth. I hope I am not sounding selfish and I hope that you receive as much back as you give out on the boards. You are truly a star that shines here and don't ever forget it.

ps: I always know I can talk to you. xxx

Re: A long rave

Good morning all @Zoe7 @Bunniekins @Angels333 @CheerBear @outlander @Exoplanet @Adge @Shaz51 @Teej @Appleblossom @Faith-and-Hope @Meowmy @Doglover @Sam3 @Alone and anyone else around here today. I don't have a lot of words today, preoccupied about implementing my new plan, but can see the support and understanding you are giving each other at this time and it's wonderful.

@Zoe7 you've been writing beautiful eloquent messages of support to so many lately - always gives me pleasure to see you able to do that.

@Bunniekins still feeling a spark when I see you again. Hoping your kidults are better today and that you got the extra rest this morning.

If I'm a bit sporadic in giving support lately it's nothing personal to anyone, just still learning to balance being a community guide and on so many more threads with being able to share and be supported in what's going on for me, on and off the forums. Hoping for understanding with this. Doing my best in a challenging time. Even tho' I'm on the forums a lot more hours (daily and weekly) I don't feel like I'm supporting some people enough.

The joy at having a new NDIS plan come through has quickly been overtaken by anxiety and OCD cyclic thinking about how to make it work well and how to keep up with things like new consent forms, new service agreements etc. I am being asked to do them electronically and don't know how. And there's no-one here today to help me.

Feeling pressured.

Re: A long rave

They might be able to support you with step-by-step through electronic submissions at a public library @eth . There are generally computers to use and helpful librarians on hand to explain and guide. Alternatively you can take a notebook / laptop computer and connect to their wifi, and to their support and advice.
