A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita

Thank-you for the love I'm bundling up some more and sending some back 🙂

Oh you motorvated person you, making up an activity plan 🙂 I'm always making lists . . . and ignoring them 😄 I'm still doing ok with the dishes and bed-making, but in a way I think it's laziness! . . . it's actually easier keeping them done than it is going through the marathon mission of dealing with the mountains! 🙂

Yay for the rubber duckie dance 😄 We did that the other day here, I tend to put the walk off for that day, so we all stay clean for 24 hours; because I know as soon as we go there's going to be a pile of dirt somewhere that has to be rolled in! We've had a little rain the past couple of days, not enough to do much with my tank, but enough to turn those piles of dirt into . . . well . .. even more attractive rolling spots 😄 Which, as I knew would happen, got rolled in the moment we went out 🙂

Hope you enjoyed those clean sheets on your clean skin, it's just the most wonderful feeling 🙂

Lots of love to you Mazy

Niqua

Re: A long rave

In an okay mood late on a Saturday night. Nothing needs to be done and I can concentrate here and on my video, which I've just been working on for a while. Taking a break from that now.

Hi @eth, hope the days and nights have been treating you well. I wonder if our awakenings will synchronise at any time tonight. ox

I know you will be sleeping, Niqua, but hopefully this hello might be welcome on your awakening. Sending love and hoping good things for your day. @Former-Member

The activity plan has been helping me get through the hours better over the past few days, and get more housework done. I also got into some colouring today and finished an image I'd started months ago. Glad to have got out the colours again. Which makes me want to do some more video again. Off to do that now. Sleep well, fellow travellers.

Re: A long rave

Hi to you too @Mazarita and @PeppiPatty Good on you for the activity plan @Mazarita. I always have a running list of jobs to be done and usually get to one or two of them. Today I swept and made the bed - not much but better than nothing.

Sorry to hear of the difficult time you are having @PeppiPatty. Best wishes for improvement.

Very broken sleep here last night and my uncle dropping a late notice visit on me today so feeling somewhat stressed this morning. I love him but he's pushy about visits when it suits him. And spends the visit talking non-stop about his reality and not listening when I do talk.

Hoping everyone has a peaceful day today.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning @PeppiPatty,

Sorry about Mr X, can you go back and get more treatment? I cared for my Mum for 3 months when she was terminal. I remember coming to the very difficult decision that if she was still alive in 6 months I would have to find somewhere to put her in care - I could not keep doing it. Mainly it was my Father though, he made it so very difficult. She only lasted the 3 months they said she had, almost to the day.

Edward Snowden was a CIA fella who gave the public proof that all our electronic devices are being tapped, listened to, watched. I guess I think, how else are you supposed to keep an eye on Billions of people. I've since been told, I suppose it's a conspiracy, that events that have taken place - have been known and allowed to take place. What's the use of such a tool if they're not going to use it?

I hope your having a better day today.

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Good morning, everyone, very groggy here this morning. Will be going back to bed shortly. In the meantime, a couple of replies...

Good morning, @eth, almost here at the same time again. Sweeping and making the bed is an achievement in my book too. I don't like short notice visits either. I find that I have different conversational levels with different people. With some (like my nearby friend), I listen more than I speak. With others it's the reverse. Rarely do I find that happy middle ground really, but it's good when it happens. I get though that sometimes particular people can especially try our patience for whatever reason. Sometimes I think it's human chemistry at work. In any case, I hope your uncle's visit is more enjoyable than anticipated. Peace to you this day too. ox

Good morning, @PeppiPatty. Cool to see you too. I'm hearing that it's an especially difficult time for you at present, with the care you are giving to Mr X during his crisis. Sorry to hear of the bad news with your mum too. Relationships are not easy, and I know you have an especially difficult history with your mum. Great about the counselling for you and Mr X through Relationships Australia. I once saw a counsellor through them too. Above all, you deserve to be taken care of well and I hope some time arises soon when you can do this just for yourself more too. ox

@Former-Member, @CheerBear, @Appleblossom, @outlander, @Sans911 and everyone, hope the day ahead treats you all well. ox

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita,

Thank-you for your most welcome Hello for first thing this morning Good to hear you were in an ok mood last night 🙂 and that your plan is working 🙂 I'm also glad one creative outlet has led to another cherished one 🙂

I think my brains still trying to balance up Maz. If I could just get out and do something different, that seems to help, but I just can't seem to do it right now. So I guess I play the waiting game, do a bit of soul surfing and ride it out.

Love you

Niqua
