A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, not sure if you're aware that notifications are not working on the site at the moment. Since last night this has been a problem. Just posting here about it in case anyone checking this thread doesn't already know.

Today I'm a bit worn out after yesterday's efforts. Also, C has gone to work and put the old mobile with the pedometer app on it somewhere I can't find, so no steps counting today. Also, we are about to get a storm. I seem to be stuck inside today, for now at least.

Glad you got a break from thinking too much about NDIS issues while you were away. Good on you for following through on all options for support. Hopefully when you go to Canberra, there will be another break from worried thoughts of it for you.

Sending good wishes for things to go well for you today.

Hello Mazy

I just wanted to pop on and tell you there's a bunch of sparkling rubber duckies in this household now 😄 I'm going to use it as an excuse not to walk today 😉 I do feel a bit odd, what with my World not working like I expect it too! . . . but it's ok, it's still working 😄 I changed the sheets too, going to be slipping into something very comfortable tonight HaHa 😄 I feel like it's a confession to admit I haven't gotten to the dishes for a day or 2, . . . . but I got to them this afternoon too!! (trumpets).

There's nothing wrong with a slow day, particularly after a really busy one - you've got to work yourself up to this 5000 steps a day. Too much too soon might actually do harm and then you mightn't be able to step anywhere for a while! Maybe C accidentally on purpose put that phone somewhere out of sight 😉

You've put this thought in my head, Forumland in candle light, we're all sitting around the camp fire singing to guitar and ukulele music !! . . . and it makes me smile 😄

Streaming the love

Re: A long rave

Hi Niqua, sitting around a campfire with ukes and guitars, oh yes!

Happy to hear about your clean rubber ducks. Changing the sheets, and getting the dishes done. Big hoorays!

C and I ended up at our friend's place for take away dinner. I didn't really eat anything, just a few nibbles of potato scallop. But I've since eaten vita brits, had meds. The pedometer has clocked up a few hundred steps since about 4pm, just going from place to place and moving around the flat. I was able to connect it up again when C came home and found the phone. But I agree about not pushing too hard with the walking. It's been a hard day with the crohns today too. I'm sure that has contributed to my fatigue. Anyway, I also brought in the washing, folded, put some of it away. Made the bed. Big day planned tomorrow, probably won't be much on the forum until evening. Wish me luck in getting to three different activities during the day!

Hope you have watched something interesting on video tonight. Streaming love to you.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita thanks for letting me know about notifications not working. You may not see this post but if you do I'm here for a while and awake enough to chat.

Frustrating about your pedometer, glad to hear it turned up.

Hope you made it to your activities Tuesday.

Thanks for your good wishes. Today wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, mainly informative and housekeeping with Disability Advocacy - signing consent forms etc and being talked through the likely process from here.

Catch you soon I hope.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, all seems to be working again now with the notifications. Good to see you this morning. I was up very late last night and crashed before your last message. Glad to hear your appointment with disability advocacy was better than expected. The activities I mentioned were for today. But already I don't think I'm going to make it to the first: a yoga class at 9.30. I always knew it was going to be ambitious to get myself up and there at this time. But gut is still playing up from yesterday and I've had too little sleep. I think I will more likely put myself off yoga altogether if I go this morning. I'll try again next week.

Looking forward to our next 'in the moment' catch up. Meanwhile, glad to be messaging back and forth with you across times. Hope today is a good one. ox

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita the notification for your last post to me didn't come thru' for about 2 hours, until just now. Frustrating.

Hope you are sleeping now and that you get to your other activities today.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling too well. My adult child is currently doing dietary restrictions to see if they have Chrohn's. They've had abdominal pain on and off most of their life and have told many doctors and been given various reasons it might be happening (usually related to their menstrual cycle) and few diagnostics and no treatment. At least the current doctor seems to be taking it seriously and has done several tests and now referred to dietitian. The diet they are on is the 'low fod map' diet or something like that. Have you heard of it?

We will eventually get here at the same time

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, the special diet I know most about for Crohns is low res diet (low residue, or low fibre). This is because if the gut is inflamed, it gets further irritated with a lot of fibre in the diet. So, for times of Crohns flare up, it can be necessary to reduce or almost completely eliminate fibre. On occasions, I've been on liquid diet only. I don't know the diet you are referring to, but I hope your child's abdominal problems are properly identified and well treated as soon as possible.

I made it to art group, and to my psychologist appointment today. Two out of three, not too bad, I'm trying to tell myself. I'm pretty exhausted after just two activities. I don't think I could have got through a yoga class, let alone wake, shower and be ready early enough to get there. Will try again next week.

Hi everyone reading. Good wishes to you.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita thanks for the info on Crohns diet. I'll mention it to S.

Good to hear you made it to 2 of your outings yesterday. I know I couldn't handle doing 3 on one day.

Wondering if you're around at this time. I hope today is a good one for you if we don't catch up.
