A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Thanks @Mazarita

My son is having a hard time at the moment with an ED visit while I was out of town for the day, so I need the other stuff to keep me level to be there for him.

Re: A long rave

Sorry to hear about your son's ED visit, @Appleblossom. It's great that you have some things in your life to help keep balanced while caring for him.

Good morning @Mazarita 😊

It's not early early morning anymore but I'm up at my coffee spot waking up with the birds, thinking of you and hoping the day ahead is good for you 💓

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita sorry I missed you earlier. I was awake a few times overnight but didn't log on. I hope you're sleeping now but I'm here if you're not.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, up not long, still sleepy. Good amount of sleep here last night, even though I had one long waking in the middle of the night. I think I must have gone to bed about 8.30, so made up for the the waking hours there. Any plans today? I'm planning a bus ride to a shopping centre, where I want to post framed pictures to my mum, pick up prescriptions and maybe one or two other errands. The buses only run every half hour to this place so it will likely be a longish trip. Maybe get to the washing too.

I have a wrist band pedometer now and today is the second day of trying to count my steps. It's been a bit of a technological tangle trying to get the bluetooth on the device to work with an old mobile phone (couldn't get the app to work on my current one). I'm hoping today is the day the app starts recording my steps properly so I can keep a record of my walking over time. Fingers crossed. It could help me if I can get it fully operating.

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

Yay for the sleep! 😄 I hope your plans go well for the day. I'd like one of those pedometers for my young fella, I often wonder just how many circles he's run around me in a walk 🙂

My brains a bit off, it's not frizzled and it's all because the movie machine wasn't on. I must have looked like an idiot, I would have stood there for 5 minutes or more, tapping the blank screen. It was like I just couldn't believe it, that's the whole reason I came to town!?! I didn't waste the trip though and we had a nice walk in the forest, and I treated the dogs to a swim in the quarry dam; where I discovered the young fella isn't allergic to bees. They had put some {well a few banks of boxes of them} near the dam - of course he had to go and check it out, . . . I could see it happening before it happened 🙂 I know it's cruel, but he did near somersaults and I couldn't help but laugh 😄 But no swelling, not even hot spots, so he doesn't take after me there, because I'd puff up like a balloon!

I'm going to go to the next town over today and do some shopping. I need smokes and pet food, I actually can't think of any grocery type stuff I need (which is probably lucky 'cause my pay goes mainly on smokes!). I have to go to the library and get some movies, I ended up watching a Lord of the Rings movie {I own them}, but I've seen them soooooo many times I can almost recite them word for word! Got to do something about getting a bit less stinky, or I reckon I'll be risking being chucked out of the shops as a health hazard!! 😄

Re: A long rave

Hi Niqua, part one of my plans for the day is done - the shopping centre trip. Mum will get her parcel in the next day or two, and I've clocked up about 2km walking so far today (pedometer reading). I smiled about you wanting a pedometer for your dog.

Great that you salvaged the trip to town with a walk in the forest and a swim for the dogs. Glad to hear all is okay with the bee sting. Another smile for the dog's near somersault.

I've only been stung once by a bee in my whole life. It was when I was sitting in the covered outside area of the local fish and chip shop, waiting for dinner. The bee somehow got itself stuck under one of my sandal straps. I was very fast moving getting it out of there!!! After that it took forever to heal over properly, months!

Glad you had Lord of the Rings as an emergency backup for last night's viewing. Know what you mean about seeing some things too much. I'm like that with shows I like on TV such as Frasier, Friends, Seinfeld, even Star Trek sometimes, though I am able to watch a lot of that even on repeats. I've finished the entire four series of Reign now, enjoyed it and was very grateful to have something to take my interest while I've been having slump days. I would have been much more agitated than I was without that to distract. Now I'm trying to get myself back into gear to do things this week. Good start with the morning shopping trip today.

Sending some imaginary dancing rubber duckies your way.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita The pedometer sounds like a good idea. Glad to hear it worked for you and that you achieved yesterday's goals.

I had a quiet one yesterday but today I have an appointment to meet a disability advocate to help with appealing the NDIS decision through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Reality bites. Since my trip away I'd been feeling quite disconnected from all that stuff but today I have to fully dive into it. Have to compile a copy of every document that's gone to the NDIS so far. I'm nervous about the appointment too. Lots of anxiety around this process as it's the last avenue available for getting the NDIS to approve me for a support package. I've been awake a few times through the night both last night and the night before thinking about it, but too medicated to do night time chats,

Hope you are well today and achieve any plans.

Looking forward to connecting in real time.
