A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita and anyone else around tonight. Looks like I'll be awake for a while if anyone feels like a chat. There's a loud party happening a few doors away playing electronica, doof doof doof ...

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, I'm awake at the moment if you are still around.

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, hope the party next door didn't continue too long into the night. Was there any good music? I like some electronica, though having it blaring loud next door would be a bit much. Maybe you are still sleeping. Hope you are generally catching up well on rest and relaxation after your trip, in readiness for your next one.

No plans here today but feeling better already for the rise in meds. I didn't mention in my last post that I had, in fact, already upped my med dose for a couple of days prior to seeing my psychiatrist yesterday. He said he had no problem with me choosing the doses of this medication (an anti-histamine that has a sedating side effect but is not addictive). It helps both with sleeping and in calming down nerves in general. It's even available over the counter at the chemist. To use it for symptoms of bipolar is an inventive 'off-label' approach, and I find it very helpful.

Hi @Former-Member. Niqua, overcast here too today. There's been a bit of rain lately, not much. Here's hoping for some sun for your solar energy. I'm guessing you've run empty of energy at other times. Imagining it would be pretty uncomfortable without it. What guts it takes to be as self-sufficient as you are in the way you live.

There was water off the duck's back on Friday so am still feeling pretty fresh at the moment. After I've done it, I always marvel at how much better I feel and don't understand why I drag my feet so much at other times.

Hi @CheerBear, a later good morning to you today. Sending love to you and the fish for a lovely day today.

Hi @PeppiPatty, @Appleblossom, old friends, good cheer to you both! And to everyone reading.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

I hope the party wasn't too loud @eth

They say a change is as good as a holiday sometimes, so I'm glad the change in medication is giving your head a holiday Maz 😄

I've only been running out of power late at night as yet, and I haven't 'set' the secondary system up yet, maybe I'll do that today? - though I'm still a bit sticky! 😉

I took the young fella for a lead walk yesterday, we haven't done that for ages and although he doesn't get the run of an off-lead walk, he gets to see a lot more. We saw a few families of Kangaroos, it's getting pretty dry out here and they do start coming to the road and peoples properties in search of grass. Another thing we saw, which I thought was odd - another sign of how dry it's getting - we found a dead Emu on the side of the road. I think it must have been hit on the highway and just made it's way to there, as they don't usually come around people. There's been a lot less cars that I've noticed {don't know why}, but Human Beings didn't let us down and we had one idiot drive passed. I saw it tearing over the crest, bit of an idiot driver - nearly hit a Roo, only beeping the horn, not slowing down {I know it's cruel, but part of me thought I hope you hit the barstard 'cause it'll wreck your pretty car!} They beeped when they were pretty well on top of the animal, which can do the opposite to warning the animal, it can confuse/scare them and they may stop or try and change direction - basically causing an accident. Luckily the big Red kept going and got out of the way. Then this idiot drove pretty well directly at me and the young fella, guess they thought that was funny. We moved out of the way, but it brought to mind the fact that the nearest copper, who only works til midday, monday to friday {it was Saturday} is over half an hour away. There's been some pretty nasty hit-and-runs out here, one in particular I remember was horrible; a truck on the highway hit someone on a bicycle and dragged them for about a km before they detached them and fled! Been a few murders too, one just around the corner; and I didn't hear or know anything about it until I saw it on the internet news! You come out to the bush to get away from people . . . and it's still not safe to walk around the block! There was one more excitement for the young fella, another dog {behind a fence}. I had actually spoken to the owner of this dog once, while we were on another walk, asked if I could approach the fence so the dogs could meet - he said no as he didn't know how the dog would react; and seeing as he couldn't get a hold of the dog and it was putting on a pretty impressive act, I respect that and we don't appoach the fence - but it was still extrememly exciting for the young fella and he came out with some weird and wonderful whines and noises 😄 But my young fella is very good, once we'd past the other dog {he could still see him darting back and forward along his front fence} I was able to let him off and he just ran down our road towards home 🙂 Another successful mission completed 😄

I'll have to go to town and get a movie out of the machine today, or I'll be left a little out of sorts tonight. I watched my last library one last night - thought I was going to have my eyes opened by Edward Snowdens revelations, but the truth is I just didn't understand most of it. What's the use of revealing something that's so complicated it goes over the head of the everyday joe blow? And where's the revelation - I've always know Big Brother is watching everything we do. I think privacy is the same as freedom - it's just a personal perception. These 'tools' can't be as efficient as they make out, or there would be no terrorist attacks, murders or crimes . . they'd be picked up before they happened.

I'm kind of guessing you had a full nights sleep? Woo Hoo there's a cause for celebration 😄 How's thing going with C? Not having someone in my day to day life makes me think C would be the Center of your Universe - and if he's the kind of guy that can handle a few snaps here and there, I think it's a good strong Center 🙂

Lots of love to you Mazy

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Niqua, yes, full night's sleep. Things are fine with C and fortunately he doesn't suffer too many snaps from me at all these days, last week's was a rarity, though I guess it's a bit edgy living with someone as edgy inside as me. But I know I have some good points too. It's true, this home C and I share, and our friendship, is a solid centre.

I respect those that try to bring information to the world about how our privacy is being invaded. At the same time, I know what you mean. I think there are many of us who already feel very cynical about corporate and government control over our lives, the corruption and secrecy involved on their end and the invasive ways information is being used. I imagine the worst quite often in regards to all politics, so, as with you, actual revelations of these things are not really a surprise.

How frustrating and angering that safety is still an issue when you are living far from cities. When I was younger, I was a bit oblivious to this kind of thing, and quite fearless wandering around the streets of Melbourne alone at all hours of the day and night. Nowadays, I feel more vulnerable. I admire your guts in getting out with your young dog regardless.

Hope you set up the second solar system today and then maybe refresh the rubber duck. Fingers crossed for you. Love to you too.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Mazarita and @Former-Member hope you're having ok days today. The party didn't keep me awake for long as my meds keep me sleepy at night these days.

Still resting a lot after my trip. It was quite intense and constant company which I'm not used to. That's the only reason I can see for wanting so much time out since returning.

Following the discussion here but haven't much to say at the moment. Missing being more 'switched on' as I was when hypomanic, even though I know it's not a good state to be in in terms of the bipolar swings, I like the creativity that comes with it. Very little motivation for anything the last few days.

Glad to hear you feel the change of med doses is working for you @Mazarita.

In response to: Re: A long rave

Re: A long rave

@eth, I hear you about missing hypomania. I too enjoy my 'up' times, the inspired creativity that can go on for long, long bursts of concentration. And the high spirited feelings. Wouldn't it be great if we could strike just that balance between moods that might contain more of the energy and enthusiasm but without overtipping things, without falling back into holes.

My day is okay because I don't have the really agitated feelings I was having a few days ago. That's what has improved since upping the med. So, though I have done very little today except dress, make the bed, watch some TV and do some computing, I feel fairly relaxed. I'm contemplating going for a beach walk, though I am still low energy today. Still not sure yet whether I'll make it out there today.

It makes perfect sense to me that you might need a lot of recovery time after a period of intense social contact. I experience something very similar after my trips to Melbourne sometimes.

Hope to catch up with you for a chat in real time sometime soon. ox

Re: A long rave

Hi Ladies

Just chiming in about liking energy and creativity.

When I first started choirs I needed a few rest days to recover from a rehearsal.

hope your beach walk was good. @Mazarita

I had a singing day today. Zoo day tomorrow but only 3 hours, which will be quite enough.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Appleblossom, I can understand your need to recover after first starting choirs. I imagine it may have been daunting at first. Hope the singing was enjoyable today and that the animals hold fascination for you tomorrow. This afternoon I made it out for a 1km walk on the beach. I was glad for it.
