A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita 🙂 and Everyone

My child has their new car! 😄 They love it and are very appreciative to me! 😄 I'm guessing I'll probably have a little crash, I've done a lot of disassociating the past few days - it's the only way I can get out there and do stuff - I have to blur, it's the only way to stop the panic. I have very little actual idea what I've signed in how many days? I just had to 'trust' the professionals and left most of the 'working it out' to my childes end. I am anxious, I did struggle with this decision. I know I have willingly gotten into debt for the next 10 years, that would be financially devastating for me if my child doesn't make the payments. I know there is the chance they won't. So I guess I know I've done the best I could for them.

I have noticed I've had positive experiences with people too. I think this forum and the wonderful souls that frequent it, like you, have helped me see that Human Beings aren't all bad 🙂 But like you I have instinctive fears that will never go away, because I think they are essential for self-protection as we're not all good either - we are all, each and every one of us, both.

Even if the psych sessions are triggering fatigue, the fact that you find them wonderful can't be a bad thing, perhaps the tiredness is just a physical reaction you have to work through on your journey? It doesn't sound pleasant, but there are many worse things to have to travel through. Maybe it will help, knowing that you'll need a nap after the session? Good to hear you have a smoothie and plenty of water through the day, there's something you can know your doing to help 😄 I think the weather affects my joints a lot! Do you find it frustrating that something completely out of your control, like the weather, can make your day so completely different? I do!

Ah yes, my cooling compulsion! {which, by the way, includes squirting a hose inside my house, to wet the curtains and floors} 😄 Developed through necessity! Last Summer was the worst I've ever been through, menopause may have been a contributing factor, but I had a month of 40-45* heat, dropping only to the high 30's (if that) at night, without a days break - I hated it! That Summer created my camping bug, I want to find a cool camp spot at the bottom of Australia to escape the heat of my backyard in Summer! 😄 But I guess Global Warming is good for my neuro-biological disorder, because I think without last Summer (and this Forum) I may never have gone camping again!

I hope you have something your looking forward to today 🙂

Streaming lots of love to you

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Hi @Faith-and-Hope Eth is away now, she left yesterday. I think she's taking offline time while travelling and visiting friends where she used to live. And I think also visiting her adult child and family. A big trip. I hope she's enjoying.

Hi @Former-Member. Niqua, hooray for the new car!!!!! Sending love and best wishes the loan works out smoothly. Yes, we are all both lighter shades and darker, all different colours too in our internal spaces, some ugly, some beautiful. This seems to be the human condition we all share. Understanding this seems to give rise to compassion, something I too find here on the forum.

I don't want my instinctive fears to go away entirely. Fear has a function in some circumstances. But I might like a bit more breathing space from fear. It seems to constrict and distort my heart and mind still, even after lots of 'pushing of social envelopes' in an ongoing way. Here, I think my words are running away with me. I'm not sure I'm making sense any more.

Niqua, the thing I'm honestly looking forward to most of all today is having a few wines tonight. It's a Friday night (and occasionally Saturday night) thing C and I do. We enjoy each other tipsy, but only do it on these days.

Strong hugs to hold you from falling too fast after the high of organising your daughter's car. Let the descent onto more even emotional ground be gentle, dear Niqua. Streaming love.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Faith-and-Hope We cant remember everything all the time.

@Mazarita

COngrats @Former-Member for organising the car. I hope it was not too expensive and a viable debt.

I have just organised again to have my new stove and oven installed. So bring on the homemade pizza next week. Should be in next Wednesday.

For some reason it is something I kept putting off, made a few phone calls, put from one person to another, job not finished, never followed through etc etc. Then it became one of those horror jobs in my mind and had lots of SI associated with it. Anyway I have a new order number and a date of install. Fingers crossed all goes to plan.

I had many feelings while doing it but managed not to get too panicky on phone. Intense and determined, I took down details and he patiently waited on phone while I checked online.

I hope everything fits. The team that installs is it does it all the time so ...?? it should be alright.

For a job done but insides still dreadfully squirmy.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Appleblossom, a great achievement your stove coming next Wednesday. I remember you talking about it long ago. Didn't realise (or maybe remember) that it had become a painful stumbling block. Look forward to hearing it's installed and operating.

Hi @Shaz51, writing this while you are likely sleeping. I heard what you said tonight about us possibly being related through our Scottish ancestry. That would be amazing!

Hi @Faith-and-Hope, @CheerBear, @Former-Member and everyone.

Re: A long rave

Hi @Shaz51, how are you today? I am okay, though it's another very tired day and I slept until late morning. Having computer problems that mean I'm not able to watch 'Reign' at the moment. Feeling at a loose end but not enough energy to engage with anything. It could be worse. I'm just taking one step after another at the moment. More like one chair after another really, lol. Hugs sister.
