A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita and anyone else here at this time. Hoping you all have success with any plans today and are feeling well rested.

I'm heading off for a week tomorrow morning so I won't be here until after I get back. Feeling quite nervous about travelling alone but really I'll only be alone when in the air. I have friends and family putting me on and picking me up at departure and arrival places. And I've booked a 'meet and assist' at the airport where I have to change planes. So I should be ok. Needless to say my mind is coming up with 'what if ...' a fair bit but I'm trying to deal with it rationally and have plans to deal with any that do happen.

I'll be around today if anyone feels like a chat.

Re: A long rave

Good afternoon, @eth. Sounds like you really have the travel plans sorted. Hope you can relax as much as possible into the solid supports you have set in place. How is your lurgy going?

Good afternoon, @Former-Member. Niqua, it's awesome to hear that you have pushed through to success with helping your daughter. How wonderful, the maternal satisfaction you are experiencing from that. Great story about the man who gave you free parking. Aldis is so much cheaper than the regular supermarkets, and good quality food to, I find, with a high proportion of it made in Australia. I always have a new video project bubbling away. But I am not in the hands-on stage of anything just now. Mouth recovered fine after the dentist appointment here. Waiting for the public hospital to call me with a time and date for the next test. Don't see the gastro again until after that. Lots of love streaming back at you too!

I saw my psychologist yesterday, another wonderful session with her. But today I have been soooooo tired. Slept on and off until 1.30pm, part of it was a period of just falling asleep in the armchair. Still very tired. I get hit with these extra strong bouts of fatigue on a fairly regularly basis it seems. Both me and the psychologist think it's chronic fatigue from having Crohns disease since I was 18. Not panicking about it though, just a bit bored and finding it hard to do even computing today. But I've broken out of that to post this, so maybe I am on the up and will feel a lot better by the evening.

Hi @Teej, @Shaz51, @utopia, @Appleblossom and everyone, hope the day has been kind to you. If not, I hope the afternoon and evening are much better.

Re: A long rave

I'm heading off for the night to wind down before an early start in the morning tomorrow. But before I go I wanted to say goodnight here @Mazarita. I feel really thankful that I am part of forumland often, but it's a particularly strong feeling at the moment. I 'see' you around through your likes and comments lots and it makes me 'feel' you around. I really, really appreciate that.

I hope the night is good for you.

Night Mazarita 😊

Re: A long rave

Thanks for your wonderful goodnight message, @CheerBear. I feel your warm presence on the forum too, and am grateful you are here. Goodnight to you and the fish, sleep well.

Hi @Shaz51, yes it's already very noticable, the decline in energy levels over the years. Some of it seems down to the course of chronic disease. Another part of it seems to do with natural aging too. I try to be as philosophical about it as possible, especially the natural aging part. But it seems very hard to me that you have to keep working when you have serious illness. Hugs for what you go through, my scottish sister.

Re: A long rave

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂 and Everyone 😄

I'm really feeling quite pleased about my Centers whole transportational lift 🙂 But will feel even better when it's finally official {I'm hoping for a text or call when the car is collected :D} I will be glad when it is actually over, though the bank lady was a wonderful young lady, I had never done anything like it before and it is a little stressful. I think I still have to return yet to sign once more, but hearing that my child has actually got the vehicle will be a once in a lifetime feeling I think?

Fancy free parking giving me back some belief in Human nature 🙂 I agree Aldi's seems to have a better quality for a more reasonable price. So your at the bubbling creative stage of thoughts forming about your new project, I think that's sometime the most exciting part 🙂 It's good your mouth recovered fine, mine hasn't felt this good in many years! Almost goes against some instinct to willingly line up at a Dentist! 😄 But I can use logic in keeping what teeth I have for as long as I can 😉 In fact it almost makes sense because my mouth is so much better, to do what this professional, experienced Dentist says needs to be done to my teeth? . . . almost XD So your still waiting for the hospital to call, that can't be the best of fun? Is it a case of 'pack up and go' when they call?

I'm glad your session was wonderful yesterday, but wonder if it somehow triggers an electro-chemical reaction in the processes of your brain, that causes you to be tired? As it seems an extreme tired to fall asleep in the chair. I've had similar experienes of tiredness, where I struggle to hold my eyelids open; it's as if my muscles are working against my will and I'm just shutting down. I haven't had it for ages, but it's been happening at night . . . which is fine . . . in fact works wonderfully with going to bed and sleeping all night, so I'm not complaining - just saying, I think I know the feeling and it's almost like passing out. I know I'm a nag, I think I'm a 'fix-it' kind of person, and I know so many things can sometimes not be fixed; but I'm going to nag anyway, because it's something I can do, which is better than nothing Do you make sure you have some sort of fruit or vegi everyday and lets say a few glasses of water spread out through the day? Sometimes the simplest things done in a lifestyle manner can make a difference, it might not be very noticeable but then you know your doing that and it makes it a bit better 🙂

It's warm here today, the weather site is predicting 37. In my house at the moment it's only about 30-33, I have most of the windows and doors covered in material I wet so the breeze is cooled as it goes through, both the little 12 v fans going {but I haven't got the air-cooler out yet - don't think it will be long though} and a rectangular container with water to dip my feet in. One of the fans, made up of 4 internal computer fans wired onto a 5 candlestick stand, is in front of the container and cools the water in it; the other is suspended over my head, designed to blow down and they both work quite well in the area of my recliner 🙂

I think I should get off this computer and do something that takes my mind off of waiting for a phone call! 😄

Hope everyone has reasons to smile today 🙂

Niqua

Re: A long rave

Hi Niqua, I am very happy for you that the car is about to be collected. Happy for your daughter and family too. Big cheers for doing what must have been difficult with all the bank business. I'm glad that you are having positive experiences with people when you are out and about - the free parking man, the bank woman, the one who redirected you from off the track. Despite my instinctive fears that I never seem to be really free of, I have to say I find most people are benign or better in my actual everyday encounters these days. Yes! to the both of us finding belief in human nature.

I have wondered if the psych sessions might be triggering a fatigue response. An hour is a long time to talk mostly about myself. And the ground we cover is deep and exposing in many ways. So I guess it's not so surprising there could be a reaction to it. I do drink several glasses of water a day and almost every day I have a fruit smoothie made out of just fruit blended together. So I think I'm okay on those two fronts. t's hard to identify what exact thing could be the cause of fatigue in my case: crohns disease, bipolar or another external reason. I seem to be so sensitive that even the sudden weather change here yesterday could be a reason for fatigue in me. It's probably a mix of all these things.

Sounds like you have quite a complex of cooling devices around your home! The only thing that would worry me is possible danger of electrocution from the computer fans near the bucket and the one over your head. Hope you have it arranged safely!

More hugs and happy dances for your daughter's car!
