A long rave

Edit Feb 2018: This thread has evolved into a chat thread, which is fine by me. In addition, I encourage other members to feel free to post their own 'long raves' in here too if wished. I will continue to post my own longer raves from time to time, as well as chat with friends along the way.

Original post from May 2016:

First of all, a (very) long post alert. Please don't feel obliged to read or respond. Mainly I am writing today to clear my own head of some things. So, here goes...

Last week, I managed to get to all planned appointments and activities every day of the week except Sunday. That only amounts to one, maximum two, per day, but was an improvement on previous weeks and months. I've made all planned appointments in a week before, but there have not been so many appointments in so many days consecutively. Many of you will know that, prior to about mid last year, I spent years very rarely leaving the flat. This was since the last of my breakdowns from paid employment in 2008 (one of so many similar breakdowns from paid working, though none as devastating in consequence as this last one). With each of these breakdowns, the recovery time got longer and longer. It's taken eight years to recover much at all this time around.

This week, so far, I've made none of my appointments or activities. In fact, I've not showered for days. Embarrassing to admit but maybe helpful to own up to it. As I write I'm still in what I wore to bed, as I was all day yesterday and the day before. The weird thing is that I don't feel that bad in my emotions, just crashed out physically and lacking almost all motivation except to use the computer. In other words, my mind and fingertips are alert and active, in fact nervy and overactive as usual, but the rest of me is crashed out. Perhaps I have entered what some people call a bipolar 'mixed state'. Whatever the terminology, this is where I am and I've been here so many times before.

The way I see it, there are a number of possible reasons for the way I am after last week:

  • inner conflict about how helpful my psychologist treatment is for me (saw her on Friday);
  • trying to further reduce my tobacco intake (the struggle seems disproportionately huge and exhausting);
  • needing recovery time from a big week (by my standards);
  • simply another manifestation of bipolar disorder in me.

Regarding the psychologist. She is young compared to me and I have the feeling that she may not grasp the full extent of my situation, partly through lack of life experience. Perhaps she may particularly lack an understanding of the various physical ailments that complicate things with me, some age-related (menopause, musculo-skeletal problems), one of them a chronic illness (crohns disease). She is treating me with some techniques from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, something I honestly have never liked the sound of when I've read about it. The main 'homework' I have for this four week period is a sheet I am meant to fill out every night covering various things including tobacco use, coffee intake, isolating, unbalance eating, sleep patterns, lack of exercise. The sheet also includes sections monitoring mood every day. The problem I find is that monitoring and (by implication) tackling all these things at once is just overwhelming. I am significantly depressed after filling out the form because it seems to highlight all the ways I am failing rather than the ways I am succeeding. The psychologist has given me this sheet as homework once before and it had the same effect on me then. A full month long slump into depression is what followed. This sheet makes me feel very pressured to recover quickly from all of these things at once, a message that contradicts the advice of my psychiatrist (who I trust much more). His advice is to take it slowly and steadily and not feel rushed. As of yesterday, I stopped using the DBT form altogether. I am even considering giving up on the therapy with this psychologist after my next (sixth) session instead of seeing it through to the ten sessions my GP is willing to refer me for.

With the difficulty of further tobacco reduction, I am succeeding in reducing this a little more but the effort is gargantuan and seems to be sapping all the strength I have for making it out the door to my activities and appointments (or even to get dressed and showered). Writing here is just about the only thing that is distracting me from smoking again or thinking about it obsessively.

I've run out of steam on writing about it all now (a huge sigh of relief from any readers at this point).

I wonder if anyone else can make any sense of this.

Re: A long rave

Good morning @Mazarita @Shaz51 @utopia and thanks for the well wishes. With all the naps and sleep overnight I've notched up 10 hrs in 24 - that's heaps for me. And feeling somewhat better this morning. Good morning to anyone else who's around at this time.

@Mazarita hope your tummy has settled down by now. I think your note taking sounds like a really good idea. A great way to track your learning.

I've been feeling time pressure since starting the writing course so I'm putting it on hold until after my trip. It was really only arbitrary deadlines I was setting for myself as none of the work is submitted to anyone, or critiqued in any way and the lessons remain available after they come through (1 per week). I may well do better writing if not putting myself under the time constraints.

Had a yummy dinner down at the beach with bro and sil last night while the dog swam. It was glorious, we sat by an enclosed area called 'map of the world' which was so glassy the sky was reflected perfectly. Dark grey clouds surrounded by patches of pink. And the surf breaking beyond. A beautiful moment.

Hoping there are beautiful moments in everyone's days today.

Hello Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

Good ol' Vita Brits 🙂 they've even got a gluten free version or 2 😄 . . . and I've always got a box in the cupboard - quick easy feed, nice and easy on the insides and fills the whole! ;D

Paperwork has to taint even our most enjoyable pastimes! It does seems to be one of the most effient methods of keeping track of what ones doing though? 😉 My problem is I'm no good at it, I obsessively write lists of everything, on little bits of paper that end up everywhere 😄 Which generally leads to me getting pretty much nowhere with what I need to do 😄 🙂 😉 But that you've kept this working process up every few months for a couple of years - I'm thinking it's working for you 😉

Tut-Tut! with the meds being late {using friend priviledges to nag in a scolding manner! - I'm really pushing those priviledges!! :)} How's that rubber Ducky sparkling? Is it brilliant and gleaming or have a couple of the sequins fallen off? Is it an original oil painting, from the era of the ancestors that you have in it? I think that would be like a window to the past 🙂 I'm sure your cousin will love it 🙂

I've sent you a picture from my walk in a new section of State Forest that the critters and I went on yesterday. I had a lovely Sunday afternoon {once I realized it was Sunday not Monday :D}. I found a new section of fairly local state forest {there was a bit of a drive (perfect for a Sunday) involved}, walked along a beautiful dry creek bed; that was slow going for a poor old woman, but enjoyable and the dogs loved it! 🙂 I also had an adventure when I went off-forest-roads-track and a gentleman showed me how to get out of his paddocks and back onto the highway home 😄 Then I decided to get hot chips and chocolate for tea from the local Truck Stop on the way home - whoo Hoo . . . it was kind of the perfect Sunday for me 🙂

I've just recieved a text from my Center and things didn't go well with the phone call, I'll have to willing sit on a waiting chair again to see if there's another way I can help. That's deflating like a comic version of a balloon going down. It's not over yet.

Well I'd better get off the computer, dressed, in the car, out there, and do some stuff for the day 🙂

Re: A long rave

Hi @eth, great going on the sleep. I think I got to sleep about 2am, woke a couple of times for short periods, until getting up properly around 10.30am. Pretty good going here too. Sounds like a wise idea to be less strict with your time deadlines on the writing, to avoid unnecessary stress and for the good of the writing. Your visit to the beach last night sounds beautiful! A night time beach, a lovely thing. My special nature moment last night was seeing the moon in the sky as we came home from friend's place. A low slung crescent, golden yellow at the time we were driving.

Sending good vibes to you and everyone for today.

Edit: Niqua, we were posting at the same time on that last one! Snap! I'll respond to your new post very soon. @Former-Member

Re: A long rave

Hi @Former-Member. Niqua, I love the little poem that goes with the image of the upended tree. Writing is a gift you have, as others have said in response to your writing too. ox

Yes, good ole vities. I've been eating them or weetbix since I was a small child. When I've been especially poor, they've been a staple.

I don't really mind doing the process notes. It's true I get a bit impatient with writing them, like I want it finished sooner than it can be. But in a way I enjoy it too, remembering how things went in the creative process, deepening the memory of it by committing it to the page. Anyway, I finished writing them up tonight.

I can see you surrounded by bits of paper with things written on them as reminders. It probably works to some extent? Maybe you could designate a spot where all those bits of paper go, and get into the habit of putting the notes there.

I'm often late with my meds, I rarely take them like clockwork. I seem to get on okay with the approximate timing, though it is possible I might find things a little smoother if I was strict about it. The rubber ducky is not very shiny at the moment, but will be around tomorrow midday. I've started scheduling rubber ducky's around appointments. Over the past month or so, I've been generally doing it more.

Another smile that you weren't sure what day it was. I get that sometimes too. A walk in a dry creekbed sounds wonderful, though I might have been wary of snakes. Sounds like you got caught off road there, glad the man was kind. Hot chips and chocolate, what a combo!

Sorry to hear the arrangement about the car hasn't worked out. Hugs for your worry.

Wonder what your adventures today have been.

Hi @Shaz51, I too have heard cranberry juice is good and have had it when I've had UTIs. That and those ural sachets from the chemist. Glad to hear you are drinking lots of water. I'm trying to remember to do that more too now that the weather is getting warmer.

Hi @eth, @Teej, @utopia, and everyone.

Re: A long rave

Hi to you too @Mazarita hope you've had some good sleep overnight. Since I've had this cold I've been going back to bed a lot sooner when I wake in the middle of the night and having the discipline not to come on-line. But I am missing our chats.

@Former-Member I'm the same about having lists everywhere. I just counted 7! Record keeping of sleep, moods and meds atm plus getting ready to travel ... I need a list of my lists!!!

Re: A long rave

Good Morning Mazy @Mazarita 🙂

Happy my pic and little poem gave you joy, I like the rubber ducky's scheduling, you should be sparkling soon 😄

I do need to 'attack' my coffee table, that sits beside my recliner and' designate a spot' for notes and things again. At the moment it's rapidly turning into a mountain of rubble. I did have an area designated for 'bits and pieces' - a little drawer from a desk . . . but it's disappeared under the rubble! 😉

I hear you with the meds, not that I take anything that my body depends on, just anti-inflammatory; but I never used to take them unless I had discomfort - it's only been about a year that I've taken them on a daily basis . . . so I get ya - just make it a gentle nag then, because I have been feeling better since I've taken them properly 🙂

I very often don't know what day it is, or month .. . usually I can remember the current year 😄 But I've had times when things that I know I can remember, just won't come. It is almost like some sort of amnesia. I think it's caused by panic and creates panic, I think 'panic' is an electro-chemical reaction in the brain. My brain 'problems' set themselves off, just like my brain is working like a scratched record with 'healing' injuries that aren't there on my skin, joints and discs. It's a little bit like guiding something that's on auto-destruct! 😄

It is coming into {well, the flowers are blooming, baby birds are beginning to show up, as are bugs, and it's getting quite warm most days now} snake season. I walk on cleared tracks and carry bandages and Vit C, there's not much else I can do. The dogs don't stick to the track much, but I know snakes can 'hear' extremely well, especially with vibration through their jaws; so I hope that with myself and 2 puppies galloping around the bush, the snakes will take cover! 🙂

I do rely on my GPS rather heavily when I go places, particularly ones I haven't been to before 🙂 I have noticed, when faced with more country or large land owner type people; when you ask for help, they are generally much friendlier and often very helpful 🙂 My gadget was still happily telling me to go straight ahead for many kilometers when we 'bumped' into each other, the road had definitely turned into a track that wasn't used much; I was still enjoying the drive, but who knows where I would have ended up and at what point I may have to have turned around because one of the 'rough spots' where too rough?

I bought more chocolate while I was shopping in the big city yesterday! (00) I didn't willingly sit on a waiting chair yesterday, I think I'll go in and do that today; as I remembered the lady I had spoken to was away until today. But yesterday wasn't wasted, I went into the big smoke and made the appointment for my dental x-ray! I've only been putting that off for weeks, if not months by now; 3PM Friday next week, I'll be getting it done! (oo) I have a little story to go with that momentous occasion. I diligently followed my GPS to the address for the x-ray place, but, as often happens, when I got close I seem to miss a turn or something and had to 'do the block'. I decided I was close enough and would just look for a carpark in the shade for my little fella {I left the young fella at home as I knew it would be a long day and he would get extremely bored sitting in the back of the ute for that many hours - the little fella seems to actually like coming as he gets to ride in the front with me (when the young fella's not there) and I just put him in the back when I park}. I found a car park, a paid one but I decided it was worth it to make the appointment and get it done. That and smokes were my main mission in the City! 😄 I pulled up into a fully shaded spot, got out, walked over to the ticket machine and stood there for a moment. First I had to figure out how to use it, then I fumbled around in my handbag and found my change purse, and poured what change I had onto the palm of my hand. I had a $2 coin, just as I found the slot to put it in and slid it down a gentleman called out from the other side of the car park, waving a white slip of paper. With my coin in the machine, waiting for me to press some button I turned to see he was handing me this slip of paper. He said something in a very oriental accent, my brain knew what was going on, though I can't remember what was said; I pushed the 'return coin' button and retrieved my coin, thanked him many times, returned to my car {I don't really know 'car-park' rules, but I guessed I should put it on my dashboard to show I had it}, read the ticket - it had until 5pm, it was about 3pm at a guess. I had all afternoon to make the appointment 😄

It was that kind gesture and gift of time that led me to decide to take a walk into the main street of the city, as the car park was only 1 block away from it, after I'd sucessfully and painlessly made the x-ray appointment. I thought I'd get my smokes and a cold drink while I was parked for free 🙂 There where plenty of coffe shops and places I could get a drink, but I wanted a tobaconist or a large grocery store. I had to walk 4 or 5 city blocks to find a shopping mall with one in it and then traverse the lengths of 3 or 4 levels to reach a Coles I think it was. But I did get my smokes and a cold drink; and back to the car in time to go to my favourite Aldi's 🙂 It was a big day and I can't say I'm chaffing at the bit to willingly go sit in a waiting chair today.

So for now I'm still sitting in my recliner in my yellow T-shirt and summer dressing gown, contemplating coffee number 2 and then getting up, dressed and just doing it so its done 🙂 Do you have a new video project, my fuzzy memory recalls that you do? Will you be getting back into it now that you've done the writing process? How's your mouth from your recent dentist appointment {hope I've remembered that right too ;)} and when do you see the gut specialist next?

Well this rave is in danger of turning into a rant of mumbles. I'd better get off and actually do something 🙂 Lots of love streaming right at ya

Hi @Mazarita @Shaz51

I was just in a scottish town that pretends to be Brigadoon in Apiril ... with plenty of pics of grand Highlanders and an art deco pic of St Andrews.

Also has a Great Glow Worm Glen @Former-Member with trees like that.

Hi @eth @utopia

Best wishes and thoughts humming your various ways.
