Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Edit: This has evolved to become a vent thread and supportive thread. Everyone is welcome to come, vent. say hello, and especially seek support with their intrusive thoughts.

--

I've been newly diagnosed with GAD, depression and OCD. I'm in my mid 30s and have been dealing with this stuff my entire adult life. The tipping point was severe post natal depression that I almost didn't survive. I'm getting help for me, but also because I don't want my kid to pick up my issues.

Often my intrusive thoughts are about world events, but at the moment they're suicidal. They push their way into everything i do/think and I'm so exhausted, just trying to ignore them. It's scary and I'm suffering insomnia. I'm currently off work for this week while I adjust to new meds, and my GP and psychologist are suggesting hospitalisation.

I've been trying mindfulness and exercise, as well as limiting alcohol (which I find hard).

So I guess I'm looking for suggestions and support. This mental health journey is so new for me and I feel very alone. I want to make it through this.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it. I just also want to state that I am currently safe and with family.

Happy belated birthday @Molliex, and well done on these achievements .... ❣️

I hope once your friends and family are there and everyone settles in you can relax a bit progressively, and be in the joy of the moment. Sometimes it can be about giving ourselves permission to enjoy something, like, it’s okay to do that.

Hugs and best wishes .....

Re: Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Hi @Molliex and thank you for the update, which was mostly pretty positive. A big pat on the back for managing not to SH last night! No matter the reasons for it, its still a positive step. I dont think any of us want our friends or family to see us vulnerable, so I think its pretty normal to try to shield others from 'the mess'. I understand the shame angle too, even though I would argue that there should not be any shame in your illness. Would you be ashamed at being ill with a physical ailment? Likely not ... your battle with SH is no different. Unfortunately there is that stigma involved ... more likely within our own minds more so than others around us. We are so often our own worst critics. I'm glad you had the fortitude to approach your GP about your continuing concerns about your SH. Equally pleased that he was able to provide you with some coping techniques.

Today sounds like it will be a lovely day for you and your family and friends. A belated birthday celebration sounds perfect. Perhaps a symbolic thing too, to woohoo the fact that you are indeed still with us, despite the many challenges you have endured of late. That is a victory in itself. I love your optimism that today is to be one of your better days ... I certainly hope it will be too. I send you a birthday hug too, along with the hope that your future is looking assured and brighter than it has done in some time.

Thank you for the wonderful birthday wishes. It really warmed my heart. I'm grateful to have this community 💜💚

I had a great party. It was really fun and everyone had a great time. Unfortunately I did SH quite badly. I'm really disappointed in myself. Just too many emotions to process I think. Today is a new day, and I'm just going to keep trying 🌻💚🌻💚🌻
