Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Edit: This has evolved to become a vent thread and supportive thread. Everyone is welcome to come, vent. say hello, and especially seek support with their intrusive thoughts.

--

I've been newly diagnosed with GAD, depression and OCD. I'm in my mid 30s and have been dealing with this stuff my entire adult life. The tipping point was severe post natal depression that I almost didn't survive. I'm getting help for me, but also because I don't want my kid to pick up my issues.

Often my intrusive thoughts are about world events, but at the moment they're suicidal. They push their way into everything i do/think and I'm so exhausted, just trying to ignore them. It's scary and I'm suffering insomnia. I'm currently off work for this week while I adjust to new meds, and my GP and psychologist are suggesting hospitalisation.

I've been trying mindfulness and exercise, as well as limiting alcohol (which I find hard).

So I guess I'm looking for suggestions and support. This mental health journey is so new for me and I feel very alone. I want to make it through this.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it. I just also want to state that I am currently safe and with family.

Re: Dealing with intrusive thoughts - my struggle!

Well today I'm having a belated birthday party with some friends and family. I haven't celebrated my birthday for a long time, but given the challenges of this year, I thought celebrating I was still here was something important to do.

They're coming around here and we'll have some nice food and drinks. Kids will play in the inflatable pool. It will be nice, but of course the anxiety is there.

Last night I managed not to SH for the first time in 2weeks. So that's positive. I think it's mostly because I'm ashamed and don't want my friends and family to see the mess.

I saw my Dr yesterday because I was worried about the SH. He's given me a few coping techniques, so hopefully I can reduce this.

Anyway, feeling anxious but optimistic that today will be one of the better ones.

Sending hugs and love to all passing through. I hope the weekend is kind to you.

Hi @Molliex

Congrats on not SHing - that is good news. Not wanting to feel ashamed is a good reason for not doing it but then - it's not something you do for fun is it - so imo it's no reason to be ashamed - but then you are so that's the point to start from. It's really great you saw your doctor about it - you have some back up and good suggestions from him

And I am sending Belated many happeries for your birthday - how excellent that you are having people around for a party - that should be fun - I can be sporadic about being here so I missed any birthday greetings but I am sending them now

It sound optimistic today - I am sending hugs and best wishes back and aw - darn - I live in Melbourne - the weather is atrocious atm. I'm taking a moment to look at my weather app

This is terrible but Melbourneish - it's our third wet weekend in a row - I hope you have better weather wherever you are
