Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Hi All

There is a thread operating on the Lived Experience Forum under Night Shift where members who are having trouble sleeping for any reason give a bit of a shout-out, to see if there is anyone else sleepless and looking for company. It's been such a great thing, I thought I would start one over here too.

I have had the odd few nights where I have woken up on and off, and my kids have been having a bit of trouble some nights too, depending on what has happened during the day.

Being a carer can be lonely too, so if you are making an after-midnight cup of something hot, and wonder who else might be doing that too, maybe have a look-in here and see if anyone else is about.

Hi @Anony18 .....

I know the timing is not great, but there is a thread and lots of info on the SANE forums about that movie at the moment .....

It is depicting a condition called DID - Dissociative Identity Disorder .... and making the sufferer out to be dangerous and the condition frightening ..... I can link you to the thread if you like.

The thread is asking people to speak out against it, and supply the theatres with fact sheets about the disorder to educate people properly.

I didn't want to you find out about this later, or be adversely affected by the ficticious portrayal "based on fact" ....

Thanks @Shaz51 - bit rough at moment. Although didn't know her it is hard not to empathise and put myself in her shoes especially given how she was 1-2 years older than me.

That would be great @Faith-and-Hope. It would be an interesting read. I don't really let movies influence me and what I think of people. Even documentaries - though some interesting - could be one-sided. Am generally a person that if I am interested in understanding more would read up. I always like to look at things from various perspective or various sides/points of views/experiences. Generally don't like to form an opinion without knowing the all the facts/angles....hopefully that makes sense.

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Makes perfect sense @Anony18 .....

i will tag you from the thread.

There are people on the forum who live with DID. They will be feeling very embarrassed and hurt by this movie portrayal .... several in the forum community have begun to come forward seeking information and supporting each other. They have threads here that offer information, but from my experience they tend to be a bit timid about it. There is already a degree of stigma about it in the general community without films like this channeling it further.

It is a fascinating condition ... an amazing way the body protects itself from extreme trauma at a young age ..... and while some struggle to find synchronisation with their "alters", or amalgamate them, or some of them, or most of them back into a core identity others live quite manageably if not contentedly with their plural identity.

I'm not sure if my DID daughter has come across references to the movie "Split" yet. They don't have a TV, she doesn't spend much time on the computer, she was going to see a different movie with a friend last week but wasn't well enough to go, so she hasn't really been anywhere she might have seen ads or trailers. I'm not looking forward to when she does. Without any input from such things, she has an alter that scares her which she refers to as "The Beast". It was creepy enough for me when that designation came up in the movie trailer, and I'm really not sure how she'd handle that.

Bleaugh... Hot Chocolate thread is getting a bit heavy... better have my hot honey milk virtual nightcap and get some sleep.

Oh @Smc .... do you think you can you prep her for it ?

If she does go to the movies it might be one of the trailers that comes up on screen ... 😳😔

@Faith-and-Hope - just back from the movie. Bit of an odd ending...different to what I expected or anticipated. There are rumours that the ending to it is a teaser for his next film he is writing now.

In terms of the portrayal of DID - definitely understand all the concerns the thread had raised, especially in today's society. Definitely does not help people with MI and particularly help their confidence to assist the public to understand the facts behind it. Think as a society or community we definitely need to have a better understanding and do our research thoroughly rather than be quick to judge or take what Hollywood portrays it to be.

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

@Faith-and-Hope, yes, that's my concern. The movie she was planning on seeing is a kids' movie, but the cinema runs general trailers on the TV screens in the lobby. Would be good to prep her, but she doesn't live at home with us, so trying to find the right opportunity can be tricky. I don't want to raise it when she's already at high stress levels, and lately she's been having lots of hassle with severe but probably somatic pain. Y'know... mental pain levels get to overload, the brain has no focus point for the pain so it creates one in the body... Ironically, that's what got in the way of her getting to the movie she was going to see late last week. It's a thin line balancing act sometimes.

@Anony18 Ta for the synopsis.

Re: Hot Chocolate Anyone ?

Hi @Smc

I have tagged you from the thread that SANE forums has created re this film. @Shimmer has posted links to info pages that might help to support your daughter in regard to this film.

I get it with the somatic stuff. Our situation produced that same problem with my D3 and getting through high school. We are trying to operate without awareness or diagnosis in / for my husband ... and while we are managing it has periods and circumstances where the strain is still really high. I know the difficulties of that balance .... feeling a bit fragile about it today to be honest .... something has upset that balance for me this last 24 hrs and I'm not sure what, but suspect MIL meddling.

Its 3:30am here at the moment and I'm so grateful to have a forum family to wrap myself in when I am feeling this way and can't sleep. It settles me down.

Might need a virtual Hot Honey Milk drink myself .... 😏
