Making your bed - a little challenge

Making your bed - a little challenge

Hi guys 🙂

I came across an article about 5 reasons for making your bed every day. I've been tackling The Challenge since I first posted this on BB in Feb 2015. I've been asked to start it on here, so feel free to have a go 😉

Anyone else up to the challenge??? Here is the (edited) article ::

If you can't do the little things right, you'll never do the big things right.

1. Making your bed is a small task, but once completed, the sense of accomplishment helps you get more little things done during the day.

2. Creates an oasis to relax in when you come home. It's the one area you have control over. Pack away clothing, fluff the pillows....

3. Sets a good example for children. Easier to get them to tidy their rooms if yours is tidy.

4. Once established as a good habit, it may encourage you to start other good habits. Packing clothes away, opening curtains. This may lead you to other little tasks in other areas of the house.

5. Keeping it clean. Messy bedding can make a bedroom look untidy and unclean. With a made up bed, your bedroom will be more inviting at the end of the day.

So are you ready for your life-changing experience? When you think that making your bed takes approximately 3 minutes, it's at least worth giving it a go. Try it for a week and see if you feel like you're achieving something every morning, and whether it leads to other accomplishments - no matter how small !

@Appleblossom. Maybe the kids in the orphanage appreciated having a warm bed to sleep in and thus treated it (a possession) with care.
Or maybe they were terrified of the consequences if they didn't make their beds properly - physical punishment, verbal abuse or removal of 'privileges' - food - outings.
My 14 year old I get to strip his bed. He has to put the clean ssheets on, but I still help him with the doona cover. He just doesn't seem to get it. I'm not fussed if he tidies the bed every day - I just shut his door

Yes I know that @utopia they were probably all of the above .. and me too as I was there.

Your son has a decent role mother and mother ... good on you ... and there is only one child.. I am not worried about my son .. have detached from that issue .. but just noticing ...

as a teacher I have watched standards and expectations of young people today drop .. when my secondary teacher auntie .. could not get her son to make his bed .. my kids got loud assertions and to see his horrendous hoarding and junk ...

and thought that was supposedly normal ... and legitmate .. cos auntie "knew" about child development ... for a teen not to make a bed ..

The amount of people who now struggle to get kids to make their beds is concerning ... ... from 10 up to parents of adults with MI .. as discussed this week at Carers Vic conversations.

also issues over the meal table ..

its ok this thread probably isnt very relevant to me ...its not the area that I need to grow in.

Glad that people are doing their gardens ... gorgeous vegies in pots

Re: Making your bed - a little challenge

Thank you @Appleblossom. I liked your post. Standards have dropped. Having MI though, I need to choose my battles with my son carefully & not worry to much about the small things. It's been helping us to talk better. Me not being angry all the time. And he does manage to keep his room tidy. Just needs a prompt now and then.
I hope you get a good sleep tonigh.

Re: Making your bed - a little challenge

Thanks @utopia

Its definitely important to pick your battles if that is possible.

I dont usually sweat the small stuff .. and know heaps of parents who agree but I think that gradually there is an erosion of standards .. of familial respect ... shown through basic help around the home.

Yep I will try and go down soon. .. thanks

Re: Making your bed - a little challenge

@Appleblossom. I think there has been a decline at the school level as well.
Being that we live in a small town, it's a good lifestyle to show my son that nothing gets done in the community without volunteers and respect. Though he whinges occasionally when I sign us both up for volunteering.
Anyway. I'm off to bed. Medication kicking in
