EMDR - Has anyone done this

EMDR - Has anyone done this

Hi all, i have had 1 session with a new psychologist who i like, but she has suggested we do a number of sessions of EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming. Apart from the cost factor which i rly cant afford, im pretty nervous about the whole thing. Supposedly it desensitises u to past trauma and its affects but things like this rly scare me. As any of u that i hav bn communicating with know i am going thru an extremely difficult time right now and im not sure that digging up or re-experiencing past traumas is the best way for me to go right now, even if the idea is to reduce the traumatic nature of those events. Im scared enough of the trauma and torture im going through right now! Id rly appreciate any feedback from anyone that has had this type of thereapy. I am seein her on monday and we are supposed to be devising our treatment plan so i need to make a decision by then. I have tagged some of my forum friends in but please feel free to tag anyone else in that u think might be able to provide some feedback.

@Former-Member, that sounds super tough. Maybe you could use alarms or reminders 1/2 hour or more before you need to be somewhere to help give you time to settle before you have to do something. Just a thought.

I lost track of time last year when I was struggling last year. It pretty lost all meaning to Me.

four words are important that you said earlier "Its about me now. "

I keep expecting u all to attack me or to criticize me & u r all so supportive. Im not used to that at all.

Ur so right its about me now & my feelings.

Saw the psychologist. Hes soooooo good. I feel safe with him.

I told him how id woken early & realised i needed to write a letter to my mother. Ive been stopping myself for a while but these pretend emails like we have been friends for yrs just arent agreeing with me.

In the session i remembered writing to both parents as a young teenager. Clearly trying to express my pain then but they just hated me more for confronting them.

It made me realise that i have confronted every boyfriend, that its my nature to address something if its feeling uncomfortable.

Possibly why i have an excellent relationship with my son. I always like to clear the air so we are both at peace.

Psychologist wants me to write the letter & bring it in to him so he can focus the EMDR session on this letter.im glad its come up cause i need to address the anger & hurt.

Hes aware that my mothers reaction is going to trigger me off. My mother is so against me doing EMDR thats because shes brushed everything under the carpet & wants it to stay thrre cause its more comfortable for her. Well its about me now sleeping & feeling at peace within myself & the only way is to address this. The last time i tried to address things with my parents they said it was all in my head & that its all mental illness. Well its not im completely sane. I clearly remember lots.

Anyway im ok now. Will plan time to write this letter next wk tho.

For now i just need to accept work this arvo & to let go & enjoy the sound bowls tonight.

So glad ive finally found a good therapist that appears to work with whats present at the time. Very in tune he is.

Thanks for being there for me all.

U all said the rights things

We're definitely not going to attack you 🙂

Glad you have an excellent psychologist. It sounds like your parents were pretty naiive, but, I think its often safer and easier to try and brush it under the carpet or blame it on mental illness. I find it baffling that they would do it in that way to you.

Your definitely sane and its nice to have you here with us 🙂

I hope work goes smoothly for you. I think you have a nice job and hope you find it satisftying. Take care.

Re: EMDR - Has anyone done this

Hey @Doglover I underwent an intensive course of EMDR, but with someone I later found out was not fully qualified or experienced in the form of therapy. It was very re-traumatising and I ended up in deep psychosis requiring hospitalisation. Before considering it as a form of therapy, I would ask about the therapist's qualifications in EMDR and their experience. I would hate for you to have a similar experience to me. It was very distressing!

@Doglover

I had a similar experience. I wasnt on a strong drug went to a psychologist that mentioned EMDR then proceeded to ask me in details after a trauma. Well i became really hysterical very traumatized. She struggled to calm me down. At the end she said she was going to usa to study EMDR so would b away for a few wks. She then said she wouldnt do it on me til i was working & socializing. Well if im working & socializing then i dont need to c u i thought. I didnt want to go back to a beginner so then looked into the therapy & started to seek out the most experienced here. Was a huge wait to get in to c him but i totally agree in finding the right one to avoid being retraumatized. This guy is going really gentle to c how much i can cope with. Its very obvious the difference.

Yes to being very careful with your choice.

Psychologist is amazed with my strength willpower & resilience.

I didnt have any choice because i was without a family & friends all of my life. I had to fight every battle on my own.

As for forgiveness there will never be any from me.

My mother started this war but im going to finish it before she dies
