Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Some people with Mental Illness also have substance use and abuse problems as well. They often use, to try to limit or better cope with the symptoms of their illness. I know, from first hand expierence, how hard it can be to give up substances which i refer to as "cutches" that help us make it through the day. These substances are not always illicit. They are often prescription medications or things like alcohol, nicotine and caffeine...

What are your expierences with Chemcial Addiction and Mental Illness?

Re: Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Hi again @Tyler77 and others here. I had 30 years of chronic pot use and managed to get off it with only a couple of slip-ups over the following 2 years. It's now been 3 years but I still have new realizations about why I did it at times. Mostly I was self-medicated when undiagnosed and untreated for bipolar and cptsd. Thank goodness I no longer crave or am tempted by it. Just wanted you to know this @Tyler77 as we've been chatting elsewhere this morning. My biggest challenge yet to be faced is the tobacco.

@Tyler77 I tried them about 4 year ago and they made me completely manic. I can't use the champix either for the same reason. Dammit!

Re: Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Just a little update: I have 10 days clean from ADHD medications, and will have 11 days tomorrow.

The first week was incredibly difficult, but i made it through.

Tomorrow I will be trying to quit nicotine and caffeine, as both substances have become a crutch and I use them both way too much.

I have an entire week off, so I will be able to lounge around, sleep and take it easy..hopefully by 7 days, the worst will be over.

Thanks for all the support and encouragement!!!

Sincerely,

Tyler77

Re: Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Totally makes sense to me @GonePirate.

I used to smoke cheeba often when I was growing up, then I quit for some reason for about a year. When I tried smoking again, it was the worse thing ever. I was paranoid, delusional, even hallucinating. I remember one time i smoked before a holiday feast with my family....It was the most god awful expierence I ever had. I didnt talk, I just stared people down. I was so angry and para1noid. It was ridiculuous. Every once in awhile I'll take a hit, but even just one hit gets my heart racing and paranoia soaring. I think if it were legal or i had a perscription for it, it would be way different though.

Re: Mental Illness and Chemical Addiction...

Had a minor hiccup in my recovery and relaspsed for about 8 days....

Used my entire months script in 8 days, so now I have 22 days I have to wait in order to get a new one.

BUT, i am not gonna give up this time and call it in. Because I have gone through multiple attempts at withdrawal and i am sick of doing it over and over every month.

I am tired, I do feel exhausted and I do need multpile naps during the day. But that WILL change. Eventually.

It may take 90 days or more, but I will get to the point when I feel naturally energetic and dont need the caffeine and nicotine so much...

I'm just tired....

Tired of the roller coaster ride that comes with ADHD medication. It causes Bipolar like disorder. Cause your flying high till the meds wear off and then your mood swings dramatically to depressed and iritable...

Tomorrow I will have 7 days clean....
