Offbeat Sayings, Or The Art Of Wisdom By Trial And Error

Offbeat Sayings, Or The Art Of Wisdom By Trial And Error

Hello to all you lovely people...
For years now, I've been writing little Hallmark-moment-style wisdoms. I call them "offbeat sayings, or the art of wisdom by trial and error". Some of them are okay I guess. All of them are a lot of fun to write. I find it a totally different head space to writing poetry or short stories...
I went through a phase where I was into mysticism. I wrote some wisdoms based on that perspective, some serious, some just for fun...
Here's hoping they get a chuckle or a pondering raised eyebrow from just one other person...
Hugs, my lovelies... 🙂

@Silenus I'm glad you think we're on the same page too. I agree! Just put another poem on the writing thread which even uses some of the expressions you have and yet was written years ago 🙂

Oh wow!! @Silenus -

A common spirit indeed - we need fellow travellers who do not fear the future - or what is beyond our realm of being atm.

I have read a lot - and I have a retentive memory - and I am a writer - so this leads to me writing all sorts of wisdom literature -

I read the Greek Tradegies at University - what a thrill that was - and The Odyssey. When I first read that I was doing my HSC as a mature age student and thought - "I already know these stories, How do I know the so well?"

Dad was not a teacher but the loved teaching nevertheless - and he had told me all the stories about Ulysses - different name same person - and I told Dad what had happened when I gave him the best birthday present once - I wrote a lot of the things he had taught me on a big card

So for this discussion - what did I learn about reading Greek Tragedy and the Epics?

Well - we haven't changed much - the classics are about people - and so many of the heroes of old were caught between their gods and the Fates and Furies - and we might say a rock and a hard place but it means the same

If I ever found a fellow traveller Silenus - it might be you

Some of us blame others too much, and others blame themselves too much… who does the greater harm, I ask, as one who blames himself perhaps too much…

We are the steady peaceful turnings of the stars as they wander around our skies night and day…

The inner journey is the most important one we will ever make. Who am I? Who do I want to be? Important questions when you realise that you have the power to change the answers…

There is nothing wrong with tears. They glint in the moonlight beautifully…

Realising our own capacity to love and nurture is a great path to fulfilment and joy…

Realising our own insignificance is a great path to humility and gratitude…

Age is no guarantee of wisdom…

This sacred gift of thought, so sadly wasted by so many humans…

Buddhism embraces the middle path. There is no mutually exclusive with a philosophy such as this. Mazda, Buddha, Shiva, Yahweh, polytheisms and natural spirits… it is all the same and all good if it gives meaning and hope and love and laughter to people in all their infinite walks of life. No one is right or wrong, better or worse. The ultimate gift to the Universe for its gift of life? Simple gratitude and humility…

And I, of course, offer of all of my vital life energy, sending beams of it to the people I know, love and care for in the hope that the Universe will in some small way be influenced for the better…

I forget how good I am at wearing masks. I don’t know if I’d recognize my unmasked face in the mirror sometimes…

I am on the hard road. But I am doing it with openness and acceptance and gladness…

I am the sword being tempered by the dance of the fire’s heat and the water’s cold across my hard self. The hammerings of fate on life’s anvil shape me, and my screams of maniacal delight ring throughout the village from the smithy workshops…

I hide the worst of it from my lovely partner, but tell her later so she knows. That way, I shield her from the worst of my bipolar without becoming isolated, and keep her lovingly in the loop in the process…

I’ve tried a lifetime of flying blind. That is over. Time to fly wise… owl up…

Rapid cycling… sometimes I love you… you are a mystical teacher…

Practicality is often mistaken for insensitivity…

When you’re walking the path, don’t just look straight ahead. There’s some really exciting stuff off to the sides…

The day you realise how screwed up you are is the day that you start making of yourself a better person… I spent years in the wilderness, being falsely happy and satisfied with who I was. Then I realised it was a lie, and started my journey towards the truth… and the truth is that you should never be truly comfortable with who you are. With that comfort comes complacency, and an end to your potential for future growth…

How you enter this world and how you leave it are certain. Embrace the uncertainty in the middle…

Our life experiences teach us to avoid the pain from our past. But this sets us on an ever narrowing path. What we must do is to transcend the pain, to learn that instead of avoiding it, we must confront it. That is the only way to opening the infinite paths that realise our potential, unlocking our true future selves from the cage of our past selves…

Look far afield and deep within with the same vigour…

Never forget to take the time to smell the roses. But check for bees first…

Make hay while the sun shines, but not during bushfire season, and don’t forget to wear sunblock and a good hat…

Be elliptical…

Find something to make you laugh each and every day. If in doubt, use nitrous oxide…

Pearls are just oyster tumours. What does that say about pearls of wisdom…

Every now and then, stare at your toes – they start to look really weird after a while…

If you are ever bored, find the drill that did it and turn it off…

If you ever find yourself getting angry, imagine how silly other people think you look when you are trying to put on your best angry face…

Carpenters who made their own bed must also lie in it…

If science is really that good, where’s my flying car and my holiday trips to the moonbase…

If words don’t come easy, wouldn’t they make great lovers…

The journey is every bit as important as the destination. Stop to ask for directions once in a while, and don’t be afraid to make a few wrong turns. Watch out for gingerbread houses, though…

If pain is the realisation of life, pick at the sores every now and then…

Savour the past, live the now, dream of the future, and plot for world domination…

Never be mediocre – aim for fabulous. You score more chicks that way…

The closer you get to the centre of a turning circle, the slower it’s moving. At the very centre, it’s not moving at all. Whoa…

The greatest threat to our planet is the belief someone else will save it.
