The Beer Garden

The Beer Garden

i encourage you all to join me for some casual drinking, social lubrication and light laughter right here in the beer garden.

Oh and before anyone gets up in arms about alcohol and its dangers the main beer on tap is VB or virtual beer

beer is the third most commonly consumed drink in the world behind water and tea

why not share the worlds joy with friends

Hey @Decadian

I agree about the love for chooks. I thought it was hilarious I am not the only one who has experience chasing them around the yard with broomsticks in each arms! We are at 11 chooks at the moment, but not all of them lay anymore due to age - you won't believe this, but we have two little chooks that are just about to reach 12 years old!

Yes @SteamedToast

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the Sane Forum Family

We only had 2 chooks at once - I forget what happened to them - mostly they died after laying eggs every day for the best part of a year - they were Australorps - good layers

But one pair liked to sit on the branch of a tree that reached over the fence and someone must have grabbed them by the feet for dinner - there were feathers everywhere - and then we had a phone call - one was in the house next door - and my dd was in her early teens and had a dead-pan look on her face telling the lady that the hen might have been ours but they weren't tame and they were hard to catch - she was enjoying herself -

But I loved the sound of them clucking and when they laid and egg they went crackers - and even though only one had laid they would both squawk - and one year one laid double yokes

And one hot day one hen laid two eggs - the second one didn't have a shell - just the membrane

People loved us too - for fresh eggs - loved those fresh eggs

I have another animal story tooo - Porky - the pet pig my great grandparents put themselves out to give their 11 kids a treat for Christmas - and on Christmas Day they had their plates piled with pork but someone said "Where's Porky?" - and he was gone

I couldn't eat a pet with a name either - and well - that was my grandmother's story - but never giiven the fatted cow a name

Yes, @Decadian we had over 30 at one stage when I was on farm as a kid, used to sell the eggs, we rarely ate them, sold them ..chicken was a big treat back then, was birthdays and christmases

Re: The Beer Garden

Hahaha on no @Decadian. That's so bad! I totally agree about not eating anything with a name. I'm all for understanding where your food comes from and a respect for the life it had, but not pets (especially not helping yourself to the neighbours pets). How traumatic that must have been to find yourself/neighbour unexpectedly eating them!

I went to a fancy dinner thing a while ago at someone's farm where they cooked for you in the little guest house while you drunk lots and enjoyed beautiful food. I was surprised the next morning when we were served boris the pig who I had met the previous time. He was a much loved pig from the owners, but I will admit that he was also much loved bacon! I did feel a little conflicted eating someone's former pet though!

I just went outside to check on my chooks and sure enough my two little escape artists had found there way out of the run and into the main yard. They are about 4 weeks old now - the only two that hatched out of 8 eggs but they keep my hands full. I can't seem to figure out how they are getting out.

I think we can thank the longevity of our chooks on the fact that a lot of them are silly show breeds that are designed to be pretty rather than good layers. Any of the good layers we have (isa browns, australorps etc) tend to not last nearly as long. I think pooping out an egg a day would exhaust anyone!

Re: The Beer Garden

Hi @SteamedToast and @TAB

I love these animal stories - and fine and on topic in the Beer Garden

So I have a joke - I actually learned it in French at school

A couple went into a Restaurent in France - and they enjoyed a meal of some kind of meat and they asked the waiter what kind it was - but he had trouble understanding them

So they pointed at the meat and said "Cluck cluck?" and the waited shook his head

So they tried "Oink oink" and the waiter sighed - "Non"

Then the waiter said quietly so no one else could hear "Meow"

Aw - that bothers me
