Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

It's good you're getting it out there @BlueBay. Keep expressing what rises to the surface in terms of your feelings, but as you do, try to keep putting good stuff back in too. Look for things that bring you joy and place them in your home around you .... put good songs into your ears .... write little sayings about how you would like to be on sticky labels and leave them like little messages to yourself .... like the positive quotes thread on here.

The tide will turn .... it will take time and effort, as @Former-Member says it did for her too. Keep to your courage @BlueBay. Don't ever mistake toughness for strength .... there are many different types of strength .... and sometimes it takes strength to be softer, and more caring .... sometimes it's the weaker path to be as tough as old boots !!

I am really scared, scared of not being able to get better. I try I really do, not sure if everyone believes me but i am trying.

I'm just tired, tired of trying. I just wish I could have a hug from anyone, just someone. I think i am breaking down, i can't stop crying now, i wish i was in hospital right now. but damn psych didn't call me back, well maybe he'll call today. don't know anymore.

positive - just heard the kookaburras, I'm stil here.

Attagirl @BlueBay .... well done !! You just heard a positive sound and attached yourself to it .... you found a positive anchor .... ⚓️

Now find another one .... it is a bit like a treasure hunt, but you can find them across your day .... and they are little treasures ....

Just focus in for a moment on the lovely feeling you felt when you heard the kookaburras, even if it's just for one brief moment .... and remember that feeling .....

I have had to teach my kids to do that in their difficult times, so they have a memory of the beautiful things, especially the beauty of the natural world, so your mind doesn't stay only in a negative zone ....

You are letting small moments of joy into your heart and mind. You are letting them belong there too. Like a money box, collect those memories, and the memories of how they make you feel ...

They are liken medicine for you @BlueBay, as important as the meds you take to feel better, are the experiences that make you feel better too....

Gentle hugs. Baby steps. Joy moments.

Crisis time is here

I wish i was never here

But now I cry so much

I didn't even have any lunch

Eyes are teary

Head is weary

I just don't know anymore

Somedays i could walk out that door

But then a glimmer of hope

I just don't know how i cope

I feel that my life is a wreck

oh damn what the heck

I wish I was down the beach

Then i could be out of reach

from everyone in my life

i don't know how I'll be tonight

I will go off to bed

and rest my sore heavy head

I don't know what to do

I'm feeling so damn blue

Depression is dark and deep

I hope i can get some sleep

The tears are rolling again

I wish i was better again

As I sit here all alone

feeling the cold through my bone

I feel so sad for myself

I wish I was in better health

I need to let it all out

that way there would be no doubt

that i was abused as a child

oh i was so meek and mild

I think of you everyday

and just wish I could say

that I love you with all my heart

and wish we could have another start

My life will never be the same

cause you have ruined it again

I am not goiong back there

to be abused, no it's not fair

So if God sends us together again

I want you to know that I will not pretend

for you need to know how I feel

the hurt the pain it's all real

i just wish i could see my dad

before his memory gets so bad

and if he forgets me I'm not to blame

because of all the shame

i just want to be hugged by dad

sometimes i think i;m going mad

I just wanted to feel your arms

around me

I'm angry at her

for what she did

to treat me like a little kid

never again will she be in my life

@Faith-and-Hope

I have been crying while writing that poem, that was a hard one.

The whole week and today has been huge. Draining and mentally exhausting.

Wish i could just go to bed and hide away from the world; but i can't.

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Well, @BlueBay, as far as I can see, this last poem has really hit the nail on the head about what is driving your crisis in this moment .... no wonder you are feeling this way about it ....

Are you sharing your poetry with your therapists and GP ? It is as if poetry accesses a different part of the brain to write, and in that moment there is perhaps more clarity about the triggers or source of the pain.

You are carrying a lot of pain from the abuse, that is obvious, and that is being recognised and treated, but you are also carrying the more recent pain of having been disregarded by your mother, and what that means about your relationship with your father ..... that is what this poem is about @BlueBay .... this particular level of hurt ....

As each level is treated, you will be able to achieve a state where you can live with it and it won't hurt so much .... it will be "do-able" or "liveable" pain, and even then that can dull down with time, and as you bring new, loving, beautiful, nurturing experiences into your life to share the space .... these things will also dilute and neutralise your pain ..... that is all part of the journey, and why it is also worthwhile continuing to feed your soul on beautiful things and nurturing experiences.

Slowly, slowly, with the help of your support team, you will work your way back down through the layers of pain, taking the time, all the talking, maybe future stays in hospital .... all the bits and pieces of life involved in your healing .... and progressively neutralise and free yourself from the pain and blockages of the past.

You can't do it all at once.

Baby steps.

Today you took a few ....

you had time with your therapist .... ✅

you had a beautiful long lunch with a special friend from the past ..... ✅

and now you have written this special poem too .... ✅

Rest yourself now for a while. You need it, and you deserve it.

Big hugs .....

❤️
