Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Hi @BlueBay yes I'm okay tonight and the depression and anxiety are not too bad, thank goodness. I prefer the cold to thie heat however and love snuggling under a blanket watching tv or reading books. Hoping for you all the joy and happiness. I read your posts often but I'm usually shy to respond. I'm also supposed to be studying but tonight I'm relaxing. You take care also krisleigh

I have a very amazing, supportive, fantastic pyschotherapist. I have been seeing him for almost 5 years. our "5th year anniversary" is 21 July. I have decided to write to him

To my therapist named C:

Five years is almost here

from that day i met you as my new therapist

I was so scared to meet you

i didn't know what to expect

I remember meeting you and

I couldn't even look at your face

when i was talking to you

i would always look down

And as we progressed in therapy

I let go of my fears

of what to say and how to say

but it still brought lots of tears

you so patiently sat with me

and let me be me

you let me sit and cry

and it was good to know you were by

We talked about my childhood abuse

we talked about my parents and how horrible

they are to me

and how this has all affected me

Looking back now to the past 5 years

I can't believe how quick the time has gone

You have helped me so so much

I don;t know how to thank you

We have formed a relationship in therapy

where you know exactly how I am

you know how I feel about things

and you know how hard it is for me

But do you know that I am so happy

that you are my therapist

for I would not change anything

because you have helped me so so much

You have helped me become the person

I am today

Without your support, advice and therapy

I don't know where I would be today

At times we have laughed together

and at times we have cried together

I know that you have helped me heal

with so much of my childhood trauma

I feel that I can walk into your room

and say anything to you without being

judged or criticised; even though at

times my head says the opposite

C, you are the best therapist I have had

I hope that the next five years

of therapy brings lots of change

lots of positive happenings and I hope

I will become a much stronger and better person

I know you will be here for me

I know you will help me through this

i respect you so much as a person and therapist

I just want to say 'happy 5th therapy anniversary'

Took our son to the airport this morning for his solo overseas holiday:

This morning as we drove you to the airport

I was thinking how brave you are

and how proud I am

to be your mum

You were so excited

all packed and ready to go

you changed your money

to suit where you are going

It was getting closer to the time

for you to check in and leave

I was getting nervous and sad

'cause I knew it was time to say goodbye

I could feel myself getting emotional

I knew I didn't want you to see

But it was too late

for the tears just came

We hugged and I said

pls take care and have a good trip

you told me you will be okay

and you will call when you land

I left feeling empty

but I knew it was right

for you will have an amazing time

and have lots of memories

So now as you are in the plane

on your way on your amazing trip

I send you these wishes

of safety, health and happiness

It is my son's birthday today and he is overseas 😞

Happy Birthday my dear son

wishing you a happy day filled

with love and happiness

for this day is your day

Today you turn 20

you've grown up so much

I see you now as an adult

with so much to give

I know you are not here today with us

As you are starting your holiday

Just wanting to say I am thinking of you

and sending you a Birthday Wish

We will celebrate your birthday

with cake and food

when you come home

and hear all about your holiday too

I will make your special dinner

for when you come home

'cause I know you will miss it

'cause nothing is like home

Happy 20th Birthday my son

have a great day in Amsterdam

this is the start of the good times

of your life

Enjoy your day

Love mum xxxoooo

Empty space

empty bed

empty room

just thoughts in my head

Empty heart

empty house

empty voices

just thoughts in my head

Empty feeling

empty everything

empty life

thoughts in my head

empty lost

empty hate

empty fear

empty alone
