Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

When I found this picture, it made me think of you ..... maybe it was your walks on the beach because they're sand shoes ...... maybe it's because they are blue, and you were collecting blue things, like the butterfly memory, and the blue water, when you were on holiday ......

Do you like them ?

I know you are feeling sad, but I was wondering whether, when you are feeling a bit better, you could write a poem about where these shoes might have been, what their "life story" might be ........

I like to think about things like that when I am trying to distract myself from other thoughts.

This moment is absolutely and utterly perfect. Ponder the almost infinite number of variables that were required to create this Universe... it does not matter if you are scientist, believer, sceptic, atheist, religious... still it is the same for all of us... we wonder at this wonder of being alive... that is why I say this moment is absolutely and utterly perfect... good, bad or indifferent, it is a gift that we are able to experience life in all of its broad and varied spectrum...

Hi @Former-Member 🙂

Awesome to connect again. How be ye?

Hmmm... interesting question...when would I see using forums as being unhealthy for me?

This is complicated. These forums can be life savers. BlueBoard saved my life, without a doubt. That is such a powerful thing... all of us lost souls in the night, coming together and creating our own light...

It is a beautiful thing, these supportive informative loving communities we create...

...

But...

There's always a but (except for Love and Compassion - these powers rise above and beyond but)...

Life is about balance... in so many subtle and varied ways...

I have been swept up in learning and sharing, burning and caring, churning and daring, and all the rest that is there in these wonderful forum communities we create...

It can become either addictive or all-consuming sometimes, once we have moved to a slightly healthier state and no longer directly need it for our immediate mental health...

We want to give back to the community, and we get so absorbed in each other's lives... we become real friends here online... this is a good thing...

But... it is a double-edged sword... there is power in giving, but sometimes we give too much, and by virtue of our various mental health issues, our "too much" often does a hell of a lot of damage in our lives and the lives of our loved ones...

I once got so absorbed in communicating online with my forum buds that I froze out my lovely partner in the Really Real...

Naughty Si. That was a valuable lesson for me to learn...

It's about balance. We can't give our whole life to just one thing. There's a name for that...

It's called obsession...

I should know. I've got ObSeSsIvE cOmPuLsIvE dIsOrDeR... hahaha...

I made my peace with my lovely partner, thanked her for her valuable reminder about balance, and opened the door between us that I had inadvertently and ignorantly shut...

I love life and I love balance...

We all live and learn...

Hugs and happy vibes beaming to all... 🙂

It is so interesting to be in this current state of being...

8.5 out of 10 hypo...

Flying so high, Icarus style, and yet banking and gliding like a calm humble eagle, just chilling, riding the thermals...

This is Mindfulness perhaps... with a little pinch of Si... the view from here is magnificent...

So much bipolar chaos and extreme passion churning and burning...

...and there is so much calm and peace within me too...

Both of these states, vibrantly alive and (most importantly) not clashing. Rather, they complement each other and draw strength from each other, this loving union that I have created within myself...

They bounce off each other - the chaos and the order - the bipolar and the ObSeSsIvE cOmPuLsIvE dIsOrDeR - the alpha and the omega - and all of it creates this delightful thing called life...

Our purpose is to navigate our way through all of that, to ever grow and evolve along the way, to share our love and compassion, and to strive toward some form of wisdom that sounds sweet to our ears and our souls...

I am grateful to the thermals for lifting me so high in the sky as I fly, never wasting energy asking why... I do it, and I don't even try... it just sweeps me away as it comes by... sigh... here I fly... way beyond why...

The downdrafts come, and flying is merely throwing yourself at the ground and missing... but you don't always miss...

I am grateful too for the downs...

This moment is perfect. It is all that it was ever meant to be. Good and bad, everything under the sun, no matter how dark or light, this moment is perfect...

For it is what it is. It is "what is", and there's no denying it...

It is perfect, for there is no other...

And then we go and project ourselves onto that blank canvas... the "what is"... the Really Real...

Sending peaceful contemplative chaotic creative vibes your way... huggles... 🙂

Lol .. naughty Si ..

I do a fake imitation gentle smack on my hand.. and say I am naughty too ... it helps me deal with SH in a pro social way .. without doing harm to anyone.

I liked that you admitted you froze out your partner in the really real

I was a computer widow

We can all phantasise and hope he are in ideal land ... and need to do that a bit ...

cheers

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @Silenus,

My first impulse is to say, 'Are you okay?' You imply you are, whether high or low. It must be so different managing your bipolar without medication. I respect your choice. So long it's been since I was free of that. But I remember the high flying place many years ago. Five years of it, with hard crashes to earth in a rapid cycling way. How sane I seemed to come off back then, to myself and others too. But it was followed by long years of depression and withdrawal, interspersed with 'dark highs' that were awful for myself and those I love. I'm still 'recovering'. That's why I have to simply ask, 'Are you really okay?'

Meanwhile, in Maz land, a dream that, on waking, had me thinking everything in my life is petty and frivolous. A dream of flood, war and being worried about having no medication. What perspective can there really be in this person I am? Another question: 'do we ever recover from life?' And another, 'Am I okay?'

Perhaps the best answer for both of us is 'huggles!' Sending lots!

Oh @Faith-and-Hope I LOVE THEM !!! xxxoo

I have tears just looking at them and in my head I have a few words for my poem. I will come back on tonight and write something. The laces resemble something, the colour -

You know I don't want to go to work today, I just want to stay home and cry my heart out. Or even thought I could go to the outpatient program, I so need those coloured balls.

How are you @Faith-and-Hope

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

I am fine @BlueBay

Thank you for out for asking,

I have been resting up for the last couple of days, while I can, ahead of a busy weekend, and a busy week after that .... my D3 is in her last year of high school so we have a special dinner coming up for that. I am going interstate to submit my painting into a competition over there, and then coming back. After that we have family and friends coming over to celebrate D3 turning 18. Lots to do !! I try not to think too much about it all. I just put little bits and pieces of organisation together every other day or so, a bit like saving up money for something, and when I get closer to the time, most of it is already done, and it doesn't feel so big or difficult.

I also ask for help along the way when I need to. Having three babies under 2yo by the time my twins were born, one of them with a disability and health problems, really taught me that. Even doing my very best, I was not going to be able to manage that situation alone, especially emotionally. I had to reach out for support, and I have some very special friends who have walked along with me through all our ups and downs.

Can you imagine wearing these shoes to work today @BlueBay ? Today, and every other day you don't feel like going to work ? Maybe, like the blue butterfly from your holiday, you can have these shoes, and other special images, like a touchstone to get you through the day. When you take a break, close your eyes, imagine tying on these shoes, and going for a bpwalk up the beach, collecting shells, with your Jersey tagging along beside you.

Maybe you can choose other items that are some of the special ball colours, to add to your collection of special things. I will see what I can finspd that is purple for you .....

Big hugs @BlueBay

The blue is clear

the picture is beautiful

the laces are my life

tied up and criss crossed everywhere

the starfish is my life floating around

These shoes have walked down the bay

across the rocks and through the sands

they've taken me to lots of places

just walking, breathing and seeing

The laces are holding my heart together

keeping all my memories together

for if they are loose my heart will open

and explode and break

the blue on the shoes are the

symbol colour of the beautiful

blue butterfly i saw while away

the blue sea i could see

The little circles on the shoes

symbolise the cracks in my life

i can see all the circles resemble

people from my family all circles separate

not even one big circle to represent my family
