Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Great exploration of your thoughts and feelings, @BlueBay

The inner workings of our wishes, our desires, our fears and our hopes... often such a difficult thing to grab a hold of...

It can be like chasing mirages in mirrors...

@Mazarita - a lot of interesting and important concepts that you are exploring...

Sense of self through identification with a nation... a very important aspect for a lot of people...

My own fractured background (born in Denmark, Swiss citizenship, Australian citizenship, separation from family, the tyranny of distance, my personal experiences with rampant Australian racism directed at me for years) sees me having very tenuous ties to any nation. I do not see my identity through such lenses...

Countries... nations... ad hoc imaginary squiggles drawn and redrawn on maps... made up concepts by humans desiring to identify with a group... waving of flags... national pride... not my thing...

Us and them... that is what the concept of nations teaches us, and it is often a mean and conflict-riddled lesson... not my thing...

One human race, not divided by arbitrary borders... that is my thing...

Sorry Maz... just rambling away at the periphery here... writing about these neurons that fire...

I am sorry to hear that your feet give you so much trouble. Barefoot... that, too, is my thing... and it has brought me much improvement these past 3 years...

I hope the writer responds to your art, Maz...

I know when I self-published my books... the almost total lack of interest or support from friends and family was a minor disappointment to me...

I take solace in myself... I am pleased with my work, my art... I create art for my own sake, and for the sake of art... that keeps the beat in my heart...

Hugs... 🙂

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @Silenus,

Thanks for your generous engagement with my rambling, spontaneous, had-too-little-sleep monologue the other day. If I do continue to write these things here occasionally, they don't require any response at all really, unless you are especially moved to it. That kind of writing is mainly just for me to get out some deeper self-reflections that I would not be motivated to write without the space you have opened up here to do it.

I get where you are coming from with the one world concept and largely agree. On the other hand, the shaping influence of the cultures we arise from have a powerful impact on us and, for me, it's sometimes necessary to acknowledge and reflect on that.

I'm glad you have responded with some 'rambling away at the periphery'. That's pretty much what I was doing in writing the piece, so it's cool with me to get that kind of thing back in reply.

The writer has now given permission (yay!) but I have to wait a week and then contact the publishing entity in Germany to get permission from there too (they are too busy to respond immediately). I have calmed down about the wait though. Now that I have the writer's permission, I think the other is likely to be a formality. All this for something that is really just a simple little video to be released on the net. An interesting ride though, if emotionally bumpy. The video itself was quite hard to make too for various reasons I won't go into and I put myself through the wringer at that stage with it as well really. It's funny to think it's only 2 minutes long.

I remember reading before about your feelings when there was lack of interest and support from you friends and family on release of your self-published books. It's one of those things I find comes with the creative terrain. We are all taught from such a young age to be consumers of culture that it's often hard for those closest to us to support anything that doesn't immediately meet their highly developed tastes. It's a tough field and I agree it involves a high level of self sufficiency in the satisfaction of doing it to continue with it at all.

Diggin' the beat of your heart!

Hugs back atcha! 🙂

THE ROSE (poem)
It's only a tiny rosebud,
a flower of God's design
But I can't unfold the petals,
with these clumsy hands of mine.
The secret of unfolding flowers,
is not known to such as I
The flower God opens so sweetly
in my hands would fade and die.
If I cannot unfold a rosebud
this flower of God's design,
Then how can I think I have wisdom
to unfold this life of mine?
So I'll trust in Him for His leading
each moment of every day,
And I'll look to Him for His guidance
each step of the pilgrim way.
For the pathway that lies before me
my Heavenly Father knows
I'll trust Him to unfold the moments
just as He unfolds the rose🌷

The world could be ending,
But who cares?

There's always hope,
A small light at the end.

Don't be passive,
Jump off the train,
Before it crashes.

Let live!

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi @PeppiPatty, good to hear from you. So sorry you are struggling with illness. I hope that gets better for you very soon. I understand your paranoia about the meds. I often worry about taking too much too as they are known to keep us in bed too much. On the other hand, I guess we remember what things were like before them. In my case it keeps me taking them and trying to access my own will to move forward regardless of the side effects. With how busy you have been lately, you seem to be acting on that will very much. I'm pretty much always making videos, except for occasional breaks when things aren't working out so well with particular projects. Media has been part of my life for 30 years and I may still be doing it when I'm 80! Just imagine an 80 year old into electronic music and weird videos and that might be me, lol. Hugs your way, dear friend.

it's hard to get a grip on myself

it's hard to grip anything at the moment

falling again

i do't know what i am even doing on here

i like to chat to others

to feel loved supported and cared

this anger is building up

i think the dog needs a walk

but i can't even be bothered

wish i could just run away

oh that's whay i say all the time

run away, disappear, go away

that's all i can say

damn

the lid of my emotions is going to pop

and i can't explain what i will do

destruction is one

self harm is another

oh i don't even think i can do that

sorry this is not making any sense at all. it's not even a poem, it's just dumb writing
