Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Hey folks, found a quirky little verse to share. I need to write more, got a lot inside that's trying to get out, so I think I might give it a red hot crack over the weekend. Hope you all have a safe and warm weekend.

Big hugs xx

Windows

My brain is still rhyming,

My words ever climbing,

Through windows & doorways I see,

I’d almost forgotten,

The wisdom begotten,

From verse manifesting in me.

I cannot stop framing,

These thoughts still remaining,

Do come with a warning or two,

Don’t slip down the hole,

It will bury your soul,

And boil you in rabbit foot stew.

But holes can be brimming,

With consummate winning,

Depending on which way you dive,

A choice for the making,

With brilliant partaking,

Will see that you actually thrive.

So trust in the vision,

Your soul has been given,

And shuffle towards better light,

A window revealing,

The future you’re stealing,

Will summon your courage & might.

And please never waver,

Be bold with your favour,

It may be a gamble of chance,

But luck rolls the dice,

Between fire and ice,

Don’t ever relinquish the dance.

My brain is still rhyming,

My words ever climbing,

I guess that I finally see,

The windows I found,

Where the doorways abound,

Are a chance to be finally free.

Hi @bipolarbunny

It’s so lovely to hear from you

It’s such an honour to be invited into people’s lives and I’m incredibly moved that you shared such a deeply personal and painful experience with me

After reading this part of your story, I can really appreciate why you feel ‘broken’ and my heart goes out to you

The way in which you described some of your earliest memories was incredibly moving and I’m just so sorry that the people who were meant to love, care and protect you, hurt you in the most unimaginable ways.

This is absolutely heartbreaking

Please know that I’m thinking of you and sending you some very gentle hugs at such a difficult time

Take care,

ShiningStar

Re: Writing As A Form Of Therapy

@ShiningStar Thank you so much my friend. Yes it is very difficult at times especially when at the moment I still have to have contact with my toxic family. I live for the day I'll finally be free of them and can go permanently no contact. xx

Stuck

I’m stuck between worlds,

And the line that divides,

Is paved with mistrust,

Where my chivalry hides,

Is anyone’s guess,

As the rabbit hole slides,

I’m an ace between worlds,

And the joker presides.

I’m stuck in the middle,

Of pleasure and pain,

Emotions are writhing,

Perception takes aim,

Where chaos and calm,

Grant you nothing but blame,

I’m a pawn on the board,

Being screwed by the game.

I’m stuck between wars,

Do I hasten to fight,

Have my deeds tempted fate,

And propelled me to flight,

Am I caught in a fog,

Of some troublesome plight,

Tormented by shadows,

And driven by fright.

I’m stuck by reality,

Walls closing fast,

Too damaged to conquer,

Too broken to last,

Forever in turmoil,

My mind all aghast,

Frustrated by anger,

Still trapped in the past.

I’m stuck between truth,

And a narcissist’s guise,

My freedom does lurch,

Between bullshit and lies,

Their nonsense abounds,

With a deluge of spies,

I may suffer the lows,

But I long for the highs.

I’m stuck by insanity,

Madness has won,

For lack of a future,

Normalities spun,

A web of deception,

That pulls me undone,

Stability cursing,

An unending pun.

I’m stuck between worlds,

And there is no escape,

Just a mindful incursion,

That pushes debate,

Can my future show promise,

Will torment abate,

I’m stuck between worlds,

But I make my own fate.
