Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Another dawn...

Another day in the mind of myself. Is about as precarious. As a day spent walking the depths of a deep and dark jungle. With many ferocious creatures and critters all around. It's probably not the best comparison. But I like the way it sounds.

Sometimes. I forget the value and splendor. Of the world that is around me. I forget that it is... a peaceful and tranquil place. I forget that the picture has been put on the wall. Because I willed it. Too be that way.

I get frustrated with the things that are oppressing and controlling me. And go into a political debate. With me, myself and I. And I enjoy it. Because at least one prospective of myself. Comes out victorious. And right.

Such uncertain, such unstable and such unsecured thoughts. About the destiny of my life. Plague my mind. And give me a sense of restlessness and drive. Too make my life righteous. In the sight of all the members of societies eyes.

The cruelty of what my mind has done to me. Took place because of the outside influences of humanity. Now the tables have turned. I seek too reverse the effects. Of knowing... The book I've written... Is as powerful as a little kitten...

The tears fall freely

giving myself away

for the mask has bee removed

from my tears of dismay

how does one overcome

so much wrong in their life

for the darkness surrounds me

all day and all night

so much to say

yet only silence comes out

I can't find the words

so only silence comes out

the time has come

to end my pain

for no one can live

when there is nothing to gain

the darkness creeps in

right into my soul

for the light has gone

forever from my soul

Life used to be, so full of joy

Laughter and smiles, not a worry in the world

Then darkness set in, nightmares and flashbacks

For my life was turned around, in the worst kind of way

How can one be betrayed, by the people we trust

How can one forget, all the horrors that we dealt

For happiness has gone, my life is no more

For all I see, it now despair

Fighting my mind, is just too damm hard

For all the is left, is the scars of my past

3am

I met a famous actor

in my dream tonight

he was in the act

of something criminal.

I tried to help him

get away

for his presence

was a danger.

And yet I also

wanted him

to be in my

dream play.

He hadn't answered yes

or no

when I awoke

just now.

Instead I heard

my voice out loud

explaining

and beseeching.

We stood behind

a wall of lockers

hiding from

the law.

I don't know what

this poem means,

just telling what

I saw.

It was, @outlander! Three dreams in one night when I woke up speaking out loud! Some weird side effect of the new med I'm on, I think. I do dream of famous people every now and then though. And I have been known to sleep talk as well in the past. Just not so often in one night! It would be funny if I wasn't a bit worried about such weird side effects. It will probably pass though as the new med settles more into my system. These psych meds are strong stuff, clearly.
