Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

I posted this in my den then thought that it was better suited here

For so long I have been a scared little child
I felt useless as people did with me as they pleased
Even as I got older the fear always stayed
I began to feel life would always be this way
Then I out of the blue the fear was gone and all I felt was anger
Anger towards all those who hurt me
Anger towards those who let it happen
Anger towards those who wouldn't listen
Anger towards those who didn't rescue me
But most of all angry with myself for being scared instead of strong
Eventually the anger faded and I even began to forgive
But not all or everyone
And especially not myself
I try real hard to but all I think is
If I had been strong instead of weak
And brave instead of scared
Maybe they would not have hurt me so bad
Now I feel like I live in a world of pretend
Where those who hurt me think they are family
Those who let it happen are oblivious to my pain
Those who didn't listen still don't hear my cries
And those who didn't rescue me think they are heroes
And I put on a mask and pretend that I am normal

restless dark

these charcoal meditations

as if

sleep is an enemy

friends have abandoned

or we just

can't find each other.

perception is a liar

all evidence points

in other directions.

but even that is

a story we tell

once upon a time

in the wild wild

of rapturous illusion

leading to the stark

naked void of confusion.

forever tending
to details fearing
failure only
to surprise
with gifts.

foolish to gamble
a lifetime
up in smoke
the lost campfire
sifting ashes.

charcoal is good for
teeth we've been told
make sure to floss
avoid holes and
fluoride objections.

take care where
you wander there
is danger even if
all roads lead to that
same place.

The void of desperation

One man can only try too make a bad situation right as long as there is hope.

I've tried everyday of my life... And I've come to a point... Where I have to accept this void of desperation I'm stuck in...

A void of desperation which makes me... Want to find a happy place... Where I can be at ease and contented...

I've tried my whole life... I've tried to make my life right... But still I fall short of the glorious dreams... I once held at night...

Alone is an understatement when you're trapped in a void if desperation... Too make things right... And to find a happy place...

I've tried my whole life... And I think I need to go too the park bench bye the sea side... And bury my dreams beneath the ocean...

Perhaps the only happy place... I will ever know... Will be in my dreams... Perhaps I need to let go... Of what could of been...

Lost and lonely... In the void of desperation... I watch the world around me... Consume my sanity...

I've tried my whole life... Too find a happy place... I've tried my whole life... Too make things right... But still I suffer from insanity...

The wild storm that awoke me... Has passed... And the sunrise is near... A glimmer of hope... Lives on...

For the moment... The void of desperation has gone... And I've found myself... In the abyss... Of nothingness... Where I live...

It is time to be still... It Is time to believe... In a better day... The void of desperation... Will be back again...

Shame

Very very slowly
I start to understand
Shame is my life
Shame from the past

I see shame in the eye
Cannot hide anymore
Shame is drowning me
Shame is killing me

Ashamed to say
I was abused
I let it happen
I did not stop it

I hear
It’s not my fault
It’s a crime
I’m not to blame

But the shame
The shame
Stays with me
Wears me down

whenever I go

from up to down I

lose heart and

cynicism becomes me.

friendship becomes a

temporary structure

to house us in

wavery walls of mirage.

trying hard to see

the bright side I

scramble crab-like

to the grave.
