Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Writing As A Form Of Therapy

Hi all,

I have found throughout the course of my life that writing has been a constant companion to me. It has provided me with a way to vent my frustrations, to grapple with the eternal verities of life that confound and delight me, to explore ideas and concepts, and to try to put into words the often chaotic moods and thoughts that result from having a mind that's a little bit odd...

I have written lots of poems, especially in the last 3 or 4 years, dealing with depression and bipolar. They help me to process and understand some of the things that are happening in this twisted little noodle of mine. As such, writing has become one of my main forms of therapy.

One of the best things that I find about writing is that it can act as a kind of mood diary. I can read things that I had previously written, and it will quite often map out where I was at during the time of writing. The words I spread across the page act as signposts of my progress, too. As my self knowledge increases and my life journey progresses, I find that it affects how I write and what I write...

Often, we do not see the thousands of tiny little changes to our selves that our life experiences cause over the years. It can be very helpful to re-read old writings, in order to see how far we have come, what we have improved, where we have fallen back into old harmful habits, and the things that we have learned.

The language that we use in our writings and in our thoughts and in our speech is very important. It can reveal a lot about our selves, our states of mind, and our moods...

That language, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe that we attract certain kinds of people around us, and create (or at least influence) life situations based on our choice of language. It helps define who we are as a person.

Negative thinking, self-deprecation, self-hatred, these sorts of dangerous life traps are often revealed in our choice of words. So too are the positive things. It all starts with a glass. How we describe the glass and the quantity and quality of its contents, that's where language comes into it, and it can shape our very lives and the lives of those around us.

Writing... it is my solace and my main tool of self-analysis. It is my favourite form of therapy...

Thank you, @frog 🙂

My words help me to heal and cope... they may not always be right, but they are right for me... hahaha...

One of my greatest hopes is that others find some worth in my words... life is a journey after all, and it is always a delight to see fellow travellers sharing the path...

yes @Silenus

we must learn to forgive and love ourselves....

the growing self awareness...patience..compassion follows..

then we can project calm..inner strength...inner peace...

we can help ourselves and others to find a sense of belonging ...

love your writing ...

This poem concerning my father comes from a powerful realisation that my father's traumatic childhood forced him to be too strong too young.

He came to hate weakness, and hated it when he saw it abundantly in me. My genetically disadvantaged body gave me hypermobility and bipolar, and every time I was sick and broken, my father made it feel like it was my fault.

A sad misunderstanding...

The title of the poem refers to a poem we would recite in Swiss German... the rough translation is "Good night, sleep well, and dream sweetly of sour wood apples."

My father hated weakness,
And therefore he hated me;
The apple is not strong enough
To fall far from the tree.

hello @Silenus

your childhood appears to be on a parallel of that of my older son...

father son relationship between the two was more about intense love hate...

they could not communicate in any shape or form...yet could not be apart from one another for too long...

The contrast with my son's relationship with myself, his mum was extreme....I have and never will give up or stop loving my son...

I hope that you have a strong relationship with your mum...

hello @NameUnknown

thank you for your response...

a good idea from your psych...

she does not need to see it...

I had been told the same re unresolved issues in the past with my family...

my effort read nothing like yours..

there are so many feelings that come through when I read your words...you would have many feelings..

it reminded me of a poem that I wrote to my first psychiatrist during my first hospital stay.... whilst he was away overseas for a long period......the style of questioning after phrasing each feeling...

I hope that you keep on expressing yourself through writing...painting...drawing...creativity...

Hi @Former-Member 🙂

Alas my mother was an alcoholic and a pack-a-day smoker. I was born a month premature, an addict to both substances of abuse...

We loved each other greatly, but the distance involved when a person loves a substance more than family is insurmountable, continually reinforced time and again by life experiences, disappointments, and a growing body of hurt that threatens to sweep future love away...

My mother passed in 2014 from pulmonary fibrosis, and due to my own physical health issues at the time I only made it to the hospital after she was beyond words and consciousness...

Endless hours of bedside hand holding ensued... the worst time of my life, for my harsh reality countenances no gods or souls or eternal life...

Four years on, and I feel the grief as freshly as ever... I never got to say goodbye...

I don't even remember the last conversation I had with her... that is almost the thing that makes me feel worst of all...
