New to bipolar

New to bipolar

Hello,

I'm in my 40s and have recently been diagnosed with bipolar depression. I have not been well for about a year now. I'm not sure what to make of this label and would just like to connect to people who live with bipolar and can share their experiences.

How did you learn about your illness, how did you accept the diagnosis and what has helped you along the way?

I just want my life back, I have always been a positive person with lots of energy. Now I'm just empty.

Re: New to bipolar

Struggling tonight

I've started my mood chart a bit ago now and my changing moods are not much fun. I've started going to bed really early and I'm getting up later and later, I feel like I just don't want to deal with the world out there or rather my head. Then I'm flying high for an hour or two only to crash again. Gentle gentle I try to get my shit back together & take some meds and eventually might get another high only to crash again. Will I just learn how to dance with my ever changing moods? At the moment I feel out of tune and as if I always step in the wrong direction. I never had rythmn and grace, perhaps I should just continue as the elephant in the porecellain shop...

Hey @Former-Member feeling this way sucks. My advice here is that setting a routine really helps. Have a fixed sleep schedule. If you wake up tired well tough get up and start your day. I've found sleeping in just makes it worse. Things generally balance out in a day or so.

Sorry if I'm a bit short tonight. I'm really busy with work (election campaign work) but I saw this pop up in my electronic mail* and I might be able to add something useful.

Yes, apparently there is a blanket ban on the more common name for this type of communication.

Re: New to bipolar

Hey @Former-Member

I hope you are feeling better today. I think keeping a regular routine no matter what is the way to go. Also If you have a psychiatrist, work with him or her to keep you going. My psychiatrist, keeps me hypomanic almost year round, with a mild antidepressant. I think its betterr to be on the manic side of things than the depressive. Its all about communication with your doctors and getting the most out of treatment. You shouldn thave to live a life where you just want to sleep the world away. I have been there and its not fun.

So I'd suggest sticking to a routine, eating healthy, talk with your doctor and get some light exercise in almost everyday.

Re: New to bipolar

Ahoy @Former-Member i also have bipolar and am really struggling right now

its true what you said about waves

we can either be swept up and dumped in them

or learn to surf

sadly as i write this i am being swept away getting dumped over and over

i dunno or maybe a shark has my board in its jaws

needa do the fanning and punch the shark in the head

ive been trying for about an hour to write how i feel

nothing is working

just wanted to say you are definitely not alone

as others have said routine usually helps but sometimes down time is unavoidable

i was recently up for about 3 months not high up but happy up

then towards the end i identified the familiar symptons of a full on mania

i take and anti depressant and an anti psychotic which usually keeps from either extreme

but it didnt work this time

and after soaring so high i crashed as i have done in the past

the high for me is always followed by a crushing low

so here i sit two weeks into a mother of a low

and it sucks

Re: New to bipolar

Good morning @mrkotter and @Tyler77

Thanks for your advise. I am trying to get a routine going, I find it difficult to find the balance - but I guess that will be the same for everyone.
What is the right amount of sleep. For me it used to be less than 7hrs, never slept during the day, as soon as there was a spec of sunlight I would be out and about. Now I sleep between 8 and 12 hours. And I can have a 2 hour nap no problem. I try not to nap on the weekend if I had OK energy levels during the week, but last weekend I spent like 14-16 hours in bed - and it did make me feel better... Hmmm perhaps I should force myself to less than 7 hrs and see if that brings my energy level back up?

How do you deal with your daily routine? What are your absolute corner stones, the non negotiable ones? @mrkotter if you work with campaigns you would know about completely irregular days and travel - how do you deal with that?

Re: New to bipolar

Hi @GonePirate

How are you? I'm still trying to find that shark that's got my surfboard. And then I'm wondering what's next. If I ever get the opportunity to learn surfing, do I want to body surf, wave surf, kite surf, wind surf... Or just lay on my back on my surfboard watching the clouds go by.

I've been swept so far in the sea and along the shores that I don't even know where I am anymore.

Knowing i am going back in that deep deep deep BLACK HOLE!

I am unable to hold a job down.

I feel guilty i dont work.

I ummm & ahhh about doing things.

I Dont seam to be able to stick to things i start.

Saying i would do things then pull out at the last minute.

Re: New to bipolar

Hi @1731TC. I read that you can feel it when it's coming and you are going to the big black hole. I wonder if any of your professional psych team or yourself - have been able to stop it coming once you feel it. Or maybe there is a sign before the feeling - that you may start noticing & they may be a point that you can stop the dark hole from coming.
I don't mean to presume, but I do wonder if it's possible to stop the arrival. Now that would be great!

Re: New to bipolar

Hi Im new to this forum but am amazed at the similarities in what people are experiencing. I am in my 50s but was originally diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder 20 years ago. I travelled along with minimal support from anyone with expertise until 2 years ago when I suffered severe burnout (from work) and was in a very bad state. After a couple of medication changes (antidepressants) I thought I was finally improving but last week was diagnosed with Bipolar II. I honestly thought my 'highs' were just good mood although my family had said they were worried that my behaviour was OTT. The main concern though is the sudden drops in mood leaving me profoundly low despite taking 2 different antidepressants. Now the plan is to go into hospital to start a mood stabiliser - Im very sensitive to medications and this is the safest option. Im concerned about possible side effects but sort of excited that my mood might actually become more stable. I have found it very difficult going from a highly functioning person to one who life is soooo basic!
