Decluttering and home maintenance

Decluttering and home maintenance

When MI crisis happens, keeping house can take low priority. But having a messy house can further dent what is often an already low self esteem. Build up of grime follows and rodents have a field day in inaccessible places.

Getting that 2 minute job done (that has been annoying you for years) can lift ones spirit.

I have slowly been decluttering and tidying up our house. The progress made thus far has been achieved primarily by persistently dealing with one item a day.

What has often kept me going has been the encouragement from others @Faith-and-Hope, @Smc @Determined @Shaz51

This tip passed on to me today. Hang all your clothes in the wardrobe with the hanger back to front. As you wear them, return them with the hanger the right way round. In 6-12 months review all items that remain on back to front hangers with a view to donating/selling them.

@Former-Member how did you get on today?

Re: Decluttering and home maintenance

Yes flat on back is definitely me, after a long day @Former-Member

I don't ever want to have to move again (either) @Determined

I had somewhere between 20 & 40 boxes packed, when moving last time (18 years ago) @Former-Member

You're almost there (almost done) EOR.....

I just had my lovely Bouganvillea pruned well-away from my side fence today.

That's so that my aggro neighbour cannot find another reason to scream at me - although she may decide to scream at me anyway.

She has been screaming & going bonkers for the past 18 years, ever since I moved here.

So when aggression & inappropriate behaviour gets you what you want, ie I do her bidding (out of fear) - then I guess that person will never change.

It's hard to get Bouganvilleas established here, because it's too hot & dry (no rain) in the Summer months. I've had several die.

Once established they do very well, & put on quite a show - it's actually coloured leaves, not flowers.

This Boug is a lovely White.

I have a Flame-Orange Bouganvillea out the front (very small) - it has not grown much in 15 years.

@Former-Member, yeah, that's me thanks 👍 once removalist left... I crashed... On the floor with pillow, in tears, totally zonked after working through the night. In so much pain... so traumatic the tears well up... a lot. And I'm alone, always battle alone, alone is not compatible with life... or so it feels.

@Adge, gotta love bougainvillea - they sure do put on a show. Don't see Orange ones much. I love the rich crimson pink. Living near broken Hill in the 80's there was a deep pink boug growing up through a Jacaranada tree, all to the top, and they were both in bloom... beautiful colour combo in the sunlight with blue sky behind. But hard to keep under control in suburbia gardens. Sorry you got such shitty neighbours. Anonymously drop an airfresh airwick in their letterbox maybe, cause they stink 🤣lol
Thanks for saying "almost there" - touched my heart.

Re: Decluttering and home maintenance

Thanks guys for 'liking' my suffering :face_with_rolling_eyes:lol Haven't had a chance to catch up on you all but appreciate having somewhere to blurb my progress. Moving is the absolute best time to declutter. Its been really hard to get moving again since removalist has taken all the major stuff. I've just dragged all the last of the backyard surplus out to the footpath for pickup - its amazing how quickly it disappears. Salvo Charity truck came and took the heavy recliner, 6'timber table, coffee table, old washing machine, and big heavy mirror. Wouldn't take 4 drawer file cabinet so I took the drawers out and rolled it into footpath too. So if it doesn't go soon, I'll take it up to the tip shop. Can't believe I gather all this stuff and then just give it away... hope I can slow down this habit. Removalist truck arrived in one piece, my very precious, highly valued friend up there opened up for them and checked it was left all locked up. I've been so anxious something is gonna be forgotten or stolen or simply not go right. Not use to trusting people but sometimes you just have to. I've got a lot of unused boxes and packing stuff to toss and sift through final stuff to see what will and will not fit in the car.
On a lighter note, the fridge hwsvgon ahead of me 🤔 but it's so cold here that the milk and cheese keep fine on the stool outside the back door 😊

Re: Decluttering and home maintenance

Slow but steady here @Former-Member trying to ensure I achieve at least one thing a day. We have plenty of jobs to be done. Today I got a small pack of bulbs planted and cooked a large batch of spaghetti sauce (some for tea + 5 individual serves for the freezer) whilst Mr D finished digging holes for espalier/trellis poles in our kitchen garden.

One thing a day is 360 jobs in the home a year @Former-Member ,👍 Sounds calm and at peace there ,💙🙏

Perhaps more about having a system in place that works for us @Former-Member.
