Not coping with severe depression

Not coping with severe depression

Hello to all the beautiful people who contribute on these forums. I am a male aged 45 who has been battling with depression for several years. I have attempted suicide three times in the past and hospitalised on one occasion. My depression has been manageable with medication until a few months ago when the only close friend I had in my life passed away. I'm just not coping with being single, lonely and dealing with the death of my dear friend. I have a shy personality which makes it virtually impossible to meet females and build friendships. I'm also low on confidence and self esteem and believe I'm not good enough to be considered for a relationship. I have been on my own for my entire life and Don't know how much longer I can last being on my own and lonely. It's the first time I have shared my personal pain and suffering with anyone as I would find it too embarrassing and humiliating discussing it with a psychologist in person.

In the past, I would always have said I was a winter person. However, this winter has seemed long and the house is difficult to heat. The winds here, because it is an island, are often quite strong and the weather changes so very quickly.

How about you? I'm guessing your choose for Greece as your favourite place to live may indicate a love of warm seas and even warmer air?

You are quite right in saying my preference is summer. I don't mind winter and cooler weather though as long as it isn't too extreme. I completely understand why you were happy to see the back of winter this year after hearing what you experienced.

So kind @Leventia

Is your cultural background Greek? Are you the "strapping lad" of your name?

Absolutely I do have a greek background but consider myself an Aussie as I was born here. As much as I enjoyed visiting Greece for my holiday I was extremely happy to return home. I can speak greek but not fluently which makes communicating slightly frustrating, lol

Many years ago i worked in an admin capacity with a group that worked with older Italians. It seems there are many forms of Italian. Is it the same with Greek?

@Jayneinpain that's a really good question which made me think. To the best of my knowledge there are 3 types but stand correction. Ancient Greek, Cypriot Greek and standard Greek.

Have you thought of any new questions for today? I thought of many through the night but they all seem to have disappeared for now.

Awww @Jayneinpain that happens to me quite often. My short term memory is a little unreliable at times. I would like to know if you have any pet's? Are you a cat or dog person? Also what would you say is your dream job?

I had a cat before my move here but rehomed her with a friend. I'm told she is very happy. I am, at heart, very definitely a dog person. I would very much like to get another dog and hope to do so in the next six months or so. I have also had birds, goldfish and chooks in the past. If i had the space, I would have chooks again. What about you?

Teaching people with intellectual and physical disabilities is my favourite work. It can be very demanding but the rewards as truly amazing. Plus, in my experience, they are the most appreciative, forgiving and supportive students. I also enjoy working with older people. My eldest student, so far, was 86 and she was fabulous. I worked for a year as a live-in carer for people with dementia. That was challenging but also rewarding with many moments of shared humour. How about you?

Very nice, you have had a variety of pets in the past. I'm more a cat person but have had a dog before. I currently have a 7 year old cat who is napping away on my bed. My neighbour from my previous home had a few chooks and would constantly bring me fresh eggs. Working with people who have disabilities does sound very rewarding and challenging. You sound really passionate when you discuss it.I personally think you should be very proud of yourself. My dream job as a youngster was to join the police force which never eventuated unfortunately. I do love what I'm currently doing though as it challenges my mind.
