Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

hello @Adge

I logged on and thought I could be incognito....

Then I read your words...

Adge...

Yes ...

Adge..

You are so very very strong to be where you are today....no doubt...no question...

I do understand and hear what you are saying nonetheless....

It does all become too much...

You think that you have had far more to endure than you should and then the next meteorite hits (I call them meterorite storms)

so very different for everyone..

You my dear friend have been illtreated by your employer to the degree that it borders on so many cases of occupational health...respect and compassion for an employee...

I can go on and on..

I have followed your journey..

You are better off without this job health wise....seriously...

Yes you need an income but not from this company which has zero concern..respect for employees..

Do not allow them also to take away your self respect...

You have far more to offer than they will ever recognise...They are incapable of that...They do not deserve your input...

Your friends on here support you because we all are aware of this...

@Adge talk to us...I pop on here from time to time ....

there are others here who are on the forums more often who will listen to you as will I ...

I will respond when I can ...within the limits of my rehabilitation and sagas...

You are still in my thoughts ....

Horticulture...what an achievement...

A wealth of knowledge...

What can you teach me...

I managed to grow some baby tomatoes which were so succulent and sweet from one plant....How good is that considering??

Big hug Adge... 💜

Leaving you caring thoughts....

hoping that you are able to feel some peace in the middle of your storm..

no need to respond unless wishing to...

rest...remember to monitor your breathing every now and then...

for me it is more...remember to breathe when life is all too much...

I will leave you some images of nature...this earth's gift to share...

Hi @Adge, @Sophia1,

Adge, sending some more thoughts for you today. I often feel relieved on Boxing Day, that the craziness of xmas is over. Then new year comes along, with fresh-start feelings after an old year has become heavy with the weight of our experiences. Wishing you fresh perspectives on difficult times in the near future.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hello @Adge hope today has been a little better.

I was wondering, workwise, whether you might contact Fair Work, or if you're in the Union enlist their help. Without knowing the details, I might be out of line on this; just thoughts so feel free to swat them away!

Wishing you peace among the turmoil.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

I apologise - this may be very triggering.

This is my 1st chance (feeling almost well enough) - to explain or say why the past 3 weeks have been so rough.

I was sent 3 times to hospital in an ambulance (each as fairly serious).

On the 26th/12/18 (Wednesday) - I made my 1st ever serious attempt at S.

I would have succeeded, unless the ambulance paramedics & police has managed to get me out of the house to resuscitate me.

There were complex reasons & intolerable pressure put on me - that lead to that attempt.

I cannot say why right now, but virtually no one would have been able to withstand that much pressure (continuous malicious mind games).

It is solely due to the efforts of those paramedics & police that I am still alive.
