Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Former-Member This is an old post - it explains how medical neglect by Drs (doing no scans or tests) ended with me in hospital - the direct cause of my 1st emergency bowel surgery.

I have no current GP, since mine left (months ago) - will need to find one.

I have lived for several decades with serious physical illnesses (or conditions) -

Scoliosis, causing severe back pain

Sleep Apnea (diagnosed 11 years ago), causing debilitating daily fatigue - treatment & stimulant medication has moderately improved my functioning. Not to anywhere near a "normal" level, for someone without a Sleep Disorder (or a fatigue condition).

A bowel obstruction (tumor), with 3 major bowel surgeries (2 emergencies) - from which my body has never fully recovered.

My digestive system (which was disconnected for 6 months), has not worked effectively for the past 3 years - since my bowels were re-connected (stoma reversal surgery).

I also have Complex PTSD, from more than 2 decades of trauma.

Because PTSD is supposedly an "anxiety disorder" (so-called) - medical professionals have on several occasions attempted to "explain away" my physical symptoms as being "just anxiety".

This has stopped me from accessing adequate medical care, on several occasions.

The "just anxiety" was later found to be a life-threatening bowel obstruction (tumor) - which required immediate surgery. Then a 2nd emergency surgery, 3 days later (when the 1st went disastrously wrong). Then a 3rd bowel surgery, 6 months later to reverse the damage (& clean up the mess).

I now have 2 serious hernias, as a result of the bowel surgeries - wound split, extensive wide scarring, & hernias in the middle.

Have others experienced their physical illnesses (or medical emergencies) not being taken seriously - because of having a mental illness diagnosis?

How did you overcome these obstacles to receiving medical care (if you could)?

Self-care is difficult, when my food does not digest adequately - despite Probiotics & Gastrostop (when necessary).

I must run to the toilet with great urgency (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - which is a cause of stress in itself, & makes working difficult.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hey @Shaz51 I'm sorry you had to go on DSP.

At least it gives you some secure income.

I was told years ago that due to my health conditions - I'm more eligible for DSP than many people who were receiving it.

Yet due to the nightmarish Application Process & much narrower/ tighter eligibility criteria - I've never Applied for DSP.

I'm not yet recovered from Burning out in January this year.

Then started this new job too soon, without a recovery break.

Otherwise hopefully it will work out okay.

I'm Casual (all employees are casual) with no minimum weekly working hours - Very low hours just 8 hours per week so far.

Last week they gave me No hours, no work at all.

I hope you are okay so far dealing with your health conditions.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

I'm not sure who to Tag into this Thread.

Anyway, I've been sitting with this all week, as I've had no- one in person to talk about it with.

I did receive some very affirming responses, when I wrote about this on the Best Friends Thread (briefly).

On Tuesday I received an Autism Assessment.

Which my Psychologist suggested I do.

It said that my responses are consistent with Autism.

I had no idea, had never considered the possibility.

It might have been useful when I was young, in order to receive appropriate help.

Yet at the age of 55, I still don’t know what to do with such a Diagnosis.

So, 3 days later I’m still in some shock over that.

My Psychologist simply said it was up to me what I choose to do with it.

I have no idea what to do with supposedly being Autistic - So I'm gona ask my Psychologist for suggestions, when I next see her.

Because otherwise I feel I've just been left with shock/ surprise information, that leaves me in a No-Win situation.

Hello 😊 @Adge

Trying to find one to say hi 👋

And wondering how everything is going for you and your birds

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

Hi @Shaz51 My Birds are a bit reduced in numbers, but they are still going well thanks.

This past year has been a rather tough & somewhat momentous year, for me.

Tackled the DSP Application process & was successful.

Then tackled the NDIS Application process & was successful - After having been knocked back (refused) by NDIS, 4 years before that.

I'm finding adjusting to the NDIS very stressful - Trying to work out how to make it work for me, or how their system works.

I've only just got Support Workers (under the NDIS) organised, in the past few weeks.

So far they seem very good - Yet I still have to work out how to make these support hours (with Support Workers) effective for me.

I'm finding it hard to know what to ask them to help me with.

Especially as these people (Support Workers) are new to me, so I am not yet that comfortable with working with them.

How have you been @Shaz51 ? Do you still have low Kidney function? Might you need a kidney transplant? That sounds very tough for you.

I still think of people on Forums, even though I don't manage to write/ post very often.

I try to Support people's Posts, but the Support Button doesn't work.

Re: Self-Care with major Physical illnesses

hello @Adge

yes, I am on DSP but have not tried with NDIS yet, they keep sending me papers and emails, but I don't think I really need them yet

My Birds are a bit reduced in numbers, -- you needed too or something happen

Do you still have low Kidney function? --- yes 17 % next checkup is in February

Might you need a kidney transplant? --- going to do home dialysis in the near future first but hoping I can keep the kidney level stable for a little bit longer, they have to put in a fistula in my arm for the dialysis

have you got much on this week my friend
