What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

@PeppiPatty swearing is ok, as long as it's not directed towards a member in an agressive manner.

Dear Loopy, if what I write rings true for you.
What do you do to get proper empathy and compassion.

this is what I do.

I am really good at Getting support.

Went to a place where they were supposed to give out assistance to help with MI ( people suffering mental illness) and wasn't given any for my darling ex husband.
But the street doctor nurses saw me and ensured that I got and still get support from them.

I looked around in my neighbourhood for one person who I can pour out my troubles to but also
Making sure I keep all times together to a dialogue, not a monologue. Meaning it's about the friendship, not my millions of problems.

this means....when I have a problem, not making it the topic of conversation but like....throw the problem In if the conversation goes that way on it.

for instance: my partner said something aggressive to very good friend of mine yesterday.
I was very shocked but decided not to focus on it until I spoke to D.....D is the friend I chose to. Be my support.

when she came over for coffee, I had the DVD Jersey Boys which we watched and as I was making coffee I said, oh, you saw my boyfriend yesterday didn't you? did you know he said .......

.the person I chose to be my support replied.....well He has now done .......and ....... Now. Just reminding you. how are you going to deal with it?

I said nothing and we didn't bring it up again.
but I'm working out what to do for my poor sweetheart.

Can you see the support she gives me? I think she gives me compassion and not interfering is what she does.

Because life is hard, she has a problem with a lady who was told she was getting support from a refuge. the refuge said something not very nice about my friend so she brought it up we spoke about it and She let it go. sure enough, as agencies do not give any credence to carers/loved ones, six months later, they dumped and let go of my friends friend and my friend was able to handle it because I was aware of how carers are treated by hospitals and agencies.

Phew, this is a lot to take in.

another thing she does is makes sure I don't work too much.
and in return, we always have fun. I listen to her

the person I chose :
A really lovely lady called D who held my hand through my separation
Holding my hand while my gorgeous doggy is going through troubles
separation with latest boyfriend from his own struggles.....
Beginning to work again
Patching up relationship with Mum

In Grow, we say hugs are healing! More hugs for everyone! And if you are like me, and not a big hugger..handshakes, a warm smile, a nod, slowly I am now a hugger too!
Real men do cry @Loopy, and even eat quiche nowadays! The new saying is probably eat quinoa or something like that😃
I think mental health looks like empathy, compassion, kindness, respect, sensitivity and love..
And I think that the more we see of these qualities the less "ill" we are...
Hugs to all of us on the forum😃😀
And my favourite wisdom "each person's recovery or growth aids in the transformation of the world". That is Universal Benefit..and this is what we are doing on this forum, aiding in the transformation of the world!

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

Loopy,

I must also respond to your tired old heart. something that hobbit mentioned in a wonderful message of his and that is you can speak, feel your messages. This is a gift,

Example.
I think I was tumbling along with the history of my marriage and Hobbit said the amazing thing about my story was that it was heart felt.
Loopy, compassion, empathy. where does this all come from?

Example.
I met a wonderful older man consumer just sitting in the hospital that my son was at. As far as I remember he was solely there to be able to share his experience with others in the Psych ward. He could empathise. what a gift. this is what you have here.

the word consumer means someone who has accessed mental health agencies in the past like i
Am very proud to write.

I know that I am off beam with this story, but I can't resist it. A blind man was sitting on some steps with a sign say that he was blind. A young woman walked past, turned around and took the sign and wrote something on it. The blind man queried her and the camera panned in on the sign, It had been changed to say, "What a wonderful day but I can't see it" maybe a little different but that showed that although the lady and blind man did not know each other she still had feeling of compassion for him. i cried.
