What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

Sandy, I have listened to the interview a couple of times and to me it sound like an inner person not the one I see every day.

Sandy, Sybil is a great personallity and is so much like a lot of "those normal people we come across from time to time, I can associate myself with Manwel, scuss the spelling, he is as thick as a brick, totally confused and brow beaten by Basil. All in all the show, to me, is John Cleese, trying to act normally in a whacky world.

Oh......chinese whispers in the forum between misreading. Lol
I thought you and Kato were but Loopys story is so so relevant. I, listening to Paul Simon, Diamonds on the soles of her feet that someone was saying was good and ...there's an anniversary version of Graceland on Soptify and it's really nice to hear.

I love Diamonds on the soles of her feet, nearly as much as Gracelands...
In my attempts to stay current, I also am loving we are done by the Madden Brothers..

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

One of my kids has autism (yes our family is a right old laugh) and I constantly get told that she doesn't look autistic. The classic response is "well you don't look ignorant but there you go" I have never used it for her or for me (but you do so much how can you be bipolar?) But I think they mean well.

I just read the transcript. Loopy I am so sorry. MI is a such a thief.

Hear hear Uggbootdiva on Loopy.

Mi is really such a Thief.
My partner who has worked through so much since being with me........I've had to ask him to leave my home in the the past two months.

He got his dream job three months ago and he has fallen more and more into drinking alcohol and not acting in a safe way around me for me to feel comfortable anymore. Poor guy. I feel so annoyed ...he bought himself a scooter on Saturday and trashed it by 11pm Saturday night. He went to emergency Saturday and was behaving in a way I would have thought that he should have been assessed but instead, he was escorted out of the hospital by security guards.

He's living in the bushes down the street near the beach. not near me but near a section of the beach which is quite nice. My only hope is that he is going back to work tomorrow and maybe they will pick something up.

I don't want to help him because I've got to keep myself safe.
He speaks of suicide and anger.......the one feeling of hope I have is that he sees the Doctor regularly because two or three months ago, I asked him to just visit the GP to have someone to talk to.

Uggbootdiva,,, when I went back to work I went into the office........I was describing how hospitals, Psychiatrists....on the whole ......need to be taught more about listening to the carer/loved ones and accepting that duel diagnosis is a way not to be ignored. The boss, says to me...but women...everyone in the office, it's changing and getting better. I replied.....oh, is it. no, it isn't. I was surprised that such an issue can be covered so easily.

It also feels like. People saying that to you about your daughter....is from fear of autism. not knowing what to say.
Ignorance of something that shouldn't be ignored.
wanting to put a pink bow on a problem and let's all smile a lot.

I must say this is something I can be prone to do.

Just because one can walk to their life blindly and smile, doesn't make it alright. I like your response, can I give you another??

what about.....

I would love someone to show me real compassion and empathy is a tricky situation. not that.

I dunno. this might not be right.

Uggbootdiva, I am so pissed off that the general public still talk in those terms' " you look normal" " he doen't look ......." . When are all these ignorant humans going to believe what they read and stop making sick people even worse by saying those things. I feel so sad about anyone with a sick child, they are our future, but will society give them a chance to reach their full potential. Not whilst they are so ignorant about mental illness. One would expect better because it didn't just happen it has been around for decades, mental ilness. As it is said " there is nothing new under the sun" . Then I ask my self why are there so many ignorant dills in Australia. Can you answer one question for me, who or what is MI, I know i'm thick...........

Stick with it. And by the way I don't mean well, if they did those comments would not come outh of the Hole in their faces. Sorry, bad week, not a happy chappie. Good luck.

Sandy, I know real men don't cry, but you try telling this thing I call a brain. I was totally out of control, I don't think I would have had as many tears if someone had trod on my big toe. I don't know if it was sad or just over whelmed by the stories, I have seen so many like it but it still pushes that button. They are the times when a bloody big hug is called for. I am sure it would be a better world if that happened more often.
