What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

It is in the eye of the beholder.

Sandy and Kato, was interviewed by a Jorno from the ABC on Monday and I thought he was going to ask that question, but instead he asked how many times I had been told, "You don't look like someone with PTSD". I informed him too many time to remember but my stock answer was "what the hell am I supposed to look like and all the replies were, "well I don't really know." Thats when I told them that now they know, just look in my eyes. The interview was a bit tough on me , still haven't come up for air, but I will get there sooner of later. At least these forums are a great help being able to read about other with problems of the mind, no plaster, bandages and no crutches. The gent from the ABC was very understanding and trod very gently. I am a bit long winded today, hope you don't mind.

Sandy, I have the address to read the transcript on ABC radio open, I will scan it and post on the board.. I listened and I thought I sound as if I was spaced out on dope and alcohol, I know the drugs affect my speech but I was unaware of it. Thank you for your words of encouragement I really appreciate it. Maybe those who ask what does it look like will now know what it feels like.

Kind regards

Loopy.

Sandy, transcript of interview By William · · From Speak Your Mind

.

Unfortunately, after a couple of years, I started to change but I could not put my finger on the cause.

I was addicted to the job. I attended every accident I could, went to as many domestic situations as possible and made my aim to attend any occurrence which involved serious injury and death.

In December 1989 when I had returned to my station, whilst walking down the hall towards the lunch room, I just stopped as if I had walked into an invisible wall and just stood there. In the station at the time was our resident doctor, having a smoke and a coffee.

He later told me that when he saw me I was just standing erect with a blank look in my eyes. He informed me that he had turned me around and taken me home. I lived in the station residence at the time some 10 metres away. He undressed me, put me into bed and gave me a sedative.

He returned the next morning and told me that I was unfit to return to work because of PTSD and gave me a certificate to cover me. The doctor arranged an appointment with a Consultant Psychiatrist whom I still see now.

During the years from 1990 'til now, I have attempted to take my life on too many occasions to count, spent not months but years in psychiatric hospitals and used numerous antidepressants to control my feelings. I was given the nickname "Loopy" by a group of Vietnam Vets.

And I use this name with pride.

I have been asked what is my illness like and can I describe it? I just say what I can about it but I do not understand how or why I am the way I am. It is all too hard. I just try to accept it and I don't care what others think or say so long as it is to my face.

As the result of my illness, I lost the job I loved, a spouse of nearly thirty years and any love for myself. In fact, I no longer know what it is to love or hate... which may or may not be a good thing.

Powerful Loopy, and I am going to gently remind you that how we sound us always distorted to ourselves. Maybe you were just taking your time and speaking deliberately slowly. Better to speak slowly and be heard, than to speak rapidly, and no one listens..
Good on you!

Kato, keep up your complements and my head will burst. Thank you sincerely, they do help I can assure you. I am not a pat on the back person, I would much rather I do it for others. It is better to Give than to Receive.
