What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

Kato,
How are you? I just got home from dragging my beautiful little doggy around....and..... I called my sister in law for coffee. I've always been quite intimidated by her because she's so cool...(I'm too feral and always look uncool like...forget to brush my hair or stained teeshirt or wearing overalls in decidedly un overall place.....) but this forum is teaching me to be more confident.......

That is fantastic that you had the confidence to make that call, I am the best way to put it is the Bogan of my family lol
I am sp glad tho that you tool that step to contact her. I hope the conversation went well. I am venturing out tomorrow myself to go see centre link to find put what my options are in that side of things I know in myself I cant work yet.... but l need some income to help pay for meds lol
And hopefully find some more options for me
But big yay for you so proud of the effort you went to to call your sister

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

thanks for that. I must say, she and my brother are very happy together , I'm like, the complete opposite in personality but. My priorities are very different. I've also got a partner, we are also very happy but we are pretty bogan too lol. He likes showing off about his mullet he had when young....
going to Centrelink is such a good thng to do. I even went to Centreli k with my oldest son and just asked them to record I was concerned about him not knowing his options in that he is living with a mi.

I went to see my wonderful doctor last week, I've been surprised at the attention I've been given, now I'm seeing a psychologist etc. Ths mental health plan which Gps are using is good.

My sister in law....oh, I've been meaning to call her for years. I'm still a little proud of myself....
thanks again.

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

hi Kato,

Its a nice feeling that you can make people laugh. Especially family...

My youngest son was speaking to me yesterday. He lives with my Mum, he was very ill for many years but fast forward and he gets support with studies and working. He is very loved by my extended family. He's a jokester too.

Always lively to hear from you, best news when your son is travelling well also!
Your mum must be a pretty special lady, its not every grandma who can live with their grandson!!

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

This one is for Kato..bogan level as in Upper Middle class Bogan? Love that show on ABC 1.
Let's put it this way..if you have ever sat through Keeping Up Appearances with Hyacinth Bucket, pronounced bouquet and has candlelight evening soirées ..and is ashamed of her family a fair bit. Well I am Daisy the TV loving older sister with unkempt hubby On slow..to bogan or not to bogan, this is the question Shakespeare secretly wanted to ask...

Bit secretly I fancy myself as as Sybil from Fawlty Towers, lounging in bed, on phone, eating chocolates..oh I know..shut up Basil!
Straying back to the topic of what mental illness look like, it looks like mental health..I still have same face, its not always possible or desirable to identify another person with MI..hell that is like saying I can tell if you are gay, straight or from Mars..unless being able to empathise with someone else's pain or the flash of recognition of a kindred spirit...that has been very healing for me..but I hope no one has been sticking me into a box I labels diagnosis just from looking at me! Person first, my mental health is just another facet and doesn't identify my self worth or anyone else's!
