What does mental illness look like exactly?

What does mental illness look like exactly?

Yes, this is a rhetorical question. I work within the mental health field and my mental illness is the reason I work where I do; without it I wouldn't have the position. One of the reasons I am where I am is because I am stable enough to lead by example and do what needs to be done yet still have the consumer perspective.

As a new position I've spent much of the last couple of months meeting people and telling them about the position to people who are on the whole welcoming, accepting and have used me (or perhaps utilised me would be a better terminology there) to achieve a result.

Naturally however there are still many who do ask what is my lived experience/my diagnosis and then scoff and say I don't look like I have bipolar or better yet I look too stable. When buying an apple you know you are getting something with similar colour and taste but no one expects any two apples to be identical lol.

My tongue in cheek comment to a colleague when I relayed that latest look of disbelief was that perhaps I should stop my meds for a while and then invite the "disbelievers" along for the ride?

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

Hi sandy,

I am not comfortable being around others and discussing myself. I have looked into a few of the groups you suggested, hopefully soon I will be able to go to one.

I just spoke to psychiatrist receptionist lol I have no idea what I am doing really. I have a referral to see this person I have to get my gp to fax it through for the psychiatrist to then approve seeing me..... oh and they are also booked out for 5 weeks. .... looks like I won't be getting help there anytime soon lol

I don't understand the system at all. If I don't show here over the next few days it will probably be because I have gone to a hospital and been booked in there haha

Anyways I just read back through some of my posts and I read like I have lost the plot so sorry for thr huge chunks of gibberish I have been posting I will attempt to make them more legible in the future.

Everyone here is amazing and your support has been welcomed and appreciated I just hope you all understand/understood what I was trying to convey through the long ramblings

Any questions about the posts that don't make sense feel free to ask I don't get offended, some of them I don't recall writing in the first place. Thank fully they seem to make sense to me lol

Take care all

My love and support and respect to each and everyone of you

Re: You dont what its like until you've got it yourself.

I find trying to explain what it's like very difficult, to try and put it in words that the specific person will understand and be able to empathise, that's hard

Re: What does mental illness look like exactly?

Like your contributions and isnt it me, JT, allexandra1992 who have the mutual admiration club happening?? lol...... Im first in line.

I remember calling a drug and alcohol line about my ex husband and .....she says. oh you've rung here before. I remember you, blah blah blah.

I thought, I have a need here, I have no problem calling myself a consumer, meaning

I have accessed mental health agencies in the past but really !!!

I never called them again.

I get myself in these fixes, its like too much too often. I can hardly move because of the absolute stuff happening around me. I find it even too hard to go for a walk!!

I feel so down easily. I try very hard to keep busy. Do my craftwork and have silver chain in to keep me on track. Ive done huge amounts of study when I was younger but now, thinking about it, I would feel like falling apart.

Kato, later tonight, I am going to reread your articles but this one is full of feeling and care about yourself to us,, your fellow like minded people.

Thats, if you didnt know, is a gift as many people base their lives on 'things,' but you can address others, here in this message with feeling from your soul. Special.

Now Im going to make myself a cup of coffee. A friend is coming over to play scrabble too.

It is an issue isn't it but the more we educate ourselves, we can change the paradigms ( my new word for the week. It means changing inside patterns) of others.

"What does mental illness look like exactly?"

I might be a bit lucky. I'm not a musician, I'm a performer who plays music.

People expect me to be 'mental.'

On stage.

I wouldn't want to walk into the 'wrong pub' without my bodyguard though.

...He's not really my bodyguard, he's my mate.

All jokes aside (if I must - I really like jokes -one of the reasons I need a bodyguard).

I'm starting to realise that I have to use my two gifts to raise awareness.

Did anyone else see and enjoy the Bi-polar Bears series on SBS?.

Everyone is different. This means everyone experiences mental illness differently. This means... Oh look a distraction! *runs away*

I got nothin'.

I know this isn't MI, but this crew are 'outsiders'? too.

I hope anyone who is reading this, and is currently low, will take some cheer.

It sure made me grin.
