Topic Tuesday // Exploring Loneliness // Tues 18 Sep, 7pm AEDT

For this Topic Tuesday, SANE Help Centre Manager @Former-Member, will be facilitating a discussion that looks at loneliness, how it feels, your thoughts and experiences. This is a topic that comes up a lot for members and with the help of the forum we can find connection, but what other strategies can be put in place? Let’s share and brainstorm together in this Topic Tuesday.

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

I imagine that could be even lonelier @Shaz51@BlueBay. Having a husband but feeling all alone.

You’re right @Former-Member ehen you’re nit included in social stuff with friends you feel alone. Snd then when my depression is very bad I want to be left alone. It doesn’t make sense

@Former-Member I am pretty lucky my ex has said I never have to worry because I will never be alone (I agree with @Adge though as alone is different from lonely) but I know things are getting to be a worry when I look forward to talking with the delivery person as social interaction.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Exploring Loneliness // Tues 18 Sep, 7pm AEDT

For me, my sense of loneliness gets worse when I am surrounded by people I feel should see me, hear me and value me. When I show myself this kindness, the loneliness lessens. The expectations I project onto others to fill my needs appears to be the reason I feel loneliness to begin with. Now, partner free, I'm choosing to fill my own cup so to speak.

@utopia I want to be able to share things together but I think we are drifting apart when it comes to communication.

@Former-Member I have 1 best friend. 39 years we've been friends. But we have zero in common except our history.. I crave the company of people who feel passionate like I do about the environment, refugees, politics.

I think that's very accurate as I'm usually surrounded by people by still feel intense loneliness. Like others don't relate

I can relate to that @Bunniekins I look forward to going to the shops, for some social interaction.

When the cashiers don't know me, & don't remember me (not so good)...

I'm so pleased that you've all joined the discussion! You're definitely visible and valued here 🙂

It's quite sad to read how prevalent loneliness now is. Does anyone have any thoughts about why loneliness has increased to such an extent? What's happening within our society?

The quality of the relationship is definitely key. I currently have more support in my recovery than I ever have, and I don't doubt how much these people do care about me or that they really listen to me. Yet I feel lonelier than when I just had one very good close connection with someone else.
