Topic Tuesday // Exploring Loneliness // Tues 18 Sep, 7pm AEDT

For this Topic Tuesday, SANE Help Centre Manager @Former-Member, will be facilitating a discussion that looks at loneliness, how it feels, your thoughts and experiences. This is a topic that comes up a lot for members and with the help of the forum we can find connection, but what other strategies can be put in place? Let’s share and brainstorm together in this Topic Tuesday.

I'm new here - what is Topic Tuesday?

Topic Tuesday runs from 7pm - 9pm AEST monthly. Each month we focus on a different topic, with the session facilitated by a Community Manager or Moderator. Sometimes Topic Tuesday will feature a special guest, who is an expert in the topic.

The first post of the thread (this one) will give you an idea of what the topic is and what will be covered.

How do I get involved?

Topic Tuesday takes place right here! It's text based, so no software is needed. During the session, to keep up with the latest posts hit the 'refresh' button on your browser for the latest posts (it doesn't automatically update). Keep an eye for page numbers at the top & bottom of the page, and jump to the highest page number for the most recent post.

Throughout the session, the facilitator will put questions out for you to answer, usually asking for your own experience on the topic. To contribute to the session, just hit the 'reply' button and share your thoughts. No answers are right or wrong and everyone is welcome to get involved.

If you have any questions about how to use the Forums, check out our Guides.

Invisibility captures it @Deepsea

@Adge I get the same sense from what you said.

Sometimes it seems like it makes no difference whether I'm there or not; anyone could stand in and noone would notice.

"It’s about not feeling seen, heard of valued by the people around you."
That's probably the best definition I've heard to date.

That's a really interesting perspective @Pinky. Can you share how you show yourself that kindness or meet those needs? It sounds like a great skill to have learned.

Social media can't help. I feel like I've had interactions but they are very important to also have in real life.

Hi all, jumping in a bit late, I resonate with Utopia too - feel a lack of belonging to my passions - environment, politics, animals - since I stopped working and spend so much time on my own, I feel disconneted. For me lonliness is more a sense of not belonging anywhere.

I think community has stopped being valued and placed as a key element of daily life @Former-Member. People knew who you were. You knew them. It was nothing out of the ordinary to stop and talk for 15 minutes with someone at the shops.

Now, society seems to be in a rush, (to get somewhere). Valuing people isn't important anymore. It's all about valuing things.

Re: Topic Tuesday // Exploring Loneliness // Tues 18 Sep, 7pm AEDT

That's a complex question @Former-Member

My friends nearly all cut me off, when my marriage ended - at the very time when I needed support & connection the most.

That made it so much harder to work through grief, & to move forward.

I've not been able to make enough new friendships (since then), to re-connect socially (in that sense).

It seems much harder to connect & network with people as I'm older - despite all the techno-internet advances etc.

@utopia I feel the same way about wanting a connection on the things that matter most to you. I also miss having someone to come home to.

@Former-Member I’ve noticed since coming out to my friends and family about my mental illness they don’t come out snd ask hiw I am. Yet if I broke my leg I am positive my friends would rally round snd help me. This is really lonely when you feel no one cares.
